  1. So Kiss do pretty much the same thing every time, swapping in and out a few songs mainly from the very early albums.

A few years ago I saw a cover band at a festival and they played The Oath and the crowd went off. And this wasn't a Kiss crowd, there were 4 or 5 cover bands playing but they all went crazy when they started this song.
So I got to thinking what my ideal Kiss concert would be, with them plaing songs they don't (or rarely) play live.
Came up with this set list - what would be yours?

    I Stole Your Love

    Domino

    I’m A Legend Tonight

What Makes The World Go 'Round

    Hard Luck Woman

    Spit - Gene blood

    Hard Times

    All Hell’s Breakin’ Loose

I Want You - Paul Flies

    Is That You

    The Oath

    Tomorrow And Tonight

    King Of Hearts

    Unholy - Gene flies

Let’s Put The X In Sex

Every Time I Look At You

I Just Wanna - crowd participation

    Encore

    Hide Your Heart

Take It Off - crowd participation (lifting t-shirts)

    Uh! All Night

  2. I will not buy a CD until the US/AUD dollar is reasonable again

I travel to China and other countries a couple of time a year importing goods. Most currencies are in line with the USD so when AUD/USD is bad, so it pretty much everything else.

Paying 20 to 30% more than I was a few years ago sucks. Hopefully it gets closer to parity again in the near future...

  3. There Will Be Blood.
Been sick with the flu and this came on so I watched it again even though I hated it the first time.

Thought it may be better second time around and it wasn't :(

    Interstellar.

Saw this first time in Taiwan, so nice to see it without subtitles etc.

Always had the feeling that it could have been better without getting so weird at the end.

  4.

Geoffman... I am shocked that Art Nation didn't make it into your top 30 thus far. While I'm not sure it will make it into my top 5 for the year, I'm pretty sure it's in the top 10.

Oh, and as for the Cutethesane/Glen discussion above...

Cute...... he thinks your cute!!! :rofl2:

    :aw::wub:

  5. Some old movie - The Wrong Man I think.

    B&W with Henry Fonda.

Not bad actually - I'm not usually able to stay on the channel when I'm flicking and come across an old movie, but ended up watching this one.

Weird ending, which was then explained further with a text overlay.

  6. a band could have a CD full of 7/10 songs, which is not really a great album;

Don't understand how 7/10 is not a great song.

I guess that helps me make sense of the whole rating system.

I guess if it is music, rather than the spoken word, or poetry, then any song automatically gets maybe a 3?

If listening to it doesn't make you want to poke your ears with skewers, then it becomes a 5?

Something that you're happy to listen to more than once gets a 10?

It's all a bit weird and confusing to me, so like I said, I'm not gonna play because I'd just be rating to a different criteria.

But I like the idea of the ratings system - it may help me discover some new music

however, I guess I'll only be looking to check out the songs/albums that rate over 90%

Only request I'd have is if each band could be described, Heavy Rock, AOR, Country (Mike Tramp), Glam, etc

  7. My main worry was just that you weren't actually hearing the best albums available. And I guess that COP review verifies that tenfold. Judging by those scores, is that basically the best album you've ever heard in your life, lol? That is extremely generous, and just makes me wonder what you'd think of some of the albums from this year we've all rated quite high. Something like Care of Night, Degreed, Issa or Room Experience or something.

OK, so I listened to C.O.P. - a couple of songs on youtube.

Not really my cup of tea. Kind of like a Guiffria vibe to them - very AOR, and while I like some Guiffria, and a little bit of AOR at times, it's really not my kind of music.

Let me know if any of the others you recommend are somewhere between Tuff and Maiden and I'll give them a listen :)

Not dissing the AOR, just prefer heavier or sleazier music.

  8. But the album is irrelevant to the point I was trying to make.

All music is subjective and will be interpreted differently by different people.

My point was that this was an album that I really like, one of my favorites, yet it only gets an 82% because there are some songs I think are average on it.

I could probably only find a few albums where all songs would rate over an 8/10

Just randomly going back through the thread and selecting an album I see C.O.P. – State Of Rock

    1.Loner 100
    2. I Want The World To Know 95
    3. Nightmare 96
    4. Without you 90
    5. On the run 89
    6. In my dreams 98
    7. She’s gone 85
    8. In the night 84
    9. Broken Heart 86
    10. Darkness 100

I've never heard this album before, nor the band, but based on the ratings I sure as hell better go out and get it because Darkness and Loner are PERFECT SONGS
Then there are 3 more which are very close to perfect.

  9. OK, so I look at say Dr' Feelgood.
    An album I really love.

    T.N.T. (Terror 'N Tinseltown) - intro doesn't count
    Dr. Feelgood - 10
Slice Of Your Pie - 3
    Rattlesnake Shake - 4
    Kickstart My Heart - 10
    Without You - 10
    Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.) - 10
    Sticky Sweet - 5
    She Goes Down - 10
Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away) - 10
    Time For Change - 10
Based on that the whole album gets an 82% from me.
Drop 3 songs and it gets 100%
Yet it still rates and an amazing album regardless, and sometimes you need some fillers for contrast between average and killer songs.
So based on that, I'd rarely rate an album over 90%.
Maybe I'm not playing the rating game right?
Maybe I'm too harsh in rating some songs?
Maybe I don't feel the need to get over 80% for it to be a great album?
I guess in the end my scale is simply different, so it's probably better for me not to play and warp the other ratings...

When I was looking up the track list to copy & paste I came across a track by track from Vince & Nikki.

They seem to feel the same as as me about some songs.

  10. Bobaflex - Anything That Moves

    1 Burn Them All - intro - doesn't count

2 Start A War - in your face rocker with a nice slower chorus - 70

    3 Lose Control - 60

4 Dry Your Eyes - cool riffs and vibe - 70

5 Mama (Don’t Take My Drugs Away) - after a few listens is very addictive - 90

    6 A Spider In The Dark - heavy ballad - 70

7 Show Me - one of my favorites, reminds me of older HCSS - 90

8 Objectified - nothing fresh with this song, kind of a filler - 50

9 Turn Me On - ballad, but too acoustic and could have been better with 'more' - 60

    10 You Don’t Wanna Know - 65

11 Pray To The Devil - nothing special, bit of a Motley 'Wild Side' vibe - 50

12 End Of The World - not bad - 60

13 Forgiven - kind of typical last song - 50

    Overall 65.4%

Probably fairly accurate, a mellower, less powerful album compared to the last one.

  11. Alright, I'll have a go, even though I still find this system kinda weird.

I doubt I am anywhere close to as generous as everyone else seems to be here.

The way I see it, over 90% would be reserved for maybe 20 albums total.

80 - 90% would be an exceptional album

    70 - 80% is great

    60 - 70% is good

    50 - 60% is OK

40 - 50% would be a disappointment based on previous music by the same band

Wouldn't bother rating anything lower than that.

The Burning Crows - Murder At The Gin House

This CD is probably my favorite of the year so far, so it will be interesting to see how it rates overall for me.

HArd for me to really discren between say a 70 and a 72% so I'm gonna stock with whole numbers except for a few 'half's'

Hell To Pay - average standard AC/DC type song - 50
Come On - very Babylon AD - 60
Shine - lots of hooks and melodies - 80
    Alright - nice and catchy - 70
Goodbye (To The Sunshine) - best song on the album - 100
    1137 - also very Babylon AD - 65
    Little Bit More - 60
She’s The Summertime - nice catchy song 85
Feels Like Home - not sure too many people have a 'shot of wine' - 65
Holding On - nice ballad, very Bon Jovi - 70

So overall that's 70.5% which makes it a good to great CD, which is about right.

I fond that many CD's for me would rate poorly overall, but would carry maybe 4 or 5 amazing songs, so while the CD would be very highly regarded, it may not rate as well as I think it would.

  12. Actually, Southern Sons never did it for me. Same with Kings Of The Sun.

Remember a cool BB Steal song from, ages ago. Heartbeat Away I think

Also a very cool song by Cattletruck - Rain

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sX4WRBRWncM

Of the rest you mentioned - Pseudo Echo is a massive omission on my part.
    Race is an AMAZING disc.

Remember seeing them off Bell Street in some little club just because we had nothing to do and they came out and rocked hard and kicked my ass.

They are playing the Burvale Hotel, just up the road from me, but I doubt they'll play much off the CD any more. More like Kiss who play only their older hits that the bigger fan base knows.
Not sure if I'll be overseas or not, but if not I may try and make it anyway.

    Interesting fact.
Brian Canham released a solo CD under the band name "Brill" which I bought, and it pretty good.

10 years later I got to know my kids music teacher at their primary school, named Darren Downs.

Turns out he sung on that CD (he freaked out when I pulled it when he was at my place) and sure enough he was there in the credits.

Apparently one night he was playing in his band and Brian was there and liked what he heard and asked him to come down to the studio and record.
    Cool story.

Another band who had a great song were Stand - Somebody's Waiting.

Saw them when they supported Mike Tramp when he was living here and then when they finished their set would go on and become hos backing band.

  13. My favorites in no particular order

Candy Harlots - Five Wicked Ways

    Roxus - Nighstreet

    DeMont - Body Language

Choirboys - Evolver (Also S/T, Midnight Sun and Big Bad Noise)

Rose Tattoo - Scared For Life

Rick Springfield - Rock Of Life - Can't recommend this enough - great hard rock
1927 - ...ish (not hard rock)

    The Angels - Howling

    The Poor - Who Cares

Skyhooks - anything, but Latest & Greatest is your best bet if you've never heard of them

Cold Chisel - anything, but a greatest hits is your best bet if you've never heard of them, or Twentieth Century just for Flame Trees and Saturday Night

Dragon - Body And The Beat

Uncanny X-men - Cos Life Hurts

The Screaming Jets - I'd do a greatest hits - good songs are really good, others average

Little River Band - just do a greatest hits

    Painters & Dockers

    The Hard Ons

    Mondo Rock

Also saw The Dead Daisies last night supporting Kiss. John Corabi now singing for them, having replaced Jon Stevens. Apparently an Aussie band, which is pretty international now. I think the only Aussie left is maybe a guitarist who is from Baby Animals.
Anyway, they sounded good - never heard them before, but the music was solid.

  14. Right - Seeing as Geoff has mercilessly being plugging the excellent Roxus - Nightstreet disc, I was wondering about anyone else's opinion on some other quality Aussie bands.

I have been spinning De Mont -'Body Language' this morning and definately prefer it above the Roxus disc, generally more consistent for me. Also a band of real merit is Noiseworks with the 'S/T' and especially the humungous 'Touch' album. Rick Price and his 'Heaven Knows' disc is another of my faves although maybe a little 'Lite' for some.

Jimmy Barnes - Freight Train Heart (thanx for the reminder TIM) is also another mighty fine disc as well.

And of course not forgetting one of the best bands ever to come from the land of 'Oz' that being the mighty Rose Tattoo. I don't expect Geoff will like 'The Tatts' very much (although I may be wrong)???

Opinions on any/All of the above.

Going back to the first post which I just read.

Nightstreet is pretty amazing, only omission on it was Body Heat, which I don't think was ever released on CD aside from the live album.

DeMont for me have 2 amazing songs on that CD - So Easy and In MY Dreams. The rest are good or average.

  15. She really enjoyed it.

We decided to watch from the podium that Paul 'flies' to which was pretty cool.

Also right next to the blowers for the confetti at the end.

Had no idea how much came out. There was a good 3" on the floor around us.

Still the best live theatric show I've seen, but Motley cam close on their farewell tour.

After them come Twisted Sister, less for the theatrics but more the engagement.

The Robbie Williams who also put on an amazing show.

Paul's voice is indeed close to shot.

He really struggled with some of the older songs.

    Gene was fine.

Setlist wasn't ideal for me, with way too many Gene songs, probably because of the reason above.

Still not a big fan of Creatures Of Te Night

Never really considered I Love It Loud as one of their better songs, but it always works like well.

  16. ...here's the original Women In Uniform, sung by legendary Aussie group Skyhooks.

I was lucky enough to see them when they reformed for Rocktober '87 (I think) before the lead singer Shirley Straughan died in a helicopter accident.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Scn934CwsM

As I was growing up a young kid, the clear order of my favorite bands went...

    ABBA

    Skyhooks

    Kiss

    Twisted Sister

    Iron Maiden

Gradually got heavier I guess :)

  17. Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade. Probably my favorite of the 3, well, 4 now.

Edge Of Tomorrow. One of my all time favorite movies. Groundhog Day on steroids.

The Wedding Ringer. Average and predictable. About everything you'd expect in the movie. Funny at times.
