I'm disappointed. Can't tell for sure but it looks like Sam is going to sell the "Tinted" cd's for Terry until Terry makes them available elsewhere. I replied to the e-mail and refrained from Sam bashing out of respect for Terry. I told him that myself and many others would gladly purchase the cd if it is ever silver pressed and sold from someone other than Sam. I also went on to tell him thank you for all the great music he creates and that all three studio albums are real gems.

I apologize to Sam & his friends for speculating about Terry not knowing of this. At least Sam is being upfront on this one. That's the way the cookie crumbles.......

  2. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.......It is unfortunate situation, and i have tried to make things clear.........Let me lay it out like this.........Everyone is harping on the 2 copies i have..........Which that is cool.......But am i going to open a brand new copy i paid over $50 for just to give him the Obi.........NO, and none of you would either, you would take the route in which i have, find an obi by itself, which is what i have been trying to do........

But now take my point of view for an instance, someone comes to you and says "i want an obi or i am going to make a post about you"......that is so grade school, do this or i am going to tell on you.........If i had not made any attempt at all to correct the incident i would say fine, but i have have went above and beyond trying to find a simple obi strip...........People can say i am coming off as a jerk or whatever they want......It goes back to "it's not what you say, but how you say it".......Jarred brought all this to this public board, and granted he did not mention me by name, that is not the point, I am a stand up guy and i am going to defend myself...........I never said i was right or wrong, just giving my side.....and as far as a giving a cd, they way it came off to me and especially after it has been brought to light here, it was more like extortion......

I will admit i was out of line with the "cdr" comment and for that i will apologize for...........As we speak i just received and email about an obi which will be mailed to Jarred tomorrow from Japan......This is the end of this..............

I don't expect anything from you Lonnie. There was nothing grade school about what I did. I never intended to use your name. I just wanted opinions about a situation hoping you would read them and do the right thing. YOU choose to bring your name into this. I want nothing from you. Lets just move on.

Not to mention you all the sudden get an e-mail for an obi. You just now happen to find one after five months? Please..............

No offense JL, but I can definitely see Lonnie's point about grade school actions, because I think your last comment was grade-school-ish. You've admitted, and many of us know, that Lonnie is a stand-up guy and been a great seller/trader. So, now he finds your coveted OBI, and you're going to mock him for it? There's a reason why CDs with the OBI strip cost more, and that's because they're harder to find. So, be a man, and give Lonnie the benefit of the doubt, take your OBI strip and move on.

This all just sounds like a misunderstanding, and I feel it was totally unappropriate to even bring the subject up here.

Thanks, I'll sleep better tonight knowing that......... <_<

If you don't want people's opinions, then don't post your questions. <_<

I don't have a problem with you posting your opinion, but don't post your opinion if you don't want to see my reaction. <_<

  6. I can see both sides of this, but end up siding with Mullethead.  He bought the cd & thought he was getting the OBI...if he has in fact been waiting 5 months for you to come up with a replacement, that's excessive.  Sounds like he got fed up with waiting for the OBI & suggested a common cd in it's place as a show of good faith on your part.  And for you to say that you now have 2 sealed copies complete with the OBI's, but since this has been aired on HH he ain't getting a copy...that's just makes you come off as a jerk.  Your name was never mentioned in his post, so it's not like he came here to bad mouth you & hurt your business.  Do the right thing & exchange the cd for him.  Just my 2 cents.

Thank you and you are correct.........

  7. Ok seeing how i am the topic of conversation, I am going to defend myself.........1st off I never set out to intentionally cause a situation where i was tryin to sell something i did not have, as some posts would leave you to believe.

I did sell Jarred a copy of Lion-Dangerous Attraction, and heading and picture did say it had the obi, but the description did not say it had the obi. When Jarred contacted me i told him i would get him an OBI in good faith, which i totally intended to do, I have contacted all kinds of Japanese contacts in order to follow through with what i said. And yes i did get another copy that had the obi and i did sell it on ebay......Jarred did ask me about it and i refrained, for a reason i see he failed to disclose, the catalog number did not match the number on the copy he bought.......I again assured him i would get him an obi........Apparently he thinks i can snap my fingers and make one appear........

Then i get an email from him stating that if i can't get the obi, he wants a cd instead.....I'm sorry but to me it came across as "I want a cd for this obi".....Well it didn't set well with me, then i get them message today, If i don't come up with an OBI he is going to post on HH About me, so i in turn told him to "go ahead and post away"...........I guess he thought "making a threat to post about me" was going to get this taken care......As a matter a fact i have 2 new sealed copies of Lion coming in and i would have gladly gave him a new copy for the copy i sold him, but before i could offer, he decided to what he felt he had too, so i told him i was done with the whole situation.........

As far as there being a glitch in ebay, there was and it was within "turbo Lister", if you don't believe that contact ebay, they will tell you all about it and it was even on their Community Board.........

In closing, as i said i did not intentionally rip off anyone or do anything to defraud anyone, alot of people here at HH know me from buying/trading/selling......But if Jarred really wants to bring this to light, he is blaming Sam for selling CDr's and not having the rights to the music, well Jarred how about when you were doing it, remember the Vain cdr's and the AlleyCat Scratch cdr's......Looks like the pot calling the kettle black to me.........

That is all i have to say............

    Later

    Lon

Well, I did make an attempt to keep this from getting nasty but it looks like with bringing up selling cd-rs and all, (which is an attempt to get off the subject) it won't be avoided.

First off, unless every original version (9 trax) is indivisually numbered, the obi you had would have been fine. Your true feeling is that you did nothing wrong and don't want to take care of the customer. Lon, you bid on every Lion cd on Ebay so I would like to think you could find an OBI within 5 months time.

Secondly, I did not say give me a cd for the obi instead. I said if it would be easier I would take a cd, nothing rare, just something I need to fill my collection. I demanded nothing which is how you make it sound.

Third, I did not threaten you. In fact I have all of our e-mails if others need to see them. I think five months of patience is a lot more than others would wait. I will not deny that I am sick of waiting. This has not been taken care of in a timely manner. Even you would have to admit that.

Fourthly, If you all the sudden came up with two copies (even though it's hard to find one in five months time) why am I just now finding this out? Interesting....

Last, I never said anything bad about you in the post. I want to avoid that as much as possible. I believe it was a misunderstanding in the beginning. I too have had a ton of great transactions with you Lonnie. I would have always bought from you. You have always done right by me. That's why I trusted you with this. I didn't even leave negative feedback. Now you want to bring things up that have nothing to do with the situation just so you can throw mud? I admit I sold 4-5 cd-rs on Ebay. I had one copy of each and they were cd's I bought off Ebay before. That is irrelevent. Would I do it again? No I would not. I learned that it's not worth my rep on HH. Comparing me to Sam? Last time I checked I was not making 100 copies of everything and claiming they were re-released.

If you want to be an ass, that's fine. I won't be involved in a mud slinging session. I wish you the best of luck with your future transactions but unfortunately I won't be buying anything else from you.

  8. Here's a message I sent to T-Bone asking his opinion. I am leaving T-Bones response off because I am not at liberty to voice his opinion for him out of respect for him. Please read below...........

    Hey T-Bone,

I won't use the name of the person yet because I am giving him a little bit longer to make good but I want to run something by you.

I won a Lion - Dangerous Attraction cd about five months ago. The pic listed in the auction showed an obi. It also did not list in the auction that the obi was missing. I bid on it because it had the obi. When I received the cd, there was no obi. I contacted the person and they said they accidentally used the wrong pic for the auction. No problem, except I would not have bought it without the obi. Since he or she frequents HH I decided to give the person some time to find one with no rush. Months go by and nothing. I check Ebay one day to see what the person is s elling and guess what? There I see a Lion cd w/ the pic of the obi and also listed on the description, obi. I send him a message asking him why he won't just give me that one. He declined and refused to do so. I wait another month and still no word. So I offer to accept a cd or no real value, just somehting I need to fill my collection to make up for the obi and call it even. He refused that also.

What is your take on this? I don't feel like they did me right. I just wanted what I bid on. I think you will be surprised at who the seller is.

    Comments?

    Thanks

    JL

I have decided to leave this persons name off here because all in all he has always been a good seller and, I thought friend. Now I have had an opinion change about that person and that is too bad. I have always been a fast payer and always had good luck with this person. This is out of character for him/her.

I would just like opinions from others so that it may persuade this person to do the right thing. Or maybe persuade me to let it go and realize I'm the dick. Feel free to be honest.

    Thanks

    JL

PS - I do not want to throw mud please.

  9. Way is Sam so bad at dealing with people and seems to get very upset and aggressive??  He jumps straight on the back foot as soon as you ask him any questions.  It seems like he had got something to hide??

How can a owner of a record label handle himself in such an un-professionally manner and expect to run a viable business.

Maybe anger management could help him out??

  10. Well..

I can say that I'm pretty sure Terry knows all about it. On more than one occasion I've seen Sam on stage playing keys for Terry. Once with XYZ and once with an All-Star Band with members from Badfinger, Rod Steward, King Cobra, among others. Wether or not people here believe it or not, Sam does have many connections. I would bet my whole CD collection that Terry is very aware of this release.

    See above message...........

Everytime someone here trades CDRs they are in most cases doing the same thing they blame Sam for.

That's not even close to the same thing and you know it. Dan, I said the same thing in my e-mail. I told Terry that if it is true, good luck and sorry for bothering you with it. Why would Sam get to release this stuff when XYZ could get some sort of record deal themselves or release it themselves? -_- I'm not buying it........just like Sam's cheapass bootlegs.

    JL

    See above message...........

  12. I sent the following email to XYZ:

    Good afternoon,

I run HeavyHarmonies.Com, a site devoted to 80s hard rock. One of the "hot

topics" on our message board is the legitimacy of CD releases coming from

Retrospect Records, owned by Sam McCaslin.

The following press release has been issued by the label:

"Hello!!  In response to the unauthorized bootleg released by Bobby Feiffer

(original guitarist for XYZ) , RETROSPECT RECORDS and XYZ officially

announce the new release by XYZ titled "Forbidden Demos - 1985-1990".  This

release features 18 previously unreleased tracks and rare demos from the

greatest decade ever!!  XYZ is EXCLUSIVELY represented by Retrospect

Records and we are excited to finally get these songs out to the world ,

the way they were meant to be heard.  Look for the new XYZ album Sept. 13 -

ONLY available from Retrospect!!  ROCK ON!  Thanks for your support!  Sam

    McCaslin CEO-President Retrospect Records"

Is this release fully endorsed by the band? If so, are you aware that your

"reissues" will only be sold on Ebay by Mr. McCaslin, and not made

available through legitimate online vendors (NEH Records, AOR Heaven,

etc.). His practice thus far has been to make CD-R copies rather than

pressed discs, and sell them for $30-100 one at a time on Ebay, saying they

are "Limited edition of 100 copies" rather than flat-rate ($14-18) like

other labels do. I'm sure that makes Mr. McCaslin plenty of money at those

prices, but the availability to fans is severely curtailed at those price

    points.

If you are fully aware of all of these aspects, and this is what you are

comfortable with, more power to you, and the best of luck on your release.

However, if the above is NOT the case, please let me know.

    Thank you for your time,

    -Dan Harding

    Owner, Heavy Harmonies

While I did not receive any response from the band, I did receive the following from Sam:

HAHA - the owner of Heavy Hypocrites emails MY good friend Terry asking

whether the XYZ cd is legitimate!!!

HAHAH - YOU FUCKING MORON - Not only have I been Terry's friend for over 2

years but I have been musically active with the band for the same amount of

time....and you email Terry asking if I'm legit???

HEY DICKHEAD - Stick to your bullshit homo site and leave the REAL work to

the people who matter.  You and your ass bandit buddies will never get your

hands on MY OFFICIAL releases - SO FUCK OFF.  There's a new sheriff in town  ,

    and he's kicking YOUR ass.

I see that Sam's the same personable, professional guy as ever... I'd be proud to have him representing my band.

    -Dan

Dan--I sent an e-mail also and got this response back..........

    --- i m dealng with it

    as we speak

    Take care ,

Looks like dickhead is truly a low life, if there was ever any doubt.

  15. Probably because when he use to post is was like reading a 12 year old's book of curse words.............

    JL

I have to be honest, I miss some of those three-page posts filled with more four-letter words than a 70's Steve Martin skit.

I was on the edge of my seat with every "refresh" hoping someone had responded. Good times... damn good times! :headbanger:

    :agree:

I'm with ya on that, now THAT was entertainment.

In all seriousness (well okay, as serious as I ever get), I'd have to say that IMHO which means pretty much nothing <_< as long as Sam has gotten the okay from the bands, it's his business and he can run it however he wants. I agree that it would be nice to have silver CD's at a reasonable price, but if he wants to up his profit margins that's really up to him. Looks like people are buying the stuff so I guess the public has spoken from what I can see. I don't think you could really call it unethical unless the bands really don't know what's happening but that doesn't appear to be the case. Isn't this kinda what capitalism/free markets are all about. That being said, ain't no way I'm putting out $50 for a green cd-r, but it's obviously meeting a need somewhere or it wouldn't sell at all. It's not like he's doing it to make this stuff available to everyone who wants it out of the goodness of his heart and for all that is right in the world (although his website does kinda give you that impression... ;) ), he's doing it to make money. It is what it is IMHO.

    Well said :)

  16. If you dont agree with what this label is doing, then simply do not support it. I dont know much about it, but after reading on here I did look into it.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder when it comes to reissues. Some are good, and some are bad. Guess it just depends on your own tastes, and what you want as a fan and collector.

As far as asking costs go, as with any biz its up to the powers that be of that biz to decide what their product is worth.  Then, its up to the buying public to decide if that is fair market value for the goods the biz offers. Ultimately the biz will do well, or fall hard.

Sam takes a lot of heat on these boards, and I am not here to support or cut him down. There are many many sellers out there who ask very high prices for whatever they are selling. There are lots of old thrash albums I need to replace an aging list of LPs. But, they are going for big bucks. Bucks Im not willing to pay, as where others are. My loss, their gain, but its still my choice to buy or not to buy.

Take a quick peek at Gemm and Musicstack. The places are flooded with high priced items, so its not just Sam doing this practice. I say let it die and let Retrospect do their thing and it not be rehashed over and over on these boards.

Besides, there are some damn cool people on here I would much rather chat about music than this other suff..

Re-issues are fine as long as they are silver pressed and the band is aware. If the band is aware then that's great. But why would I pay that much for a green tinted cd-r?

  17. JLPRocks... for someone who is trying to give the "whole picture", you're failing miserably as usual.

I have never taken random potshots at Sam... quite the opposite. On any given day, I open my inbox to see Sam responding quite negatively and defensively about something that I have posted on HH. In true Sam fashion, his logic is sketchy and his obscenities fit nicely into my trash folder. And childish ignorance is always an integral part of any Vegas verbal rampage.

He likes to not only take random shots at me, but PJ as well, often in the space of a single, rambling paragraph. Now you want to talk about sputtering unprovoked attacks for no reason... ask your loverboy Sammy about his cheap shots at everything from PJ's car to his CD prices.

And this is in an email sent to me!!

JLP- maybe you should get to know this slimebag friend of yours first before defending his actions and character. You, like the RIAA, the musicians on the CDs he "reissues", and the rest of the world in general, only knows a fraction of what Sam's up to. Sam's reputation for dishonesty has obviously seeped into your relationship with him as this latest allegation that I have time in my busy schedule to send him random shots of antagonism is absolutely ludicrous.

I have better things to do... and better company to keep.

But....you have time to post his emails in public forums. Now why is that, Koogs??

I know Sam's reputation....and I know how 'truthful'..or 'untruthful' he can be. I've known him for close to 10 years now. I'm not defending his character and I know he is no 'angel'.....

My point of my post....and it still stands, is that you continually posting negative things about Retrospect affects, not only Sam....but the bands themselves. And I thought that you were against that?

If you cared about the bands, then you would leave your 'personal' battles with Sam......as personal. That makes a bit of sense....now doesn't it???

Posting emails, etc. in a public forum where the individual in question cannot even respond to those postings is where on your list of things to do in your busy schedule??? What prompts you to do that??? What agenda...or reason would you have for doing so in a public forum??

Probably because when he use to post is was like reading a 12 year old's book of curse words.............

  18. Without getting too involved in this topic, what i see from standing on the outside is people are not against this stuff being re-issued, but if it is re-issued with consent of the bands then why isn't it made widely available to all music lovers?

Surely it is in the best interest of the band to sell 5 copies at $12 compared to 1 copy at $50.

Is there anywhere we can go to pick up these releases for $10-12 a pop, or do we have to battle it out on an ebay auction where these often go for unrealistic prices?

The fact that  the only copies are auctioned on ebay doesn't really give the perception that these cds are re-issued to benefit either the band or the fans.

If these were made availalbe to the general public then I think folks would be far more accepting of the whole re-issue thing.

    Just my 2c.....

Lindsay...I dunno...I DO think their are people who are against these things being reissued. I've heard everything from "My collection will devalue"....to people worrying that their eBay sales will take a hit....so, I do believe that there are some who are opposed to the reissues.

I do agree with you, that it would definitely be more economical for Retrospect to sell their items differently. But..then again, it depends on the type of contract they have with their respective bands. Just from a cashflow standpoint alone it would benefit Retrospect....but this is his baby and he'll handle it how he wants. Remember...ultimately, the success of his sales will determine whether or not he even stays in business. And as any owner of a company will attest...the idea is to make money...but you have to stay in business to do so!!! LOL Time will tell......

Maybe you can ask BrianJ of this message board. He has recently signed with Retrospect to have his material reissued. Maybe he can shed some light onto why..or how bands are 'ok' with how Retrospect is handling sales.

Not to mention that a silver pressing would help

  19. I finally got mine this morning. I must say, it's one hell of a nice package for a re-release. They didn't skimp on anything!  :drink:

Yeah, I got mine this morning too T-Bone. I was beginning to think Ryan had something against Illinois & Minnesota :P

Anyway, bravo on this cd! Everythings top notch from production to artwork & everything in between. Now...........who's next???? I for one **Cough, cough** David at Suncity...**Cough, Cough** :P would like to see the second Kingofthehill cd released. If anyone has heard it, it's awesome! They are easy to find also :P
