  1. I honestly can't see me ever checking this out, but I just had a sneaky listen to 'Giving up' and 'New way out' on youtube. Like I suspected, 'Giving up' just sounds like the blander type of modern rock I don't personally enjoy, but I gotta say, 'New way out' sounded pretty freakin' nice.

Yeah you were never gonna like this one mate. Download "New Way Out" though, great lyrics and big emotion-packed tune...

  2. The only weaker track is the title track bizarrely, but that still has a killer mid section.

Yeah good point, that's probably true. Who'd have thought that out of a band like Creed, you'd get albums like the 3 from Alter Bridge and then this....

  3. This is awesome. Been on constant repeat all weekend. Great vocals (he can't compete with the range and power of Kennedy IMO, but his barratone really suits this material - maybe even more so than Kennedy's does) and stunning guitar. Biggest thing for me was the sheer quality of the song-writing and choruses on here. Only one or two that let the side down, with the rest being right up there with the AB3 disc (but obviously a bit crunchier). "New Way Out" is my new favourite song too. A top 5 disc for me.

    New Way Out is awesome!

Probably tracks 5-8 are the best, but the last 2 give them a run for their money too. 'Doesnt Matter' in particular is great.

Also tracks 2 & 3 just blow my mind - killer heavy stuff

The solo on "Leave it Alone" is killer stuff and has a nice catchy chorus. "So You're Afraid" ups the ante in heaviness but gets melodic in the chorus. Don't forget how good the last track "Decay" is. That tune is killer and so is "Proof" and "Brains".

Yeah there's not a song I don't like. "Doesn't Matter" is a killer melodic tune (great riffs too), but I'm still gonna go with "New Way Out" for sheer emotion and songwriting prowess. Should be a "Watch Over You"-type megahit IMHO.

  4. Tremonti - All I Was

When I loaded this disc into my itunes the genre came up as metal. Should have been written in 10ft tall capitals. I swear if you cut Mark Tremonti in half he'd have metal running through him. What an awesome disc is all I can say. Just one listen left me totally exhausted. Emotionally and physically. This is a roller coaster ride of traumatic ballads and utterly killer riff laden rockers. Dont expect to listen to this and feel uplifted but what you will be is stunned by the quality of Tremonti's song writing and the magnificence of his guitar playing. To me Tremonti is God and this is a career defining moment, which could possibly end up being my album of the year. We'll see.

I'm surprised at the fairly-flat response of the mainstream press to this one. To me it's truly immense....

  5. This is awesome. Been on constant repeat all weekend. 6. Shannon Noll - 'A million suns' ; I think it's Glen and Tim that have mentioned this in high regard a couple of times here. Generally Australian Idol contestants are not people I make a habit of following as not much good seems to come from them. But I have heard his other albums mentioned here and the few odd tracks I have heard did sound pretty good, so maybe I need to really take some time to get these. Why? Because this album is freakin' fantastic! A really great disc that I would never have expected from him. The title track is average and there is another clunker at the end, but the rest. Wowser. So many good songs. 'A place in the line' is brilliant, but zomfg @ 'Living in stereo.' What a track. Like I said, most of this is great, though. Good shout out, Tim & Glen.

Glad you like that one, good disc. Not as good as his killer "Lift" album IMO but back-to-form...

  7. Anyone heard of this band? Yet another one discovered through the pages of Powerplay magazine, which Ive seen somewhat unfairly (imo) maligned on this site. Sounds like decent 80s Hard Rock, quite American sounding for a Scottish band. There are a number of positive reviews of the album online and some tracks from the album on Youtube, which seem pretty good.

    The band site is: http://estrellarocks.com/

They are also on Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/estrellarock

Anyone else liking the sound of this lot?

You still buy Powerplay mag? I occasionally flick-through it when I see it in the shop (I'd never buy it) and it always amazes me. It amazes me that people with zero journalistic ability can actually make cash out of writing. :)

  8. My review of the sophomore album from Modern Day Escape, "Under the Gun," is now available over at Hardrock Haven. Click the link below to check it out:

Basically this is fairly standard-issue modern hard rock/post-metalcore stuff in the Black Veil Brides vein, albeit with a better vocalist and without the glam gimmick.

Given that the things I really hate about BVB are the vocalist and the stupid image (and the tunes that lack big hooks), I might check this out...

  9. Kutless ~ Hearts of the Innocent

    Kutless ~ Kutless/Sea of Faces

    Kutless ~ Strong Tower [Deluxe]

Kutless ~ To Know That You're Alive

    Crossfade ~ We All Bleed

James Durbin ~ Memories of a Beautiful Disaster

    Ryan Star ~ 11:59

Ryan Star ~ Songs from the Eye of an Elephant

We Are the In Crowd ~ Guaranteed To Disagree [Digipak]

Mark (about Kutless) and Tim (about Ryan Star) better be right otherwise I wasted about $10 here. ;)

You'll like the "11:59" but not the other one (is all ballads)...

  10. THE GREY

Liam Neeson in a horror/thriller about plane-crash survivors being hunted by a pack of wolves. Standard story-line, but the best film I've seen all year by some margin. Watch it.

Is that cinema or sky ?

Blue-ray (from Blockbusters) :) Awesome film. The plane-crash sequence is unbelievable, and the ending is epic...

I know I'm missing the point, but this would just annoy me as my OCD would make me keep thinking, "but wolves would never hunt people".

Not if you're sitting in your lounge watching a film, maybe. But if you're plane crashed in the far Northern Hemisphere (during winter) then I'm guessing - if they'd explored all the smaller and easier to catch prey - you'd be fair game.

  12. Slash - Apolcalyptic Love

A killer hard rock album from start to finish. From the first song it appears that Myles in singiing in a higher register than he has before but as the album settles in you get used to it and after a few spins I don't even notice it anymore. So many great songs on here but my favs are "One Last Thrill", "Standing in the Sun", "You're A Lie", "Anastasia", "Not For Me"(great lyrics and maybe the most modern sounding tune on the disc), "Hard and Fast"(balls to the wall rocker), "Far and Aways"(great ballad) and "Shots Fire". I have the special edition with two bonus tracks and DVD and it's worth getting it if you can find it for a decent price. The DVD has a making on the album and some interviews and is maybe 30 minutes long. Out of the two bonus tracks "Carolina" and "Crazy Life", "Crazy LIfe" is the best IMO. I'm sure some will hate this album for not liking the singer or not like Slash or hating GNR but hopefully people give this one a chance as I think it will be up there in my albums of the year plus it's old school rocking enough for those fans but has enough modern elements at times for those fans but without sounding exactly like a Snakepit throw back rock album or without sounding like a Modern rock album but somehow fusing both elements.

Yeah nice summary. "Anastasia" and "Far and Away" are awesome. Nice combo of some old-school and modern touches....
