30 SECONDS TO MARS - This Is War

Surprised no-one else seems to be into this band, but this disc is my top pick of 2009 and is just killer IMO. I know Leto gets a whole lot of bad press, but having seen them live I can definitely report that he has the perfect voice for this stuff. I know it's all a bit over-produced/polished, and there are too many of those chanty-choruses on here, but check out a couple of the new tunes. This is way more melodic/epic-sounding than their first two discs - which were both just pure Modern Rock. Below is a link to "Closer To The Edge" which is awesome & almost like a synth-pop song. Also check out "This Is War", "Hurricane", "Alibi", "Kings & Queens" - epic stuff...

Epic sound with over the top arms and eyes to the heavens type songs, yet they sound too much like U2 mixed with the epic anthem side of Creed. I can hear why you love it, but I don't know if I'd want to listen to an album full of 5 minute plus songs in this style.

I just had a listen to 'Closer to the Edge' - pretty good song. I don't mind this band at all. I'll definately take your advice and give the whole album a go soon.

I like this band very much. I love the song"Kings And Queens". I also dig their older stuff yet I haven't heard the whole new CD yet. :headbanger:

Got Jo this for christmas as she really likes them. It's not bad in places and 'Kings And Queens' is a good song (very U2'ish). The rest is ok, but as TIM says, way to overdone on the crowd vocals which are all over the place. It wouldn't even get a sniff at my top 20 though.

  • 2 weeks later...

Can't remember if I dropped my thoughts on this in the 'first spins' thread before I left, but I was really surprised by this. The band hasn't really ever done much for me before and I'm not totally sold on this either. But, there is something very appealing about it.

On the negative side, it's a little self-indulgent, a little pompous and overdrawn... BUT, the songs do generally seem to be of a very high quality. Good lyrics and melodies... definitely one I will need to explore further.

    • Eclipse played that same game when Apocalypse Blues came out.  They dropped that song as just a single and made no mention of an album at that point as far as I remember.  All they were doing was selling the 7 inch vinyl.  We know now though that they clearly knew a full album was coming as Erik said they basically were working on both albums at the same time and deciding which tracks would go on each album.  Granted, maybe they didn't know the full timing of album #2 at that point but they certainly knew one was coming. Maybe the same here.  Maybe will trickle out a few songs and then announce an album later this year or early next year when it's closer to release.
    • So, Danny posted how the song is doing on Spotify and someone asked if this means a new album soon. Danny just made vague replies and said "well there will be more stuff coming soon"
    • Funnily enough, I read that this afternoon when I went to add the album to my collection on the main page. I got the European version which has two bonus tracks ... if you don't have them, you really aint missing anything

    • Created and Posted this video recently in order to promote Ryder SRIII a little more.  I love this song, one of my personal favs from the record.   Be careful viewing at work though (NSFW), just for a couple of images in the video.
    • Named my HH self after the song Auslander on the album Stain. Love that track. Really like the whole album. It's like Living Colour's "Slave to the Grind" or "Dog Eat Dog".

Brothers Johnny and Donnie Van Zant (respectively current lead vocalist of Southern Rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd and founding member of .38 Special) were able to find room in their busy schedules for the first time in 1998, recording their collaboration album “Brother to Brother”: a tribute to their late brother and Lynyrd Skynyrd original singer and founding member Ronnie. Such release was highly acclaimed between the press and fans worldwide and brought the duo to record a follow up album, simply entitled “II” in 2001. Their collaboration during the years did not stop as they tapped their feet in a more Country-oriented style with the release of “Get Right With the Man” (certified Gold in the USA in 2005) and later on with “My Kind of Country” in 2007. Now the brothers once again reinvent themselves, offering a Christian-themed album encompassing their Rock and Blues musical roots (and with a touch of Country for good measure). The result “Always Look Up” is made up of songs that will touch the listener’s heart and soul, with an emotional depth that is truly second to none in today’s musical landscape. Experience the soul touching that only the music from the Van Zant family, can provide. You will see why they are icons of the American South, and musical heroes to millions around the globe!
