  1. V-A-Bound-For-Hel-On-The-Sunset-Strip-li

Specialty label Numero Group is shining a spotlight on early ‘80s L.A. glam with ”Bound for Hell: On the Sunset Strip”, a fantastic release (October 28th) that takes a deep dive into Strip mainstays that may not be on the tip of your tongue… but should be.

Artists featured include scene heavyweights Black ‘N Blue, Rough Cutt, Armored Saint and Lizzy Borden, alongside long lost tracks from Reddi Killowatt, Angeles, Max Havoc, SIN, Romeo (to name a few) including future members of Ratt, Kix, Autograph, etc. ”Bound For Hell: On The Sunset Strip” also pays particular attention to the female musicians who challenged the testosterone-laden world of the Strip, with entries and recollections from Jaded Lady, Leather Angel, Lisa Baker, Hellion, and Bitch.

The collection includes the previously unreleased very first song written & recorded by Black ‘N Blue in 1981, an unreleased Rough Cutt early song, etc – in fact, many tracks are previously unreleased or impossible to find 7” singles, and with a good remastered sound quality.
There’s as well terrific extensive liner notes from music critic and co-author of Louder Than Hell: The Definitive Oral History of Metal, Katherine Turman, as well as first-hand testimonials, photos and show flyers – all into a 78-page book (full scans) in a similar Rock Candy Magazine fashion.
But wait, we have more: the limited edition comes with a Bonus Cassette, including 5 additional rare tracks!

We all know about Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Quiet Riot, W.A.S.P. and the rest of the US first-wave glam metal bands that launched off the Sunset Strip in the early ‘80s. But how about the less-celebrated rockers that trolled Hollywood at the turn of the decade?

V.A. - Bound For Hell: On The Sunset Strip [Limited Edition + bonus cassette] 2

Said Adam Luksetich, producer and researcher behind the collection, “The infamous Sunset Strip glam metal scene of the ‘80s is one that’s been covered excessively, and for a good reason. But usually, the analysis never goes too far past bands like Mötley Crüe, Poison, Quiet Riot, etc.
Our goal with Bound For Hell was to narrow in on the equally impressive independent or unsigned bands that thrived in that same scene but in most cases, never benefited from the major label feeding frenzy.
With a bounty of unseen photos, pages and pages of flyers, and detailed liner notes, these bands get more time in the spotlight.”

The full color book is impressive, providing the road map of each band featured in full color book.
Amidst those pages, the story of how the scene unfurled, and eventually imploded, is told via first-hand testimonials, show flyers, and hundreds of photos, which come from the lens of acclaimed rock photographer Kevin Estrada. Estrada also serves as co-producer of the boxset.

It’s really cool to see finally released the very first song written and recorded by Black ‘N Blue in 1981, explains vocalist Jaime St. James. “This is also the year I went from drummer to singer. I’m looking forward to the release of this awesome box set as Numero Group have done a great job with gathering killer, almost lost music from back in the day with fantastic packaging”.

‘Bound for Hell: On the Sunset Strip’ is an excellent deep dive into the early ‘80s Hollywood glam metal scene with unheard music, unseen memorabilia, awesome photos, and more

  2. TODD-MICHAEL-HALL-No-Winner-Takes-All.jp

Experienced vocalist TODD MICHAEL HALL has been in the Rock business since the ’80s with the band Harlet, with Jack Starr’s Burning Starr, Reverence, etc, and from 2013 to date he’s the frontman of RIOT V.
But Hall has a solo career as well where he takes a different musical path of his metal/hard rock bands: that’s what we hear on his new solo album “No Winner Takes All“, a Classic Rock collection of songs bluesy-based and plenty of melody.
At places, the songs on this new Todd Michael Hall album brings to mind Coverdale’s ‘Restless Heart’, early Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, etc. With strong lyrics, rock solid guitar riffs, Todd’s multi-octave voice, and a clean bright production, “No Winner Takes All” results a very enjoyable album from start to finish.

Far from being a trifling exploration of an old sound by a fold of amateurs, this album is an exercise in paying tribute to the greats by a singer who were there to witness the original run of classic rock and have a deep well of talent with which to match the standards set by the originals.
Hall’s mighty wailing tenor proves both versatile enough to channel the unique personas of Brad Delp, Tommy Shaw and Geddy Lee, and also distinctive enough not to come off as a carbon copy of any one of them.

Perhaps the only thing that keeps this album from being a full on throw back to the 70s / 80s, apart from the amped up production value, is that Hall emulate a different signature sound from one song to the next, all but to the point of coming off as a tribute album of sorts.
For any rock fan who wants a bit more from their sonic cuisine than a few chords being banged out beneath a vocalist that showcases as much intrigue as a wall of drying paint, “No Winner Takes All” is a much needed breath of fresh air.

To be fair, there have been a few solid acts putting out material of late that are within the threshold of the millennial generation, but Todd Michael Hall bring a level of credibility to the art form that is a cut above the rest, showcasing that this is the music he has loved for the majority of his life.

This is VERY laid back compared to 2021's "Sonic Healing", and also, listening to a handful of tracks, this appears to be a CCM release...

    Jim Crean – vocals
    Steph Honde – guitars, bass
    Vinny Appice – drums, percussion

SCREAM TAKER is a brand new outfit consisting of veteran frontman Jim Crean (Appice Bros. Drum Wars), guitarist Steph Honde (Paul Di’Anno, Hollywood Monsters), and legendary drummer Vinny Appice (Dio, Black Sabbath). The three musicians have created a classic hard rock album in the vein of Dio, which is no surprise as Vinny is one of the original Dio members.
The trio debut CD ”Kill The Beautiful” unleashes 11 original songs of classic hard with melody where the Dio influence is heard, but musically I found more similarity with Last In Line – the other Vinny band featuring Vivian Campbell.
The band recorded the album during the pandemic and post Jim Crean’s short lived tenure with former KISS guitarist Vinnie Vincent.

Crean was to perform with Vincent in his comeback performance alongside Carmine Appice (Ozzy Osbourne, Vanilla Fudge, Appice Brothers) and Tony Franklin (The Firm, Blue Murder), which unfortunately never materialized.
So instead, we get an amazing album from Scream Taker, a classic hard rock album with an ’80s but also ’70s touches.

Take as example “Stone Cold”. Its dark riffs takes you back to Black Sabbath’s primal sound, with lyrics taking on a mystical, epic adventure. The concept is about the King of the Vampires searching for his queen. Once the King has chosen his bride, he must bite her and she becomes his queen, to forever serve the master and oversee the undead. The husband of the queen relentlessly tries to rescue her to no avail. The hero falls and is brought down by the undead, and is left to roam for eternity.

Other highlights include the title track, ‘Shattered Mirror’, ‘Blindman’, ‘Burning Flame’, all more melodic, at places bringing to mind classic Alice Cooper and Hollywood Monsters as well, then closer ‘Shine On’ is another doomy, sinister sabbath-esque number.
Jim Crean gives a very solid vocal performance matched by Honde’s classic guitar riffs and Vinny Appice’s signature drumming.
A well produced and executed record with a lot of things to enjoy.

  5. From Loudwire Steve Perry Suing Two Journey Members Over Song Trademarks (loudwire.com)

    attachment-Steve-Perry-Neal-Schon-Jonath

Former Journey frontman Steve Perry has taken issue with one of the band's current business practices and has filed a petition to cancel the trademark registrations filed by two of the band's other members back in 2020.

According to Ultimate Classic Rock, Perry filed the petition against longtime Journey members Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain, claiming that the pair had filed to register 20 Journey tracks through Freedom JN LLC for usage in marketing hats, T-shirts, athletic jackets and other paraphernalia, a move he did not agree to. The singer claims that the 2020 filing violated an earlier agreement that stipulated that agreements must be made with "prior, written unanimous consent of all partners in each instance."

The petition lists the following tracks where the trademark registration will now be re-evaluated: "Good Morning Girl," "Only the Young," "Trial By Fire," "Any Way You Want It," "Stay Awhile," "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'," "Wheel in the Sky," "Raised on Radio," "When You Love a Woman," "Open Arms," "Still They Ride," "Who's Crying Now," "Hopelessly in Love," "Send Her My Love," "After the Fall," "Girl Can't Help It," "Ask the Lonely," "I'll Be Alright Without You," "Stone in Love" and "Separate Ways." Perry's petition was filed in Woodland Hills, California on Sept. 11, 2022.

Journey went on hiatus after the band's 1987 Raised on Radio tour, but the singer returned in 1995 for their reunion tour and the 1996 album Trail By Fire. In 1998, Perry would once again bow out as the band's lead singer, but the band continued with Steve Augeri fronting the group until 2006, Jeff Scott Soto taking over vocals between 2006-2007 and Arnel Pineda joining the band in 2007. Perry was with the band at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2017.

Tensions arose again within the band in 2021 when longtime bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith were booted from the group when they attempted to gain control of the band's business decisions. Schon and Cain were able to use their 1998 written agreement with Perry to maintain their rights to the group's name and trademark and a financial settlement was met with Valory and Smith as the group continued on without them.

In July of this year, Schon stated in an interview that he was starting to rekindle his friendship with Perry, though noting that they were not trying to get together musically again. Schon also noted that much of their discussions centered around Journey's trademark. In a separate July interview, Schon stated that he would not rule out a Steve Perry return as the discussion turned to celebrating the band's 50th anniversary.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Neal Schon Responds to Steve Perry’s Journey Lawsuit (loudwire.com)

Journey guitarist Neal Schon has responded to former vocalist Steve Perry's recent lawsuit against him and keyboardist Jonathan Cain, calling the claim a "bunch of total crap."

Perry's suit claims that Schon and Cain registered 20 of Journey's most successful hits through their company Freedom JN LLC in 2020 for usage on a variety of merchandise items, which is something he didn't agree to and therefore violates an agreement that they'd made in the past, which required consent from all members of the band, including himself.

Schon has since shared a link to the lawsuit on his social media, and provided a written statement in the comments.

"What a bunch of total crap. Here's how it goes friends. Jon Cain calls a board of directors meeting out of nowhere then before I found out about the meeting Jonathan came to me and said he didn't like what they were planning," Schon wrote, citing bassist Ross Valory, Perry and former manager Herbie Herbert as being involved.

"On that meeting Steve, Ross, Smith and Herbie voted myself and Cain off the board of directors and Steve and all voted Ross in my place and Smith in Jon's. They all knew at this time I'd been investigating our trademarks for years trying to get to the bottom of all corruption as we found (my wife and I) that nothing had ever been trademarked besides our music. They all went for a takeover and it didn't work. Quite simple," the guitarist continued.

"So my wife Micheale Schon found a legitimate trademark attorney that wasn't in the corrupt musical circles and we were then successful in attaining it to protect everything we built. We had been getting ripped off since the beginning until I shut it down."

Schon questioned why none of the other members' attorneys ever helped the band in terms of trademarking their material, and called it a "giant corrupted ring" of individuals who ended up benefiting financially from their merchandise. As a result, he and Cain wanted to register all of their album and song titles.

"The more we got educated on how songwriting and copyrights have nothing to do with trademarks... You haven't heard the last of this friends. We are going to peel back the onion."

    See the full statement below.

This news comes just a few months after Perry and Schon had supposedly been working on reconciling. In an interview with Vulture in July, the guitarist said that the pair had been "talking and getting to know each other again," though he clarified that the rekindling wasn't indicative of a musical reunion, and was, in fact, related to the trademark issue.

A few weeks later, he discussed Journey's 2023 plans, which involved celebrating the band's 50th anniversary, and he didn't rule out the possibility of Perry and former keyboardist Gregg Rolie participating.
