♢ Black Rose - Fast Times at Black Rose High (EP) ♢
Not to be confused with a Sydney band of the same name, Melbourne hard rockers Black Rose released an EP titled 'Fast Times at Black Rose High' in 1996. According to details on the CD inserts, the band "formed as a joke" in 1994 and were lucky enough to record this EP in an L.A. studio with the help of producers Daryl Hall & John Oates (!). I strongly suspect those last few pieces of information are also a joke and are characteristic of the jovial lyrics and attitudes of the band members on this EP. Musically this is tongue-in-cheek hard rock with glam-sleaze and punk influences. There are links to a number of other Melbourne bands including Manic Suede featuring Kit Warhurst and David Lord, as well as Dashboard featuring Andre Warhurst and David Lord. Overall this may not be for everyone - but it's good fun Aussie rock and you can't argue with that. A pretty rare CD that I have only ever come across once. Any more information regarding Black Rose would be most welcome.
Track List
01. Fast Times at Black Rose High
02. Fuck Off Back to Byron Bay
03. Tell the Chicks I do Surf
04. Sweet and Sour
05. I Drive a Holden (My Ones a Brown One)
06. Rosso Live at the Dubbo RSL☆☆☆ 7wishesmusic.wordpress.com ☆☆☆

'We Belong' and 'Invincible' are two strong tracks here mate, are you sure you listen to it properly ?
Overall I like it, my initial rating is around 82.33% after leaving out two weak tracks out of the calculation.
Finally, Def Leppard is back on track again
This is for you bro. I cannot recommend it enough.
Probably this one's a better book bro, try reading one
But they do lie if you remove bad tracks before putting down a rating. ?

♢ Devils in Heaven ♢
"Devils In Heaven were an Australian group often seen touring around the east coast of Australia during the late 80′s and early 90′s. They had a strong following and in 1992 they were on a talent show called Star Search, they took out the major prize, had a single released called Say a Prayer (One departed) and then basically disappeared. They shouldve taken the music scene here by storm as to this day there are still questions asked about the band, what happened to them? What are they doing now? Well, after my quest over many years to track down this man, I was absolutely stoked to be able to talk to Devils front man Dave Whitney about pretty much everything and get these questions answered. No holds barred here and truly some interesting things I never knew about the industry or these talent shows."

Have patience with this one for Gods sake! It is a grower and once you have given it enough spins, you will realize it is up there with the best they have ever done. It took me some spins to appreciate songs like "Invincible", "Energized", "Forever Young" and even "Blind Faith". I rate this album a healthy 92 % !!!
How much is enough spins?
If it hasn't grabbed someone by the 3rd spin, then it's a case of just trying hard to like it or just trying to find a reason to like it if they persist on spinning it again and again.
This is also very true. 2 or 3 spins should be enough to determine if an album has any highlights or is worthy of repeated spins. If you're unsure after 3 spins it is likely not a good disc.
-
Agree on all counts.First spin impressions -
1. Let's Go - 7.5 - Definitely signature sound, but missing something....chorus let's it down
2. Dangerous - 8.5 - liked this one from the start. Very good hysteria sounding rocker
3. Man Enough - 5 - weird. Sounds a pretty weak version of another one bites the dust. Why??
4. We Belong - 6.5 - interesting that they all sing, decent vocals across the piece I guess....song is only pretty good though imo
5. Invincible - 5.5 - really weak inspiro rocker
6. Sea of Love - 7 - again bizarre choice of style....rips off Skynyd...found myself liking it though
7. Energized - 4.5 - manages to achieve the complete opposite - I felt sleepy and bored...
8. All Time High - 8 - good rocker - at least it sounds like DL!
9. Battle of my Own - 4 - I had a battle of my own too - trying not to stab my pen through the computer screen. Yuck.
10. Broken n brokenhearted - 7.5 - Not bad at all - decent solo
11. Forever Young - 5 - once again achieves the complete opposite...left me feeling weary and old
12. Last Dance - 7 - fairly inoffensive ballad, decent.
13. Wings of An Angel - 9 - Hurrah....life in the old beast yet. Excellent rocker and easily the best track. Great solo
14. Blind Faith - 6 - very experimental end...sounds like a cross of The Beatles and Lenny Kravitz. Not a disaster....but why? dont hate it but dont love it either.
Overall : tentative 65%
A couple of tracks might grow but cannot see it hitting 70%.
I honestly have to wonder how on earth Andrew got to his 95% rating???? Just weird that anyone could justifiably rate this album as high as that. I was genuinely excited after reading his review but the album is just not that good.
What they should have done is release an EP -
1. Let's Go
2. Dangerous
3. All Time High
4. Wings of an Angel
Now that would have been good!
Yes Glen sums this one up accurately.

Yes I'm going to avoid putting up full songs/albums for d/l unless they are a promo type item. Reason is I'm too afraid of having my blog shut down as has happened to others. However I will upload some samples and can send you a link to d/l the song or album if you're interested.I tried to check out the Wild Frontier song you recommended, but couldn't find it.
YouTube doesn't seem to think they exist and 7wishesmusic.wordpress.com just had images
I'm into the more straight hard rock/hair metal/sleaze/heavy metal sound.
Can pass on any AOR, and also on all the AC/DC clones.
If you come across anything that might suit, I'd love for you to send me some links, thanks
Can do, I'll PM you some stuff. Cheers.

Great read Juz, some more info on Wild Frontier. They change their name to Gellyfish, not Beatles influenced band with similar name Jellyfish. And released one cd.
Thanks for the info Andrew, I'll investigate. Cheers.

Underwhelming sums this album up perfectly. "Energized"?? That song sucked the energy right out of me - terrible! A few good / average tracks and this has their signature sound all over it, but it's just a boring record. One of the best and most frustrating bands in history.
-
I'm a bit confused, don't know if I like this or not. I loved the first song 'Too Many Gods', thought 'Mr Heartache' was good but the third one only average.
I don't like ELO (though they had their moments) or Jeff Lynne. Maybe it's creeping under my skin, the ELO influences.
I have to listen to the whole album to make up my mind.
On a side note, I think the new Bryan Adams disc is a major disappointment 'cause of the Jeff Lynne factor.
The new Bryan Adams is crap . It's got a couple of good tracks, but basically it sounds like a Jeff Lynne solo album and not a very good one at that. Also, 9 tracks, 25 minutes (with 4 acoustic versions of some of the same songs) to bulk it out isn't really the way to go in these days of diminishing CD sales.
25 minutes!!! Seriously??? Wow that is one short disc. Love Bryan Adams of the 80s and early 90s - anything he did since is total shit IMO and I don't even bother trying his albums anymore. As for this Space Cat Gods thing - count me in as being excited! I think refreshing is the word I would use. You may not have picked it but I do quite like a bit of classic 10cc - not usually my sort of band especially their art-rock side of things but man can that guy sing!
-
I like it. Great vocals. Chorus doesn't blow you away but pretty good stuff! (And not soft)
-
Call of the Wild sound is typical pub rock .
Their only cd was produced by Geordie Leech and Pete Welles of Rose Tattoo fame.
Will have Call of the Wild on the blog very soon. I have 2 CDs from them. Pretty standard pub rock with ACDC influences.

Dave Leslie of Baby Animals is only helping out the Dead Daises while the guitarist recovering his injury.
"Body Heat" was on AOR Heaven remastered version of "Nightstreet" by Roxus.
There was only a demo tape before two cds by Cyclone Tracy.
Yeah actually I have that demo tspe and will feature it on the blog sometime...got a few other goodies first.
The Roxus reissue is essential IMO.
-
Actually, Southern Sons never did it for me. Same with Kings Of The Sun.
Remember a cool BB Steal song from, ages ago. Heartbeat Away I think
Also a very cool song by Cattletruck - Rain
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sX4WRBRWncM
Of the rest you mentioned - Pseudo Echo is a massive omission on my part.
Race is an AMAZING disc.
Remember seeing them off Bell Street in some little club just because we had nothing to do and they came out and rocked hard and kicked my ass.
They are playing the Burvale Hotel, just up the road from me, but I doubt they'll play much off the CD any more. More like Kiss who play only their older hits that the bigger fan base knows.
Not sure if I'll be overseas or not, but if not I may try and make it anyway.
Interesting fact.
Brian Canham released a solo CD under the band name "Brill" which I bought, and it pretty good.
10 years later I got to know my kids music teacher at their primary school, named Darren Downs.
Turns out he sung on that CD (he freaked out when I pulled it when he was at my place) and sure enough he was there in the credits.
Apparently one night he was playing in his band and Brian was there and liked what he heard and asked him to come down to the studio and record.
Cool story.
Another band who had a great song were Stand - Somebody's Waiting.
Saw them when they supported Mike Tramp when he was living here and then when they finished their set would go on and become hos backing band.
Stand...I forgot all about them. That was a good disc!
-
I know it's an innocent forget (it must be), but you forgot Southern Sons! Their second album is arguably one of the best out of Australia. Also worthy of mention is Empire (particularly their debut). My favorites in no particular order
Candy Harlots - Five Wicked Ways
Roxus - Nighstreet
DeMont - Body Language
Choirboys
Rick Springfield
1927 - ...ish (not hard rock)
Another few musts that are not on that list;
BB Steal - debut (the second best Aussie CD ever!!!)
Mr Scary (very nice album; better late than never)
Rick Price - debut (Splendid AOR)
Psuedo Echo - 'Race' (great AOR)
Ragdoll (very good current band)
De La Cruz (great stuff)
Safire (very over-rated and really not one of my faves, but definitely worthy of mention over most that list!)
Devils In Heaven (Could have been the best of them all if they released more than just the two amazing singles - 5 songs in total)
Shotgun Alley (Australia/NZ band... but either way, they were excellent)
White Widdow (undoubtedly placed themselves in the Aussie hall of fame with their 3 albums so far)
Ice Tiger (kind of like DeMont and Safire; over-rated, but solid with 2 amazing songs)
Great list! Some essential Aussie releases there mate.
-
My favorites in no particular order
Candy Harlots - Five Wicked Ways
Roxus - Nighstreet
DeMont - Body Language
Choirboys - Evolver (Also S/T, Midnight Sun and Big Bad Noise)
Rose Tattoo - Scared For Life
Rick Springfield - Rock Of Life - Can't recommend this enough - great hard rock
1927 - ...ish (not hard rock)
The Angels - Howling
The Poor - Who Cares
Skyhooks - anything, but Latest & Greatest is your best bet if you've never heard of them
Cold Chisel - anything, but a greatest hits is your best bet if you've never heard of them, or Twentieth Century just for Flame Trees and Saturday Night
Dragon - Body And The Beat
Uncanny X-men - Cos Life Hurts
The Screaming Jets - I'd do a greatest hits - good songs are really good, others average
Little River Band - just do a greatest hits
Painters & Dockers
The Hard Ons
Mondo Rock
Also saw The Dead Daisies last night supporting Kiss. John Corabi now singing for them, having replaced Jon Stevens. Apparently an Aussie band, which is pretty international now. I think the only Aussie left is maybe a guitarist who is from Baby Animals.
Anyway, they sounded good - never heard them before, but the music was solid.
Nice list! I think Rick Springfield and Uncanny Xmen are overlooked - both excellent IMO. In fact I heard 'Don't Talk to Strangers' playing today - love that song!
-
Yeah it will be good. Im no HUGE fan but they are still the best live show I've seen. Have fun!
-
The Cyclone Tracy track didn't make it on either their two cds.
Yeah I found it strange that Cyclone Tracy took until '96 and '98 to release CDs - unless there was something else before these?
-
Nice one, mate. Very cool looking site. I just left a pointless kind of comment; just saying I owned albums from pretty much half of the bands on that compilation. Not one still resides in my collection, lol. Not a fan of any of those ones.
Thanks Geoff. You didn't like Wrecking Crew? Actually that doesn't surprise me much, but I thought they were a great band.
