Saosin

Okay, one more band I want to mention today. Anyone here familiar with Saosin? They released an EP a few years ago (2003) and I thought it was okay but not great. The vocalist was, but the songs were a bit of a jumble. In 2006 they released their s/t debut full length album with a new vocalist and it kind of blew me away. These guys are amazingly melodic, though I'm not going to recommend them to people without trying first. As I said, I personally love them and think this s/t album is excellent... anyone else familiar with them?

No, American, I believe. Why do you ask? Is saosin a Portugese word? What does it mean? Google, here I come.

Interestingly enough....I JUST bought their album about a month ago. Mainly because I listened to some clips on their myspace page because they are playing a small 'modern rock' festival that I am going to in about a month called 'Buzzfest' here in Houston.

I like 'em....but I think I had to get used to the vocalist if I can remember correctly. Too 'samey' or had some strange tonal thing that I had to get used to......but good tunes though!

I actually quite like the guy's voice. Admittedly, the vocalist on the 'Translating the name' EP had a much better voice - really good voice, in fact, but he's no longer with the band. And it sounds like it may be for the better, based on the "new" songs. :)

Hey Tim and Glen, you two ever check these guys out? I was just listening to this last night. I'd have to list it as one of if not the most heavily melodic album I've heard in recent years. The vocal harmonies are just f*cking insane and there are SO many truly excellent songs on this one. Surprised there weren't more takers on this one...

Yeah I did hear this album at the time - wasnt there some really heavy stuff?

Remember liking it, think I may have a cdr somewhere - will have to dig out.

Nah, not really that heavy. Not any heavier than the rest of the stuff we listen to anyway. Maybe their debut EP with the other singer? But the album you need is the s/t album with a new vocalist and melodic-as-f*ck songs.

Yep I love this band, and "Youre Not Alone" is one of the best ever Modern Rock songs IMHO. A massive chorus hook & lush melodies. They're very melodic (strange they're touring with Underoath, who are much heavier), and I have the album somewhere - which is a little patchy but well worth getting. Do they have a new album?

Nah, they have a new EP they released this year. Doesn't look like any of the songs are on their myspace page. But I think there were literally only two new songs and three live ones or something. As much as I adore this band, still haven't got around to getting it. I think they have a new album planned for early 2009 release.

Well, the new album 'In search of solid ground' was released on 8th of September. Just spun it and here are a few thoughts:

Sometimes a band just releases a CD and you're all like, 'Wow... this is great." And somewhere internally you acknowledge the fact that the CD is so good that it will unlikely ever be topped by the band. Well, I have to admit Saosin are one of those bands for me. As Tim says, the s/t debut is not perfect and without flaw, but it is a damn great CD with some truly memorable gems of modern rock. That album, to me, is just explosive. So melodic it stretches your ears at times... brilliant in places.

So in all honesty, this new album kind of sits exactly where I expected it to. It is very good. It follows on from where the last CD left off. But plain and simply, it's just not nearly as good. I can actually see this being a good grower as all the songs are strong and there is no shit here. They're a better band than that. Who knows? In time when these songs stick it might even compete with the debut, but I don't think it will. It's just not quite as explosive, as melodic, as HUGE in it's delivery. It's very good, whereas the debut was excellent.

Early picks - 'The Alarming Sound of a Still Small Voice', 'What were we made for' and the beautiful and melodic 'Nothing Is What It Seems (Without You)'.

This should easily fit in my top 10 somewhere, I dare say.
