I remember when The Quireboys first appeared in the metal media. They, along with Thunder, were lauded as the great hopes for British metal/rock. Thunder were great, the debut album rocked, whereas I hated Quireboys. They got plenty of airplay back then, much to my bemusement. Fortunately, a friend used to tape Headbangers' Ball for me every week (as we didn't have MTV) so I could fast forward through that stuff.

Then a few years later The Wildhearts appeared to similar hype. I hated them just as much.

Earth Vs The Wildhearts is a classic mate.. sad.gif

I know it was popular, it just didn't do anything for me. There were a few British rock albums around that time that seemed to be highly-rated, but I couldn't stand. We've already mentioned Quireboys and Wildhearts, another one was Skin. In fact, the latter really turned me off and their self-titled release was the last album I bought before a 5-year hiatus from rock and metal (and therefore was at least partly responsible). I guess even though I am British and as patriotic as the next man, I just preferred the American stuff.

Oh hell yes my man! Another nail on the head. Many years ago I got Skin's wrist slashingly bad 2nd album first and I despised it. I saw they had released their debut a few years earlier and for some braindead reason I gave them the benefit of the doubt and tried that one too. Sure enough it was just as bad as the 2nd CD.

Jeez mate, you've done well. Three of the worst, most boring bands I have heard in my life. Keeping it British, has anyone mentioned Tattoed Love Boys yet? Or Rock City Angels? All of them so bad I want to beat my head just thinking of them.

Tattooed Love Boys WERE awful (their lead singer now runs a hair salon not far from where I live) ... Rock City Angels are/were Yanks, mate :)

I LOVE the first Wildhearts album ... nothing they've done since comes close ... I've seen Thunder, but never gave their albums much of a chance (how foolish I was), but Skin were hugely over-rated!

  2. Second Hand Store finds:

Bauhaus: Press The Eject And Give Me The Tape

    Within Temptation: Mother Earth

Within Temptation: The Heart Of Everything

    Direct from the band:

A Formal Horse: A Formal Horse EP

A Formal Horse: Morning Jigsaw EP

(Female-fronted prog ... a bit Big Big Train-ish, with some early IQ/Pendragon touches)

  3. Yeah, I don't know enough about the game, but the impression I got here in Australia was that the Aussies were far from any kind of force in the international game, at the moment. I feel like every time I hear an international result, they are losing comfortably, unless it is against one of the lightweights. I can't remember the Aussies beating New Zealand at any time for about the last 20 years or so.

I'd have thought England and Australia would be a pretty even match up, with the home advantage going to England? But I'm probably out of the loop, I guess.

My Mum is Welsh, my dad is English, so I've got a foot in both camps ...

I think England will go into the game with a point to prove after the lambasting they've had since the weekend (mind you, if the call to kick to the corner had worked as well as it did for Japan, everyone would be falling over themselves to sing Robshaw and Lancaster's praises!) If England tighten up on the discipline, it could be too close to call.

I don't think Wales can keep going for too much longer with their injury list growing ever longer by the minute. If they lose anyone else to injury on Thursday, their final game against Australia could prove to be academic!

  4. Yeah, hate the game but I like world cups of stuff. I'm pretty annoyed that there's no real free-to-air coverage here in Australia (aside from a couple of 1:30am and 4:30am matches) and it's all on pay-TV. Very annoying.

But yeah, seemed like a crazy result. Georgia beat Tonga too, hey?

Yup - most of the results have been fairly predictable (with the exception of England v Wales at the weekend), but there have been some fantastic games so far, with the 'smaller' teams showing a lot of skill and determination :)

  5. I don't enjoy festivities/spectacles which promote nationalism. ;)

Then you should watch rugby ... I've never seen any trouble at a rugby match - the fans all sit together (and generally drink together afterwards.) During the recent RSA v Namibia game, the 'boks fans were on their feet cheering as Namibia went over for a try (shame it was disallowed) ...

  6. Yeah, yeah - I KNOW there are very few rugby fans here, but I just had to post something about Japan's stunning victory over South Africa at the weekend ... with the winning try coming in the very last play of the game.

RSA have won the World Cup twice, and were ranked 2nd in the world at the start of the tournament ... Japan have never progressed beyond the Pool stages, and were ranked about 14th in the world ... it was a thing of beauty, seeing the faces of the 'Boks players and supporters as the final whistle went :)

  7. Poor grammar. Does this really piss you off? Do you silently weep for death of the English language daily as you read your Facebook newsfeed? What the HELL do they teach in school these days? The your/you're, there/their/they're, to/too/two, and where/ware/we're misuses? :soapbox:

It drives me up the wall ...

THEY'RE over THERE with THEIR parents (or something similar) ... it's not f**king rocket science!!

    Jeez!!

*and breathe ... and breathe ... and breathe*

  8. Anyone else looking forward to the soon to be released Mad Max movie....

It's a pity that the advertising posters went with calling Hardy's character 'Mad Max', instead of simply 'Max' (or even, God forbid, 'Max Rockatansky') ... it's a small thing, I know, but it irritated me ...

  9.

    A 'southpaw' is a left-handed boxer :)

    Yeeah I got that.

For me it was kinda lame before I turned the movie on, and it was a bit too much "Rocky"

What then confused me was that there seemed to be only one very small reference to southpaw in the movie, and it seemed irrelevant to the movie, let alone being the name of the movie...

It's probably all they were left with ... every article I've ever read about the film just bangs on about how Jake Gyllenhaal had to bulk up for the role ...

*SPOILER ALERT* ... a quick look on Wikipedia suggests that the film takes its title from the punch thrown at the end ... so now we know ...
