  1.

    Brace yourselves ...

'Shaun the Sheep: The Movie', with my girls :)

How was it? The kids and I are fans!

It was a lot better than I thought it would be - and, considering it had no 'proper' dialogue in it, really funny in places. There were some nice touches (Nick Park plays himself, the rooster is straight out of Chicken Run), so I can thoroughly recommend it.

  2. I would always quote Marillion as my favourite lyrics - peotry in motion

Forgotten Sons [about Northern Ireland and the poor souls who were caught up in it]

You're just another coffin on its way down the emerald aisle

When your children's stony glances mourn your death in a terrorist's smile

The bomber's arm placing fiery gifts on the supermarket shelves

Alley sings with shrapnel detonate a temporary hell

    Forgotten Sons

From the dole queue to the regiment a profession in a flash

But remember Monday signings when from door to door you dash

On the news a nation mourns you unknown soldier, count the cost

For a second you'll be famous but labelled posthumous

    *****************

    and one more -

Sugar Mice - [about a guy losing everything including his family through alcoholism....very sad song]

Well the toughest thing that I ever did was talk to the kids on the phone

When I heard them asking questions I knew that you were all alone

Can't you understand that the government left me out of work

I just couldn't stand the looks on their faces saying, "What a jerk"

So if you want my address it's number one at the end of the bar

Where I sit with the broken angels clutching at straws and nursing our scars

Blame it on me, blame it on me,

Sugar mice in the rain, your daddy took a raincheck

Fish has always been a brilliant lyricist .. 'Forgotten Sons' is probably my favourite Marillion song, but I have always liked these lines from 'Slainte Mhath':

"From the dreams on the barbed wire at Flanders and Bilston Glen

From a Clydeside that rusts from the tears of its broken men

From the realisation that all we've been left behind

Is to stand like our fathers before us in the firing line

Waiting on the whistle to blow

We stand here waiting on the whistle to blow

They promised us miracles, and the whistle still blows

Broken promises, and the whistle still blows ..."

And at the other end of the spectrum, another one from Dave Lee Roth:

"I asked her: 'How the hell d'you get in those tight blue jeans?'

She said: 'For starters, you can buy me a drink' ..."

  3. I've always liked 'Black by Pearl Jam:

All the love gone bad turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be...

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky,
But why, why, why can't it be, can't it be mine?

David Lee Roth has always been a good one for lyrics:

    Here's a word about my ex-girlfriend
Towards the end, conflict off and on
And I told her one night, "Honey every time we fight
I'll write a verse to this song"

Well, things got bad and things got worse
    But still I struggled on
So sit back and get all comfortable
'Cause this little tune's six fuckin' hours long

  4. '82/'83 was when I took my first steps into the world of rock/metal, so some immediate favourites are:

    Toyah: The Changeling

    Judas Priest: Screaming For Vengeance

    Ultravox: Quartet

    Rainbow: Straight Between The Eyes

    Diamond Head: Borrowed Time

    Manowar: Battle Hymns

    Black Sabbath: Live Evil

    MSG: Assault Attack

    Whitesnake: Saints & Sinners

    Accept: Restless And Wild

    Demon: The Unexpected Guest

Krokus: One Vice At A Time

    Night Ranger: Dawn Patrol

    Scorpions: Blackout

    Twisted Sister: Under The Blade

Tygers Of Pan Tang: The Cage

  5. A very quick, 'off the top of my head' list for 1981:

    Van Halen: Fair Warning

    Whitesnake: Come An’ Get It

    Def Leppard: High ‘n’ Dry

    Iron Maiden: Killers

Motley Crue: Too Fast For Love

    Black Sabbath: Mob Rules

Blue Oyster Cult: Fire Of Unknown Origin

AC/DC: For Those About To Rock …

    Demon: Night Of The Demon

    Saxon: Denim And Leather

  6. I love Coverdale's voice, and he's had a hand in some brilliant albums over the years ... but why, for the love of Gawd, does he think this is a good idea?

I already own 'Burn' and 'Stormbringer', so there's nothing here to remotely interest me ... the last thing I want to listen to is the sound of a man who appears to be all out of ideas and has settled for pissing all over his legacy ...

  7. It's an interesting thought - if you're talking about an album being ahead of its time in terms of writing, overall sound, etc. (as well as influencing what came after), then you'll probably find that no two people come up with the same answer :)

Montrose's debut, maybe? (I did think of the first Van Halen album, but then I remembered what a debt it owes to Montrose.) Something by the Beatles? Or Zeppelin?

I agree that Boston's first album is head and shoulders above anything else around at that time (as well as for many years after.)

The Sex Pistols' one and only album? Regardless of whether or not you like punk, there was nothing else to compare it to back in the 70s, and it directly influenced a whole bunch of bands that came afterwards (as well as managing to outrage most of 'the establishment' :)) Could it be considered 'great'?

God help me - 'Bat Out Of Hell', maybe?

  8.

The chorus in this song is absolutely horrible

Glad I have Gibbo, Geoff and you who agree with me on this. Great verses, music sounds nice, but that chorus is just plain terrible.

Did you ever get into Stone Gods? The band that Dan Hawkins put together when his brother left The Darkness the first time? They were pretty good - The Darkness' bass player took over vocals (and switched to rhythm guitar), and they recruited a new guy to play bass. They only managed one album and a couple of EPs, which is a shame ...

  9. After a quick trawl through my collection, my revised list looks like this:

    Iron Maiden: Somewhere In Time

    Metallica: Master Of Puppets

    Queensryche: Rage For Order

    Elixir: Son Of Odin

    W.A.S.P.: Inside The Electric Circus

    Van Halen: 5150

    Megadeth: Peace Sells

    Ozzy Osbourne: The Ultimate Sin

    Accept: Russian Roulette

    Warlock: True As Steel

    Motorhead: Orgasmatron

    Judas Priest: Turbo

    Cinderella: Night Songs

    Bon Jovi:Slippery When Wet

Poison: Look What The Cat Dragged In

    Fifth Angel: Fifth Angel

Stryper: To Hell With the Devil

Flotsam And Jetsam: Doomsday For The Deceiver

... there will no doubt be more to come :)

  10. Off the top of my head, and in no particular order, some standouts from 1983 are:

    Def Leppard: Pyromania

    Iron Maiden: Piece Of Mind

Ozzy Osbourne: Bark At The Moon

    Mercyful Fate: Melissa

Motley Crue: Shout At The Devil

    Thin Lizzy: Thunder & Lightning

    Y&T: Mean Streak

Blue Oyster Cult: The Revolution By Night

    Toyah: Love Is The Law

    The Police: Synchronicity

Twisted Sister: You Can't Stop Rock 'n' Roll

    ZZ Top: Eliminator

Bryan Adams: Cuts Like A Knife

Marillion: Script For A Jester's Tear

Thank you, kourosofsteel3 - I'd forgotten about MSG's 'Built To Destroy' and Satan's 'Court In The Act' ...

  11. Hey Gibbo, agreed cabal is better than the movie, but when is a book not?

Alien 3,bit of a disjointed mess. Did you see Neil Blomkamp's pic ideas for a new Alien film from a few months back? Looks like the studio also like it and announced last week he'll be making a sequel.

Yeah, I still have a soft spot for the third Alien film, though ... most of the actors are English, and have appeared in various TV programmes here over the years, so we're more used to seeing them in more family-orientated fare ... watching Paul McGann playing an unhinged Welshman makes me chuckle every time.

I'm intrigued by the idea of a new Alien film ... but I still carry the scars from Alien: Resurrection, so I'm not getting too excited ... yet ;)

  12.

    AC/DC: Live

    Alice in Chains: Dirt

Bon Jovi - Keep the Faith

    Catherine Wheel: Ferment

Celtic Frost - Parched With Thirst Am I and Dying

    Def Leppard - Adrenalize

Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark

    Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction

    Motörhead - March ör Die

Nine Inch Nails - Broken (EP)

Paradise Lost - Shades of God

Great King Rat: Great King Rat

    Faster Pussycat: Whipped!

Soul Asylum - Grave Dancer's Union

    Manic Street Preachers: Generation Terrorists

I have NO idea why some of these have appeared as hyperlinks ... I thought I'd got rid of all that rubbish!
