I like it. I found Beyond Good and Evil contained good songs but had a very busy and cluttered production.

This album sounds a bit more stripped down which is what the Cult are good at.

Missed this, very surprised to read that he was on BBC! Was it a full interview, etc? (If so, I bet they just wahnted to talk about 'Final Countdown'! )

Haha. They did talk a lot about the meaning of the final countdown. But played a good two mins of the new single.

The female presenter was also enamoured with the quality of his skin too!

He actually managed to say bullshit which freaked them out a bit. He handled the show well. I didn't know that he's been loving in London for a number of years now.

Not sure what all the negativity is about. I thought it was a good solid release. Quality production from Kevin Shirley and good songs.

Just as I have said a million times, I will take Stark From The Dark over anything they did early. This album is great as well, as usual. Last Look At Eden was excellent as well. This band can do no wrong and they sound much more relavent these days. Norum's tuned down crunchy guitar sound is freakin great!

The guitars don't sound 'Down Tuned' to me.

Some people make it appear that Europe have gone grunge!

 

 

The words grunge never came out of my mouth as I am not a fan of grunge, but yes, the guitars have been tuned down since Stark. And it's a good thing, not a bad thing.

 

Yeah Norum admitted he tuned them down on "SFTD", as all modern bands were (and are) doing it to make the music sound more organic and heavier. He's still a killer guitarist and the last two albums have had a big/powerful classic rock sound. I think my problem is with Tempest. His high-pitched scandi vocals sound a little odd when mixed with bluesy classic rock. It also sounded odd on "SFTD" and "Secret Society". He's an amazing vocalist, but is more suited to MR IMHO and they should've got a Glenn Hughes or maybe JLT in for these last 2 discs and just made them Norum solo discs...

 

Poppycock! The problem is Tempest?! Wash that handsome mouth of yours out with urine immediately. He's the only thing that's kept this band worth hearing for the last 3 albums - seriously. He is an amazing vocalist (and good lyricist) and the rest of the band should be trying to fit in with him, not the other way round.

 

To each their own, but to me Norum is this only real issue this band has had since their "return." I listen to a billion modern rock bands and no good ones have their guitars sounding like this, which is shameful considering he's 100 times the guitarist that any of them are. He took the down tuning too far and never really looked like rectifying it.

 

Yeah but that's kinda my point. Why doesn't Norum just stay a solo artist and use a more suitable singer? Maybe let Tempest keep the Europe name, and get Marcello in, if he's gonna stay in the MR style. Since "SFTD" the band has radically changed direction (a few times) and sound nothing like they used to, and Tempest just doesn't suit this style at all. Of course he's an amazing singer, but him singing Bluesy Classic Rock is like having Goran Edman or Jim Jidhed take over from Coverdale to sing for Whitesnake.

I think they started with that 'bluesy classic rock' sound around the time of Prisoners in Paradise. I saw them at Milton Keynes (?) that year and their set sounded very similar to the albums they are putting out now. Often using a Hammond organ type sound in the background. It is nothing new.

Actually 'the blues' makes me vomit! Europe certainly have a hint of blues about them but many bands do. Classic Rock? Downtuned? It's a pretty good blend whatever it is.

If you like old Europe then the new HEAT album may be more up your alley!

I like Jerry Shirley's beefy production.

If you get a poor mp3 copy, it can sound bad.

It's quite punchy in the bottom end.

I just realised what Whiskey Tango Foxtrott relates to.

I like the fact that you can shout along to the choruses during the first listen!

Well the new one hasn't got the big production. The Quad thing that they raved about on PIP (that took off didn't it?!). But I wasn't that impressed by PIP. One or two good songs.

Couldn't find a thread for this album but I'm just playing it now and it sounds pretty immense!!

Huge riffs. I image it's what Rainbow would sound like if they were still around.

Joey hasn't lost his vocal range or his power (unlike others!) and the riffs are huge.

'Bag of Bones' really stood out for me!

I have just got hold of the new album. I just doesn't feel right listening to someone else sing.

It is a real shame because unlike the direction GW were headed, the first track is a fat paced rocker. The others a remind me a little of AC/DC!

I loved Hooked as well. Lovin' Kind is maybe the best ballad they ever did, and I'm not even a ballad guy. Have to say though all the albums before this one were their best stuff, especially the early stuff from the On Your Knees EP. As for their post Hooked LP's I think my favorite was Can't Get There From Here. Great, underrated album.

I still remember when I first heard Congo Square. It was played twice on The Friday Rock Show. The two guitar breaks are incredible.

I've given it a few spins now. There appears to be too much acoustic guitar for me and not enough riffage!

I was trying to put my finger on what was lacking! I put UFO's new one on straight after and wow...what a difference! UFO's is big punchy and warm.

 

Spot-on about the bass. This sounds thin. That said, even if it had a zillion-bucks big-production it still wouldn't be worth buying IMHO.

The songs are growing on me.

I'm seeing them live next weekend!

I found the FM comeback album more interesting and punchy.

But yes, Tyketto's new songs are growing on me a little.

The sound reminds me of a cross between early Hanoi Rocks and Manic Street Preachers.

I'm going to find it v hard to listen to them without thinking of the Steve Lee and feeling bad.
