Slash Concert 1 Feb 2019

Slash was in town last night with Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators.

THE GOOD
Fair size venue.
Myles said he was worried about his voice as he'd had a bug, but he actually sung very well.
A lot like the records.
Todd Kearns - this guy was 'on'. Engaged the crowd and looked like he was having an absolute blast.
Brent Fitz held down the drums well as you'd expect.
Went for over 2 hours
No covers played (except Slash and GNR)

THE BAD
Slash has never been an animated person on stage. The most he ever really does is bounce backwards from time to time. But last night it looked like a job for him. No shit, he did not cross the half way mark of the stage once. Stayed on the RHS all night. Pretty poor given half your audience are on the other side. I was on the floor middle so not a huge deal for me at the show.
The other guitarist, Frank, looked like he was a ring-in on his first night. His soul looked empty.
Myles didn't really engage the crowd much. No real connection, just the odd 'how you doing tonight Melbourne!' type stuff.
Missing songs - No More Heroes & The Great Pretender, but these are just my personal omissions.
Only one GNR song. I get it, we were there to see the Slash show, but people were pissed, constantly asking for Rocket queen and Get In The Ring etc
Given how little GNR have been to Aus, I was surprised that shortfall wasn't addressed with some more songs thrown in. May also have changed the tempo of the night a bit. The most energetic the crowd got were when Todd Kearns sung a couple of Slash songs, and when they did Starlight. But personally I didn't mind too much.
My wife got us tickets for this, and they were $130, which was far too much for the show that they put on. Just a backdrop banner, basic lighting etc, it bordered on more of a pub band experience.

In the end the show overall was ok.

This made me laugh. Very harsh, but funny. Poor Frank.

Might hit up the Dee Snider gig tonight.

Have tix for Corabi and getting my Pop Evil tix today.
I've seen Corabi before and he was pretty good, can't wait for Pop Evil, that will be AWESOME.

We'll be in Sydney when Red Hot Chilli Peppers are here, which kinda sucks.
Faster Pussycat also touring but not a real fan of them. 4 or 5 great songs, and one of them is a cover.

I think I always ask everyone who mentions stuff like this, but where do you find out about all this? I had no idea any of these humans were around. Would love to keep in the loop somehow but never know how.

And being out of town when Red Hot Chilli Peppers kinda suck because you can't go to the show and slit all their throats? You can't try to run their bus off the road? You can't go to the gig and vomit in their faces?

On the positive, you don't have to be in the same state as them when they spit their venom at the crowd. That's not bad is it?

Why's it a bad thing to be out of town when the worst band on the planet are in town? ;)

lol, I don't mind them. My wife is a big fan, and I drag her to Slash and Corabi etc, si pay back.
Sure beats Cat Power, who I had to endure.

I subscribe to ticketmaster.
They send emails every so often, better yet is Lastix who offer remaining tickets at 30 -50% off which is handy if you are in two minds as to whether to go to a show.
Bands In Town is a fair app who let you know when bands who play the same type of music that you follow are coming out, but I don't use it much any more.

Probably the best resource is Facebook. That's where I was notified about Dee Snider & Pop Evil. Also people tag you to let you know when bands are coming out, and if you follow Pages like the Hard Rock Show that will also post tours etc.
But I unfollowed them after they reviewed Michael Sweet - Touched and ripped into it (which is OK) but also made fun of him and his then dying wife (which was not ok)

Here are some pics from the concert for those interested.

I have a new phone with an awesome camera, but I haven't had time to play with it properly yet so focus is a bit off.

Cool, thanks. I downloaded that Band In Town app - looks kind of interesting. Just got to remember to check on it.

I'm also subscribed to Lastix but can't remember the last time I ever saw a rock/metal show in that email. Maybe Bon Jovi was on sale for $18,000 down from $36,000 per ticket?

Awesome pics from a phone. I took a bunch today too but doubt I got anything good - will sift through them one day soon...

Yeah I got to the concert and I only had my phone for a couple of weeks.

Supposed to have the best phone camera around. It actually has 4 cameras for different types of photos.
Just before the concert started I realised that I hadn't explored how to set it up for concert shots (to reduce spotlight, better focus etc)

Re Lastix, I got a notification for Slash for $59 tickets.

The Bands In Town app is pretty good.
I set it to email notifications. As I have a business interstate that I remotely manage, I am always checking emails, so I always saw them when they came through.

As easy as selecting Maiden, Metallica, Firehouse, Night Ranger, Motley Crue and Poison as favorite bands and you'll get notifications of all bands a lot like them, as well as Chilli Peppers, Nickleback etc. Anything remotely linked to rock music.

    • I wonder what control they have over the releases? That have promoted the BMG individual releases. The 2009 reissues were by original label, EMI. And this boxset seems weird being issued by Cherry Red. And I have not seen the bands social media promote it at all. I wonder if the reason the BMG ones were lacking in the bonus tracks from the previous reissue was EMI holding onto the rights, but have now allowed Cherry Red to release them. I know EMI used to be the distributer for Cherry Red, so they may be more forthcoming with the material.
    • Yep, cracking indie release of which there are so many but this one is actually really good.
    • I have been a Band Maid fan since their early days (2015) as I really don't mind foreign vocals as long as the music is great, but I always kinda avoided Babymetal as I saw a video of them once and really wasn't impressed with the kiddy vocals, so never gave them another chance. Fast forward to now and on the back of the collab with Electric Callboy I have decided to give them a go. I thought they had a huge discography as they have like 25 albums, but on closer inspection it is only four studio albums and 21 live albums. As I am not a fan of live albums anyway, I decided to buy the four studio albums as they are all quite cheap. Have to say there music is a mixed bag, but overall really enjoying a lot of it. Not sure if I just picked the wrong song to start with, or if it is just that I have adapted more due to getting into a lot of weird and wonderful foreign bands over the last few years, but I am glad I finally gave them a proper go. Have to say, if this song was sung in English I think they would have a lot of fans on here
    • Babymetal - Metal resistance Babymetal - The other one
    • Enjoyed their last cd "Human Nature" remind me of a mellower Black Stone Cherry, similar to Little Caesar.
    • BlackRain - Hot Rock Time Machine Lee Aaron - Bodyrock
    • Now theres a blast from the past  I'm lucky enough to possess
    • Another i'm still awaiting the arrival of...same day release/delivery my arse Amazon  Still this is sounding like their best release thus far...they are gaining and getting better...although I did enjoy the last few albums also...but the sound/production from this one is excellent.
    • Still awaiting mine to arrive...should've been on Weds  or according to my order that was the case anyway
