  1. V.good, underrated disc IMO. the new album is excellent too :-)) Really? Oh yeah ... from one of my favourite sites (seaoftranquility.org): Put quite simply Shy is the melodic rock highlight of the year so far and when you consider the standard of what has come before in 2011, I don't make that assertion lightly. Holy shit...I had no idea they had a new CD out...how did I miss this... Not out just yet......it is pretty awesome tho :-))
  2. Can confirm that Adler is involved on at least 2 tracks - still not sure how many are actually new songs, but at least 4 have been knocking around for a while. It terms of style, this is exactly as per the debut. Nice! Love the debut! I shelled out some $$ for the Jap version so I hope I'm not disappointed. You wont be...I love pretty much every track on it.
  3. OK, reality check time in terms of what Nightrain recently wrote (warning : I usually dont post in this thread as my first spin impression is usually wildly wrong, but here goes) - Grand Illusion - Prince Of Paupers Ive never warmed to Grand Illusion - as NT said most of their releases are riddled with filler and having seen them live they cant cut it in that arena either :-( This new album is a difficult one. On paper I should love it, untempo melodic (almost pomp)rock with big harmonies and choruses.....but for some reason this just isnt happening for me?? I think my problem mainly lies with the vocalist....when singing softly his vocals are heavily accented (which bother me) and singing loudly it sounds (too often) like he's screaming, which is really annoying after a while. Also some of the lyrical content is too sticky sweet for my tastes..like 'believe in miracles' for example. What I will say is that the musicianship is second to none, esp the guitar solos...and where they do get it 'right' the results are pretty awesome - like on 'Through This War' and 'Gone'...unfortunately I just cant see myself spinning this very often. White Widdow - Serenade I think most people have heard at least half this album on you tube, so we all know what to expect. This is very good....big 80s styled anthems. My question is this - how is this that much different to the debut? Everyone ive seen who has reviewed this has said it is miles better than the debut?? OK, the production is miles better - bigger, boldly, more harmonies - not surprising given who produced it, but the songs?? Pretty much on a par for me, with maybe the exception of one or two obvious stand out killer tunes like 'Cry Wolf' (very debut Heavens Edge) and 'How Far I Run'. Pretty essential purchase though. Vain - Enough Rope The jury is still out on whether these songs are new or old songs pre debut or in alliance with Adler. Its pretty much being packaged as a new album and on first/second listen this is on a par with the debut in terms of song style. Bags of attitude, great rocking tunes, excellent guitar solos and a couple of pretty cool ballads. Theyve also thrown in a couple of old classics like 'Cindy', which sound amazing. Basically for any fan of Vain this is essential listening. In a year devoid of the 'newer' big guns like HS, Crashdiet and Crazy Lixx this is about as good as its going to get sleaze/glam wise.
  4. V.good, underrated disc IMO. the new album is excellent too :-))

  6. Gutted about Farcry. Would love to see W.E.T play so that's pretty exciting. My thoughts on Warrant are; 1. they should've quit before they made that bandwagon-jumping garbage that is "Ultraphobic", and 2. if they were going to assault our eardrums and continue then they shouldn't even be called Warrant anymore. Pete - you still travelling over? yes he's still coming over and news is that Newman will play one Farcry song and Pete will guest for that song - pretty cool. You intending to go tim? And anyone else of course.....Jez?? Ive had my tickets for a while now :-))
  7. More evidence that these are older songs?? Im starting to wonder if any of them are 'new' ?? Having said that. this song IS extremely cool.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFpXIk1tlew
  8. Vain - Enough Rope White Widdow - Serenade [2 very good albums for very different reasons!]
  9. That's what Im told, we'll see....................

    Daughtry

That's because all the best tracks were bonus tracks and better than any of the songs on the album lol !!
  11. I now have the promo for the new album and can confirm that 'Cindy' is on the single disc. All sounds great and very much in the vein of 'No Respect' and 'All Those Strangers'. Just one question tho is 'Worship You' a new song? There's you tube vids of this going back some 18 months? Cheers
  12. Big news of the weekend is that Warrant and Farcry have pulled out of Firefest. They have been replaced with WET and Newman My feelings on this are mixed....... 1. Absolutely stoked about seeing WET and would prefer them 100 times over Warrant....esp as Warrant is not the original line up. 2. Gutted that Farcry have pulled out.....but at least Pete is still coming......to watch & drink beer - cool!! Cheers
  13. New Strangeways album should be finished and on sale at Firefest :-))
  14. Daughtry - Renegade [prepare for a killer modern rock album]
  15. Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn Of Events Threshold - Dead Reckoning
  16. If its all like this I will be a VERY happy man.............roll on Nov 21st............about time we had some KILLER modern rock in 2011. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IWvQBREbeI
  17. Ive been going on about these guys for ages.....hopefully this should be a killer release, cant wait!

    New Mecca CD

although my Dad quite liked it... at least someone in your family has a good musical taste ! The first Mecca album is decent AOR, but can hardly be called a 'classic'. Ive seen comments labelling this new album as 'thinking man's aor'....that worries me slightly....usually means zero hooks and over long songs...we'll see.
  19. Wow, some pretty sweeping statements in this thread, I guess from me too. For the record, I like a LOT of progressive music....I own discographies of quite a few progressive bands, including most of DT's stuff. All I was saying is that on the first couple of spins this hadnt grabbed me in the way that some of their previous stuff had.....I do think that most of their releases are patchy with moments of greatness sitting next to tuneless 'wank' and duff tracks. I will of course give this many more spins and will post some more detailed thoughts in a few days.
  20. Why is 4:27 "near the end"? Why can't it be 1 minute into the next song, like most bands. I actually like the first single but I still can never see myself sitting through a full album... If the vocal punch happened in the first minute, you'd have another Toby Hitchcock song. Sometimes subtleness and power can mesh together. They should've asked you to do the press release... Backed. To compare this song to the Toby Hitchcock disc has left me somewhat scratching my head! I mean this is a pleasant non-offensive ballad, but that's about it. As for the 'synth' solo, Im sorry but it sounds like a computer game to me.............. Let me put it this way - One Day Ill Stop Loving you >>>> country mile >>>> Beneath The Surface Toby Hitchcock >>>> country mile >>>> James Labrie
  21. Marillion - Fugazi Silent Rage - Dont Touch Me There Reckless Love - s/t Nightranger - Growin Up
  22. Awesome track! The chorus is BIG à la Def Leppard. Backed - very good track....in fact ive liked all three that ive heard. I'm finding all of these a little disappointing. Is it just me? Yes
  23. Yeah maybe, but the songs just sounded really dull to me and some of the instrumental parts were ludicrous even by DT's standards. Just found myself chuckling at times........like at the beginning of 'Lost Not Forgotten' - I mean WTF. How is that enjoyable. Not for me Im afraid. Have you heard thew whole thing from start to finish? yep. I mean it was OK...a few nice tracks, but DT have never been my favourite band.
