After over 15 years of hard work and a series of quality albums, Steve Newman has established himself as a highly respected name among the Melodic Rock / AOR fans. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since his self-titled debut back in 1997, so with the album long out of print he and his band NEWMAN have taken advantage of the advances in studio technology since them to re-record the album.

So, here we are today, 2014, and NEWMAN has re-recorded their first album, offering the chance to fans not only to complete the Newman collection, but to listen to these songs in a new shape, mastered with new technology, and added bonus tracks that were written at the time of the original sessions.

The material from the first album is more straight ahead in style than Neman's more recent adventurous releases. Broadly the songs fall into two categories; classic, bouncy British AOR in the mould of FM or Shy, such as on the opener "If It’s Love" which is still a live favourite to this day, "Let Your Heart Rule Your Head" and the keyboard driven "That Kind Of Girl"

The other style, which will probably appeal more to present-day Newman fans, is in a series of rocking, moodier, more atmospheric pieces, notably the lush ballad "Say You Believe", "Faith" whose spacious feel shows off his deep vocal style perfectly, and the great "Tears Are Not Enough" which closed the original album. I like both styles in this new refreshed, energetic yet melodic versions.

For added value the original 10 tracks on the album are accompanied by 4 bonus tracks penned at the same period but never recorded and previously unreleased. All these are really good tunes, mixing the smooth AOR melodies of mid-tempo "Crush On You" (love the keyboards), with cool riffs as heard on the bluesy rocker "Backdoor Man". "Love By Design" adds a slightly funkier feel to the rocking riff, while the elegant AOR ballad "Stand Up" reminds you of masters Strangeways.

"Newman ST 2014" is Classic British AOR / Melodic Rock made with style, next to Strangeways, FM & Airrace, now re-recorded with a very good production and offering 4 good previously unreleased tracks.

This is a Limited Edition, CD only release (500 copies), so hurry up, there's few still available at AOR Heaven Records.

EASILY RECOMMENDED.

This has been about the album I've wanted to hear most this year which I've not been able to get my ears on. I'm so keen I almost forked out the small fortune to buy direct from his site. Maybe one day...

AOR Heaven needs a serious website redesign; it's terrible. Anyway, while does this album have two price points?

On AOR Heaven? There's usually one price for locals with tax on it, and one for international customers without tax. At least that's how I remember it. We're the "cheaper" one, without tax.

Speaking of AOR Heaven, I bought the last Amaze Me CD for about eu$2.60 as well as Farraday for dirt cheap, and Sapphire Eyes was a good price also. And there was one more I forget...

Can anyone comment on the re recordings on this? Is there much improvement in quality? This is the only Newman album I don't own as it became a little hard to find at a normal price.

I can't remember the ins and outs of the original too well to be honest ,as I only ever had a CDR... but the new version is very well produced in typical recent Newman style. And for the record, one of the bonus tracks 'Crush on you' is one of my favourite Newman songs.

Great I'll have to put this on the want list.

It completely slaughters the original in every way shape and form, plus the extra tracks too. A definite must have in my opinion

    • Originally recorded for, but not included on "Reckless"... ...the song has since been included on the 30th anniversary reissue of the album.
    • "Monster"     "Killer Katharina"   "Party Rock Anthem"   "Hard Times"
    • I'd put them in the same bracket as Ghost. Complete rip off, although the album is good.
    • Tokyo Blade to release a new album in January 2025. It’s titled Time is the Fire with the release date slotted for 17th January via Dissonance Productions. Tokyo Blade go all the way back to 1982 and were in the thick of the then emerging New Wave of British Heavy Metal with their self-titled debut album appearing in 1983 quickly followed in 1984 by the classic Night of the Blade. That album gained much momentum for the band however after that it seemed as though the law of diminishing returns applied with the success of Night of the Blade not being capitalised on. Despite many line-up changes over the years allied with periods of inactivity and reformations, the band has continued and over recent years released four albums since 2018, the last of which was Fury in 2022. And now we have Time is the Fire to look forward to in January 2025 which will comprise of fourteen new songs. Time is the Fire is available for pre-order from Cherry Red with all sorts of different formats available including CD and coloured double vinyl. If you fancy pre-ordering: https://www.cherryred.co.uk First single "Don't Bleed Over Me" out now...
    • Still going too... https://hunterband.de/
    • Haha, thanks mate. I'm pretty fond of that one too.  I think I've said it a few times in this thread, but I don't think AI is a threat to "real" music whatsoever. Sorry, I know I'm repeating myself, but I could see a world where it has a significant impact on dance music and music that is already, for lack of a better term, created artificially anyway.  And I am amazed by, and love what it can do with rock/metal music, but it's still got nothing on what a group of four or five like-minded individuals can come up with, or most notably, a song-writer with a great voice. Or even a good voice.  I have some deeper cuts in my newer material and I am happy enough with the results but it still sounds like AI emotive, absolutely no comparison at all to a real dude pouring his heart out with his own delivery and melodic structure, straight from a songwriter's brain. And as cool as the music is, you listen to a heap of AI and then you put on just one or two top-end favourite bands and you're all like, oh, yeah, AI definitely can't do that. All the intricacies like guitar and drum fills, vocal hooks and melodies... if anything AI music has given me more appreciation for great artists. On the flip-side, it makes me view poorer artists in a dimmer light, lol, but it makes me really appreciate the real craftsmen and women a lot more.  lol, speaking of rants.  Ah, I've had this pickle a few times before. I like the chorus better in V1, but the verses better in V2. Usually in this case the chorus (V1) would win out for me.  And hey, thanks for posting these, lol. I was playing them and looked to the side of my screen and noticed I had 50 credits!! Bonus. I wouldn't have checked otherwise. So I guess even if you run out, you still get the standard daily 50 credits that even free users get. Gotta admit, that's a bit of a relief as 14 more days of nothing was going to be tough. And at last 50 keeps me well limited too. I might not even get one keeper song with 50 credits the way I've been going recently.
    • Darkstone - Heart Of Steel (2024)   Well, here's two versions of song number 9.   https://suno.com/song/4e549a3d-d7e6-4e8c-a022-ae96830014b3   https://suno.com/song/331b2d37-cb0f-4006-8d93-c8bb69e4df8a
