  1. I've had a good listen to 15 YOSO tracks that were recorded live sometime in 2009 and my prediction is that Toto/AOR fans who don't really like progressive music will perhaps be a little disappointed/uninterested.

The band has all the hallmarks of a progressive rock band and a lot of tracks running at 6-9 minutes long. I suppose this is not all that surprising given the make-up of the band and links to YES though I personally was hoping for something a bit more along the lines of TOTO, but apart from the voice of Bobby Kimball (and some TOTO covers), I'm not hearing a great deal of TOTO's influence here.

That being said, the songs I've heard are excellent and I imagine the upcoming YOSO album will please many people. Obviously one shouldn't comment too much before hearing the actual release and the tracks I heard may be quite different to what will be on the album but these are just a few early impressions of mine based upon some live bootleg recordings.

  2. Haha, I wasn't sure what the term "40's" meant, never heard it here in Australia. So I did some research. This comes from the Urban Dictionary:

"A bottle containing 40 fluid ounces of malt liquor beer. The beer is of low quality and fairly cheap to buy. A bottle can run you usually between 2 and three dollars depending on brand. 40's are popular in a variety of areas and are drunken by many types of people. Gangstas will drink 40's and will sometimes pour out a little of the beer onto the ground for their dead homies. Teenagers also like to drink 40's because it is a fast way to get drunk and all the beer is in one bottle opposed to drinking several smaller 12 ounce bottles and/or cans. Some brands of beer produced in the 40 ounce variety are Clot 45, Olde English, Mickey's, and King Cobra."

Some quality quotes from the Urban Dictionary:

    "Pass me that 40 motherfucka!"

"I'm gonna pick up some 40's for tonight."

"Judy, get me a 40 bitch."

"Yo i got a set of forty in my trunk lets screw theys ho's and get drunk."

"Hey my man go to the liquor n grab some 40z. I wana get shitfaced."

"Shut up and give me a 40, dumbass."

Out of interest, the largest beer you can routinely buy here in Australia (that I know of) are called "Tallie's" which is a 24oz/750mL bottle compared with a 40 which I now know is American vernacular for a 40oz/1.18L. Americans always have to show us up! What about the English and Irish, what's their biggest beer?

  3. I think I'm only speaking to Geoff here, but anyway the Motor Ace DVD is now out.

"Motor Ace was an Australian rock band that formed in Melbourne in 1998. Signed to Mushroom Records, they released 3 albums, the second 'Shoot This' debuted at #1 on the ARIA chart. in 2005, one of our finest rock bands called it quits. This film captures their final ever performance shot at the Hi-Fi Bar in Melbourne on a sweltering summer night in December 2005. Interwining reflections and candid filmed footage of the band members with one final blistering performance, this film is both a tribute and a lament. Produced & Directed by Rhys Graham & Natasha Gadd.

  4. It's weeks (months?) since I bought any used CD's. Whether it's the glut of excellent new releases that have taken all my cash recently(H.E.A.T., Auras etc etc) or just the fact that there just aren't many used CD's about I don't know. It was good this weekend to visit a friend and scour his regular haunts, although it's always difficult to decide who goes first!

  5. Ok guys can anyone confirm, was John Waite playing in Melbourne on April 24th???

    According to this he was.

How the fuck did I not hear about this. I don't exactly live under a rock. I read all the melodic rock website updates every day so how would something like this get past me.

Is there another Melbourne somewhere in the world?

If he was here and I missed it, I'll be so pissed off.

  6. Add Radical Records in Dandenong, Victoria to your list aswelll.

I helpout most days, Andre is one customer along with Jules from the Deadthings. They got a website aswell, Radicalrecords.com.au.

    :beerbang:

    Radical Records

Yeah they seem to have a decent range of new hard rock and even some AOR stuff as well. It would be nice if they listed prices but they state on the website that they can't list prices due to the fact that most of their items are imports, and therefore prices fluctuate. But they do state most items are $29-$39. I think they should have set prices, not prices that fluctuate, that puts me off a bit.

It's really good to see more Aussie stores stocking Hard Rock / AOR releases but in all honesty at $30+ per CD plus postage it often still works out more economical to buy the CD's from OS due to the fact that you can wait and purchase a bulk lot of CD's from NEH or AOR Heaven etc. and combine postage costs without cases.

  7. A few new places for the Aussies to check out:

Metal Massacre Online - Started just a few weeks ago. Mainly metal but some Hard Rock / MHR as well. Spoke to them and it seems they may be getting a bunch of Frontiers Records titles soon. Fingers crossed.

Soundmass - Aussie based online store, specialising in Christian AOR, Hard Rock and Metal. Mostly metal but I did find a few good AOR titles on there as well.

Realm of Kaos is a new store located at 154 Peel St. Melbourne. Haven't been there yet but apparently they have a selection of Hard Rock titles as well as lots of metal.

  8. Trapped - Colonel Abrahams

All Out Of Love & Lost In Love - Air Supply

Devil Woman - Cliff Richard

    And probably thousands more .............

All Out Of Love is an absolute classic! Nothing guilty about that (in my opinion)!

No offence, but I think you need to step it up - your selections are far too good to be guilty pleasures! I was truly embarrassed typing mine and could probably add some more shockers to the list as well...

    Guilty pleasures eh.

I'll step this up a notch, just to name a few:

All For One - I Swear

Tone Loc - Funky Cold Medina

Roxette - Fading Like A Flower

    Jewel - Hands

Bonnie Tyler - Have You Ever Seen the Rain

    Faith Hill - Breathe

Dan Hill - to embarrassed to say which song

Taylor Dayne - I'll Be Your Shelter

I'm outta here, never to be seen again. Nice knowin' you all.

    :drag:

  9. Finally I got my hands on a copy of this - wow!!! I wasn't really much of a Crashdiet fan before now but this disc kicks ass. Reminds me so much of the debut Skid Row but also reminds me of later day Skid Row (ie Thickskin) at times as well.

I like every track. Wasn't too keen on the opener but the title track is awesome.

    Favorite tracks:

    1. Generation Wild

    2. Save Her

    3. Rebel
