EDDIE VAN HALEN TO AUCTION A PAIR OF 1956 CHEVY CLASSICS AT BARRETT-JACKSON SCOTTSDALE

LOS ANGELES -- January 5, 2009

A pair of Chevrolet classics from the personal collection of rock ‘n’ roll icon Eddie Van Halen will be sold at No Reserve during the 38th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., Jan. 11-18, 2009. The 1956 Chevy 210 (Lot #1259) and 1956 Chevy Nomad (Lot #1259.1) will each be auctioned with matching, one-of-a-kind EVH Brand “Wolfgang” guitars and a pair of red, white, and black EVH striped sneakers. Hailed as “The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions™,” the Scottsdale auction and lifestyle event will feature a diverse mix of the world’s most desirable collector vehicles. SPEED will broadcast nearly 40 hours of live, high-definition coverage of all six auction days.

“Rock ‘n’ roll and collector cars go hand in hand,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “And Eddie’s cars, although from the same year, represent the diversity of the collector car hobby. The Nomad is restored to original specifications while the 210 is a custom built street rod with modern performance gear. I expect these cars to enter special collections that salute both rock ‘n’ roll and automobiles.”

The maroon 1956 Chevrolet 210 is a Pro Street hot rod built by customizer Jim Van Gordon. The car features a powerful 454 c.i.d. big block Chevy engine that pumps out more than 600 horsepower, making it suitable for the drag strip while still street legal. Additional highlights include a narrowed 9-inch Ford rear end with Detroit Locker, Mark Williams axles, 4.30 gears, 4-link coil-over suspension, disc brakes, and custom wheels and tires. Racing gauges and a dark grey color scheme underline the interior of the 210."

Van Halen’s 1956 Chevrolet Nomad station wagon sports a classic “Cashmere Blue” and white paint scheme and was once part of the famed “The Harrah Collection” in Reno, Nev. The car underwent a frame-off restoration and features a 265 c.i.d., 210 horsepower “Power Pack” V8 engine, power steering and power brakes. An upgrade to disc brakes was added for improved stopping and safer driving."

"Out of all the cars I have owned over the years, I hung onto the ‘56 Sedan and Nomad because I was closely involved in restoring and building them, so they are very special to me," explained Van Halen. "I almost hate to let them go, but I don’t have the time to drive them. It kills me to see them sit there when someone else could be driving them and have the pleasure and joy of owning these beautiful classic cars.”

"Since they are so dear to me, I thought I would make it even more special by having two custom made Wolfgang guitars built to match each car,” Van Halen added. “I hope the new owners enjoy these cars as much as I have and keep the guitars and cars in their families for a long time, because they are all one-of-a-kind.”

In 2007, Eddie, president of ELVH INC, partnered with Fender Musical Instrument Corporation to launch EVH Brand guitars, amps and musical products. A limited run of Van Halen FrankensteinTM replica guitars were introduced in addition to the EVH 5150III TM amplifier line and EVH guitar accessories. In January, Eddie will launch an all new Wolfgang guitar. More information on the EVH Brand is available at www.evhgear.com.

The Van Halen cars and guitars will be joined by the world’s most desirable collector vehicles and automobilia to be sold at the historic Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction. Lifestyle attractions will also return to Barrett-Jackson in January in the form of luxury vendors, galas and fashion shows. Barrett-Jackson’s trendy night-spot, “The Garage,” will be the site of exclusive gatherings throughout the event.

Man isn't he dead already?

Old has been.

Release another album or do SOMETHING or else get out of the limelight.

Well then.... what a ray of fucking sunshine you are...

EVH pisses me off.

His ego messed up a good band and lost him two singers.

All I ever hear in the news about him is that he has cancer or is dying or he's having another spat with a singer.

Release another album or I'm not interested in anything he does anymore.

I spent years following his moves and hanging onto his every word.

Sorry if that sounded a bit morbid!

    • It's so much better to listen to the original, Erik has done some great covers, but this is a miss imo.
    • This made my recommended list for last year. Far removed sound/style wise from the awesome debut album and only one of the original lineup is featured,  but very very good all the same.
    • This was released last year and pretty good it is.   From Andy Rethmeier's Youtube channel: A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away ... well not quite that far away, Hartlepool in County Durham to be precise, a band of rare quality was formed. That band was called White Spirit and after their debut single, "Backs To The Grind" was released on the legendary Neat Records in 1980, the major labels came knocking. They were eager to snap up a band that had far more to offer than the majority of NWOBHM bands that they were lazily bracketed with. MCA Records won the race to sign White Spirit and with a line-up of Phil Brady, Graeme Crallan, Janick Gers, Malcolm Pearson and Bruce Ruff, their self-titled debut album was released later in 1980 to great acclaim. A constant schedule of touring saw the band build up a large and loyal following, but changes in personnel saw Janick Gers join Ian Gillan, to be replaced by Mick Tucker. Toby Sadler took over bass duties from Phil Brady and Bruce Ruff made way for an unknown singer, called Brian Howe. The new and improved White Spirit entered the studio to work on their second album with then Gillan keysman Colin Towns at the production helm. Alas, the album was never completed, the band broke up and musicians went their separate ways. Mick Tucker joined Tank, later followed by Graeme Crallan. Sadler slid easily into Airrace. Mal Pearson stepped away from music for a spell before returning to action with legends The Sweet. Singer Brian Howe crossed the Atlantic and became frontman for Ted Nugent, before achieving mega platinum success as the replacement for Paul Rodgers in Bad Company. So White Spirit were seemingly consigned to music history, with former members proceeding to forge impressive careers built on this promising foundation.  Four decades on and the location of these 2nd album sessions remained a mystery. Presumed to have been consigned to a skip, as was the fate of so many priceless mastertapes carelessly discarded over the years. The day following Brian Howe’s tragic death from a heart attack in May 2020, Tucker and Pearson were on the phone reflecting on those heady White Spirit days. The missing tapes were once more discussed, but still neither had any idea where to find them. Fate stepped in, and whilst preparing to relocate to France, Mal Pearson was rifling through his furniture in storage when he found a dusty old bedside cabinet. Inside were four sets of tapes. One labelled Chiswick Studios – White Spirit. This was it. The one they’d all thought was lost for ever. The tape was handed over to Conquest Music boss and Tank guitarist Cliff Evans. He arranged for the delicate and risky process of baking the tapes to preserve and retrieve the old recordings and transfer them to digital. Successful as the process was, the sound quality of some elements of the tracks were just not good enough for today’s ears, so Tucker & Pearson decided to replace all of the musical accompaniment with a stellar line-up of players. Neil Murray (Whitesnake) and Russell Gilbrook (Uriah Heep) made up the rhythm section, with the guitars and keyboards replaced by Mick and Mal.   Tracklisting: 1. Right Or Wrong (lead vocals – Jeff Scott Soto) 2 .Runaway (lead vocals – Brian Howe) 3. The Dice Rolls On (lead vocals – Lee Small) 4. Lady Of The Night (lead vocals – Brian Howe) 5. Gotta Get Out (lead vocals – Brian Howe) 6. Better Watch Out (lead vocals – Jeff Scott Soto) 7. Don't Say No (lead vocals – Lee Small) 8. Wait A Little Longer (lead vocals – Brian Howe) 9. Holy Water (lead vocals – Steve Overland) 10. Rock And Roll (Is Good For You) (lead vocals – Brian Howe)
