Any metal in London and Manchester?

Hi there. I'm new to this board and just found this cool section.

I will head for London and Manchester in the good ol' UK this fall. Anyone got some addresses of cd and record shops where I can get classic 80s metal or NWOBHM???

My last visit to London is about 20 years ago and I'll remember myself searching a very small part of the Camden fleamarket. But the most heavy record I found was a Cheech and Chong soundtrack (would be rather "stoner" rock now, wouldn't it?).

Thanks for any hint.

I think we have plenty of English lads that will be able to help you out here

There is a road in the west end that has a few record/cd shops that I have picked up a few bits n pieces in.

Its called Berwick St, and it runs parallel with Carnaby St.

Aint been there in ages, so cant vouch for how good it is now.

Sadly, Beanos in Croydon was one of the biggest record shops in Europe, but it closed down a few years ago.

Its happened to a lot of decent record shops though.

Most of the places I ever used to visit are gone now.

This site might be worth a read though:

Beanos was great. There used to be a rock music shop down the road from there as well 'Rockitt Records'

Reckless Records was another great source up in London, but the name has changed as has the pickings.

There was actually a 3rd in Croydon as well, just between the two already mentioned, Buy or die...but thats gone too!

I get to London several times a year to do a bit of music shopping. Each year that passes there is less and less sadly. Notting Hill Record & Tape Exchange is your best bet. The Record & Tape exchange at Soho rarely has anything decent and I think the Camden one is as bad. Cheapo's has shut in Soho, I've been told that the stock was bought by another shop a little further up (the name of which escapes me) they have just opened (a few months) but there wasn't much there a couple of weeks ago when I was last in.

It's always worth a trawl around Camden market. Stalls come and go, but there are sometimes some gems to be had.

Manchester isn't too bad. You can get to about five shops within ten minutes of each other from near Picadilly. Personally I find them all a bit overpriced - the vinyl in particular is ridiculous!

In Manchester there's a good shop called Vinyl Exchange on Oldham Street...which is probably the best. It has 2nd hand and new CD's and you can pick up a few bargains. It has a classic rock section and a Metal section .... plus a general rock section. It may take a few hours to look through it all.

Plus it has vinyl downstairs.

There is also one on a side street quite near Piccadilly station that seems to have a lot of Live bootleg CD's too.

There's also a place nearby called Afflecks Palace which is a collection of different shops - some are here one day and gone the next but last time I was in there I came across a couple of small CD stalls with a few good n cheap CD's!

But same as everywhere a lot of the really good shops for our kind of music have disappeared.

It might have been Empire Exchange? I think? I didn't go in there but passed it often enough - I think it's still around somewhere just re-located. Next time I'm in the centre I'll have a look around (sadly it's not often I bother going in now though).

Also there was "The Emporium" but I think that's shut now.

@nick

Thanks for the help. I'll have to stick quite a few little red dots on my city map now :headbanger:

Just remembered, try and get to X Records in Bolton - it's not too far. Although I haven't been for a while, they always had great stuff in stock.

Yeah but it can be a bit pricey.

  • 3 weeks later...

London: -

There are Record Exchanges in Nottinghill Gate, Berwick St & Camden - these sell all formats of music and great for bargains (highly recommended)

There is a specialist Oxfam Music outlet in Ealing Broadway - in which I have picked up some intersting FF AOR before

Croydon has 1O1 Records - hit n' miss for AOR/Metal etc / Beanos was still open on one level the last time I was over there in July '09 but I fear it has gone now from what I understand?

Most have gone. You can travel out to the 'burbs like Reading, Billericay (don't think I have spelt that right) for the odd shop but often or not it is not worth it.

Most have either disappeared completely or gone online.

Check me out online: http://www.freewebs.com/aor4sale/index.htm

    • Haha, thanks mate. I'm pretty fond of that one too.  I think I've said it a few times in this thread, but I don't think AI is a threat to "real" music whatsoever. Sorry, I know I'm repeating myself, but I could see a world where it has a significant impact on dance music and music that is already, for lack of a better term, created artificially anyway.  And I am amazed by, and love what it can do with rock/metal music, but it's still got nothing on what a group of four or five like-minded individuals can come up with, or most notably, a song-writer with a great voice. Or even a good voice.  I have some deeper cuts in my newer material and I am happy enough with the results but it still sounds like AI emotive, absolutely no comparison at all to a real dude pouring his heart out with his own delivery and melodic structure, straight from a songwriter's brain. And as cool as the music is, you listen to a heap of AI and then you put on just one or two top-end favourite bands and you're all like, oh, yeah, AI definitely can't do that. All the intricacies like guitar and drum fills, vocal hooks and melodies... if anything AI music has given me more appreciation for great artists. On the flip-side, it makes me view poorer artists in a dimmer light, lol, but it makes me really appreciate the real craftsmen and women a lot more.  lol, speaking of rants.  Ah, I've had this pickle a few times before. I like the chorus better in V1, but the verses better in V2. Usually in this case the chorus (V1) would win out for me.  And hey, thanks for posting these, lol. I was playing them and looked to the side of my screen and noticed I had 50 credits!! Bonus. I wouldn't have checked otherwise. So I guess even if you run out, you still get the standard daily 50 credits that even free users get. Gotta admit, that's a bit of a relief as 14 more days of nothing was going to be tough. And at last 50 keeps me well limited too. I might not even get one keeper song with 50 credits the way I've been going recently.

    • Ooh, thanks for the reminder. I should give the full thing a listen.
    • Goodbye Windows - Corrosion of Conformity
    • Fear Is the Mindkiller - Fear Factory
    • I’m really liking this release. More guitar on it than I expected!
    • Might be worth looking into
