Red Dawn and Empire (Aus) - Opinions please

Hi all

My first post on here, I'm looking for some advice.

I prefer the heavier rock and AOR releases, but occasionally like some of the softer stuff too. My favourite artists are Harlan Cage, White Sister, White Lion, Lion and Blue Murder among others. I have been reading on here about 2 albums that sound like they are up my street, I just wondered what others think of them. They are:

Empire - self titled (the Australian band)

Red Dawn - Never Surrender

I am thinking about buying the CDs, but they are pretty expensive, so I don't want to be too hasty! I haven't heard anything by either band.

Any opinions welcome please!

Cheers

James

Hello James,

welcome to the forum ! :drink: Enjoy the ride while it lasts !

Probably it would have been a good idea to introduce yourself before asking for opinions ...the guys over here are rather touchy (especially Geoff !) and you would probably have received some feedback a lot sooner.

Anyway, I can only speak for the RED DAWN CD. Simple answer: AWESOME AOR release ! Get it NOW ! BUY at all cost !

Geoff, Phaffas (Matt) and Dave are the Aussies over here and they can tell you all about the EMPIRE release.

Cheers

Bernd

Thanks Bernd.

I didn't realise there was a protocol - I've posted a thread on the Introductions forum.

Cheers for the tip!

Haha... there's no protocol for asking questions only after an introduction, is there? I think the only reason there weren't replies yet was because the question was asked on a weekend.

Either way, the Red Dawn CD is pretty good but I think a little over-rated. I actually prefer the Network - 'Crashing Hollywood' CD which is related in some way which slips my mind now.

As for the Empire CD, very good disc. Not sure what sort of price range you're looking at but it's worth checking out for a good price. A couple of fillers, but generally pretty good stuff.

Red Dawn is fine, I also prefer the Network cd(same singer) as well as Heaven's Edge(singer was in Network)

The Red Dawn is brilliant and I will slightly differ in opinion on Geoff and Paul and say I prefer it to the Network album. Both damned fine though, so you can't go wrong with either.

I will also add that if you like White Sister and Red Dawn, then have a punt on the excellent Tour De Force 'World On Fire' if you haven't already heard or got it.

I'm actually surprised more people haven't bothered to check out Empire. I used to put that CD up on ebay all the time a few years back when copies were easy to come by. Never sold for much either. A few songs on that one - namely 'Calling' and the stunning 'Leave this way' - are worth the price alone.

I will slightly differ in opinion on Geoff, which is usually the case.

Wish I'd been looking for it then, it seems to be very expensive now. Never mind, both CDs will be going on my birthday list for next year.

Jez - cheers for the tip, I've been listening to Tour de Force on Youtube and will be bidding for the CD soon.

Listened some Network, the vocals (on the heavier parts) remind me a bit of Keel. Not bad, yet another band to check out!

Red Dawn is a pure classic AOR imho ! Larry Baud is an awesome singer. If you have to choose between those two bands, go for Red Dawn without any hesitation as Bernd said. Except for the singer, it's difficult to compair Red Dawn and Network, different style, even if both are melodic.

Red Dawn is very "keyboard oriented"...

Ive only got their second album... every time i find the debut its water damaged or screwed. The second one isnt essential.. but a few nice Mr Big esque tracks. As for their eps... AVOID.

Yeah, the 2nd one is pretty average. It has that one awesome song - 'Feel' - and the rest is only pretty average.

I think the Red Dawn CD might be just a little too keyboard-heavy for me. Sounds like Empire will be more my taste, shame there are no samples on Youtube to listen to. I can get the CD for £15, which is quite expensive by today's prices. Needs more thought I reckon.

I get the impression you'd probably agree with those of us who prefer the Network CD to the Red Dawn CD. Not quite as many swirling keys all over the place on that one - more emphasis on good, commercial melodic rock songs.

    • New single 'I've Got A Feelin'' out this Friday. From Mighty Music: While the world was twisted and spinning oddly like a broken carousel in the last couple of years, Swedish funk-infused rock’n’roll bastard child ELECTRIC BOYS were busy touring, penning their following record, and trying to figure out how to make sense of all this mess we’re living in.  They took the Scandinavian Winter to retreat to warmer climates and booked a studio in Spain, where they spent a few weeks recording what will be their next studio album. But the first teaser is already here, and it lives up to Electric Boys’ high standards. “I’ve Got A Feeling” is pure rock soul, with a classy riff, a mellow chorus, and that storytelling, baritone, charming voice of Conny Bloom to top it all. All in all, the best way to foreshow the Swedes upcoming studio album and to leave you the feelin’ that they’re up to something really good. Again. Despite the world is still twisted and spinning oddly like a broken carousel. ”Yes, I DO have a feelin’…” Conny Bloom says. “That something good is about to happen. New paths will be crossed and new doors will be opened, so let’s party like it’s 2023!”.

    • New song 'Devils Highway'. From Frontiers: Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to present the second installment of the Melodic Rock/AOR project Cry Of Dawn featuring Göran Edman on lead vocals. The self-titled debut album, released in 2016, was a welcome return for Edman and the new album, "Anthropocene" sees the talented singer sounding positively inspired.  For "Anthropocene", Edman partnered with producer/songwriter/guitarist Tommy Denander to craft a superb, classic sounding AOR album that harkens back to the glory days of the genre. Edman's enthusiasm for this style of music shines through in his vocals and the passion translates clearly through all the performances.  In 2016, Cry Of Dawn released a straight ahead AOR/Melodic Rock self-titled debut album which highlighted Edman's amazing vocal abilities on a superb set of songs. The result was a true feast for the ears of all lovers of the classic AOR genre. Now, with the follow-up "Anthropocene", Edman once again showcases his amazing vocal talents and demonstrates why he is so well-suited for the style.  Over the years, Göran Edman has been a stand out vocalist in numerous genres including neo-classical metal, progressive rock, and AOR, just to name a few. His vocal stylings can be found on records by John Norum, Yngwie Malmsteen, Brazen Abbot, and Glory, among others. Tracklisting: 1. Devils Highway 2. Memory Lane 3. Before You Grow Old 4. • New song 'Something In The Water'. From Frontiers: Long-running Swedish melodic hard rockers House Of Shakira have announced the upcoming release of their new studio album "XIT" on April 21, 2023. This new album follows the band's last studio album (and ninth overall), “Radiocarbon” in 2019 and the 25th Anniversary reissue of the band's debut album "Lint" in March 2022. "XIT" once again showcases why House Of Shakira have been one of the most consistently unique bands in the melodic hard rock genre over the course of their multi-decade career. House Of Shakira is known for having a distinct sound that stands out amongst other bands in the genre. They create melodic rock of the highest quality by mixing hard rock with several other musical styles. The vocals soar, the melodies rise, and the guitars bring it all back together. All these components make listening to the band's music a sensational experience. Because of the diversity of the music, House Of Shakira does not fall under your typical hard rock banner and in a world of musical clones, this is indeed a breath of fresh air. House Of Shakira are one of the most consistent and enjoyable melodic hard rock bands out there, as proved through their body of work over the decades. Originally called The Station, House Of Shakira is a Swedish melodic hard rock band originally formed in Stockholm in 1991. After deciding to change their name at the behest of a Swedish record label, "The Record Station", who thought the band's name was too close to their own, their new moniker came about in an interesting way. A German magazine that had reviewed their demo and noticed the band had no name ran a contest to have their readers pick the band's name. Geoff Noddings, a reader from England, entered the contest and suggested the name "House Of Shakira". In 1991, newspapers in England had written about a boutique store in London called "The House of Shakira." Using the sale of clothes in the boutique as a cover, the store actually offered and sold a very different commodity, as it was in fact a bordello. The band loved the name and thought then, and still today, that the name is a nice metaphor for something that is not what it seems to be. That certainly fits in with their music not being what one would normally expect of 'melodic rock'. Tracklisting:1. Something In The Water2. No Silver Lining3. Toxic Train4. Your Exit5. Too Much Love6. The Messenger7. Twisted Attitude8. Nowhere Bound9. Chimera10. Hell Or Heaven11. Xit   Line-Up:Andreas Novak – VocalsMats Hallstensson – Guitars, VocalsAnders Lundström – GuitarsPer Schelander – Bass, VocalsMartin Larsson - Drums
