Pillar - 'Confessions'

I have to admit I was not expecting this, though they were due for a new one. But an advance of Pillar's new disc has just dropped into my ears and although I am only 4 tracks (3 songs plus the intro) in this is sounding extremely promising. Is it too early to call it their best yet? Maybe, but 'Whatever it takes' and 'Secrets and regrets' are probably the best songs I've ever heard from these guys and rank very high in modern rock stakes this year.

Anyway, look out modern rock fans, we may have a contender for album of the year here. Maybe. It does sound very good. Ballsier than the excellent last disc.

'Confessions' is due in stores on September 22, so get your purses ready.

Yeah mate, I was going to check that out - sounded quite nice, albeit maybe not as hooky as Skillet.

Cheers

Still haven't heard Skillet yet. :( This Pillar one is great, though. You'll love it. Tracks 8 and 9 which are a Collective Soul cover and then a Copper cover (yep, off last year's disc) kind of kills momentum a little, but they recover well with the last song which is a monster. The ballad 'Better off now' is quite special too. The disc reminds me a little of a follow-up to Disciple's 'Scars Remain'.

Yeah I was thinking i could hear Disciple in it. Sounds pretty good so far.

Mate, you need to hear the Skillet though....that album is f excellent. Every single song has a monster hook.

You wait til you hear the ballad 'Lucy'...the last half of that song is killer.

I liked 'Secets and Regrets'. The other track I heard was 'Fire On The Inside' which I didn't care for so much. Those were the only two new ones I saw on myspace. So, one hit and one miss so far. I'll have to hear some more tracks to see whether I'll buy this one or not. Too early to tell.

Yeah mate, to be honest I'm not sure why they used 'Fire on the inside' as the opening track because I agree. Aside from the 2 covers it is the weakest song on the album. But don't let that be of any concern to you... the others are excellent. Quick rundown after 3 spins in a row:

1. "Intro"

2. "Fire on the Inside" ; As Chris says, pretty average opener. Not bad though but not one of the album highlights.

3. "Whatever It Takes" ; Killer modern melodic heavy rock. Great tune.

4. "Secrets and Regrets" ; Possibly my fave off the album. Delicious chorus, great hook.

5. "Better Off Now" ; The best ballad of the disc. A big Disciple vibe. Excellent.

6. "Not Without a Fight" ; Killer hard rocker with another big hook. Another fave.

7. "Will You Be There" ; Another ballad, but another great one. Not as good or big as the first one, but good.

8. "Shine" (Collective Soul cover) ; To be honest I don't mind the original of this song, but I don't overly like it. And this is pretty much identical to the original. Very strange choice and I'd have preferred an original 10 times over.

9. "Call to Action" (Copper cover) ; A great song, but I guess it's Coppers and having been released only last year by a great band, again I'd have preferred an original. Again, sounds a lot like the original. Great track though.

10. "Lose It All" ; one last ballad and probably the weakest of the three, but still a good song. I like it.

11. "You Are Not the End" ; Great hard rocking closer. Another of the album's highlights.

So there you go. 11 tracks featuring an intro and 2 covers making it 8 new songs. But I do like them all (some more than others) and would call this the best I've heard from these guys, and I loved 'For the love of the game'. Very good disc.

It's one of my immediate plans to be honest. :)

Having listened to this, the only songs I really like are 'Secrets and Regrets' (really like this one and reminds a little of HS), and the ballad 'Better Off Now'.

The rest I could take or leave , including 'Whatever It Takes' which was pretty good but far too repetitive for my liking.........

Pretty good album, but one which I doubt i'll listen to again truth be told

Dudes, what's the story? Is anyone else listening to this disc? I was under the impression 'For the love of the game' had built these guys a rather strong fanbase in the melodic rock world. I love that disc too, but I think this one is even better. So where are the fans of this one at??? At this point I'd be calling this most over-looked album of 2009 so far.

My feelings are unchanged im afraid. Skillet lays waste to this album. Period.

I think on my last list I rated Skillet higher too, but there are some absolute killer tracks on this one, especially at the start of the CD. I love it.

Just re-listened to this again this morning. The first half is definitely better and as previously mentioned 'Secrets and Regrets' is a killer and really reminds me of HS (say Overload/hope era). Some definite filler, but not bad overall.

Yeah... love the first half. In my opinion, there really isn't any filler on here. The two covers in a row are disappointing, but as stand-alone songs both are actually pretty decent. And those ballads are the weaker tracks no doubt, but imo still good songs. Yeah, still loving this disc and extremely alarmed by the lack of any kind of attention for it.

No matter how many times I check this band out, each and every time it does nothing for me. They are talented, sure but like Chevelle, just can't get into them.

    • New video for 'I Can't Wait' coming later this week.
    • Ah, the old record label make a quick buck off bands they dropped years ago sets where they are just bare bones albums with no bonus material. I thought maybe I missed box sets with bonus stuff. But once again, still reasonably priced.

    • Dredging this up again, as you can now find this set new for about $50-60 shipped on eBay. I just finally bought it to get the 5.1 channel blu-ray version of the album. $179 for the set? No fucking way. But $50? Ehh, ok. more reasonable IMO.
