  1. I hate these guys, but credit where it's due - 'Hard to handle' was great.

That's because it wasn't their song.

Yeah, to be honest that was news to me when I saw it in those above posts... but at least it makes sense now.

That was news to me too. My favorite song from them is that cover as well haha. It's that prechorus "rap" and brief-worded chorus that makes it unique...if my memory serves me correct.

  2. For me, "power metal" goes back to the 80s and bands like Metal Church, Armored Saint, Vicious Rumors, Helstar, etc. -- although I didn't mind the Helloween-ish Euro "power metal" brigade that came along during the 90s (i.e. HammerFall, Iron Savior, Stratovarius, yadda yadda yadda) at first, the problem with that scene is that even in the case of the front runner bands, most of them had a great debut but then started spinning their wheels and keep making the same album over and over again. The second and third tier bands (Heavenly, Metalium, Wizard, etc.) are mainly just clones of the clones. I haven't come across a "new" power metal band that has really excited me in quite a while.

Never got into the symphonic power metal stuff much at all -- Rhapsody are just OK, and what little I've heard of the other bands in that scene are just too fruity, not enough "grit" for me if you know what I mean.

    Viking/Folk/Pirate metal? Nahh, too goofy.

bro, i think you're wrong in some of your comments here....hammerfall came in late 90's from a shitty label back then(their success didn't make them leaders for anything)... there were way too many underground power metal acts in germany/US before them. so they were not the leaders in anything(ahaha, iron savior's joke was another one trick of kai to make some more money out of the fans...what was the reason for them while he had gamma ray playing the same thing all the time).....and skylark's great debut cd came also the same time as rhapsody's first demo which was also good one...but skylark's one was better, but yet rhapsody took all the fame...ah well....

also you're wrong about wizard, wizard where wayyyyyy older than hammerfall and made some great stuff in the manowar tradition....their first demotape which i have original came back in 91....it's not their fault if they didn't have a label or enough money back then to record their first cd which came 4 years later....

I recall Skylark's debut CD well. It's been a while since I listened to it. Great ideas, I was just having trouble getting past the thick Italian accent and I even think they were using a drum machine. :D

  3. i prefer my old iced earth....before barlow....

The Barlow-less NIGHT OF THE STORMRIDER ranks pretty high with me, that's a great album. The debut is a decent listen as well, even though the vocalist on that one left a little to be desired (he sounded like David Wayne of Metal Church...with a bad head cold!).

Though my fave I.E. album overall is still SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES, some of Barlow's best vocal work is on his first album with them, BURNT OFFERINGS... dunno why Schaffer seems to hate that album so much... it's their darkest, nastiest record all around!

I don't understand either why he puts his own masterpiece down, Freddy. Burnt Offerings is a gem, a fluke (in a very good way)...it's a visual paragon. Not only does it have technical prowess, filled with unorthodox arrangements...it is also very artistic because it conjures up so many powerful visuals & an atmosphere of darkness, hypocrisy, and hell+fire+brimstone. What I like about it so much is that I can feel sincere anger and emotion in the writing. It feels like...he was being absolutely "TRUE" to himself!!

  4. Greetings and Blessings, everybody! I'm new here as well. You can say I've been a metal guy for over twenty years and just thinking about that right now reminds me of how old I am. :P I enjoy and get highs from the whole spectrum of melodic metal...from AOR to Black Metal. It's hard to claim favorites but I can tell you right now I'm quite fond of high soaring vocals running over double bass drums and fluid guitar movements. :o) Oh but how I love acoustic guitar too heheh.

Anyhows I am here to share thoughts, want lists, and to trade/sell collectibles definitely!

Times are tough right now so I hope everyone the best.

    Sad News

    Current mood: sad

    Category: Music

    ALLENTOWN , PENNSYLVANIA

It is with deep sadness and regret that we announce the passing of Shadow Gallery vocalist, Michael A. Baker. Mike suffered a heart attack, Wednesday afternoon, October 29th, 2008. He was 45 years old. Mike was a founding member of Shadow Gallery and for the past 16 years, helped shape the sound of the band with his magical voice. Additionally, he made many appearances on rock records around the world. Those who knew him best were moved by his gentle spirit, sincere kindness , fun nature and passion for both music and sports. He was a warrior in the studio, a true professional. Mike was our friend, our singer and our brother. We loved him and will miss him enormously, but he will always be remembered in our hearts and through his music. "

I am in such shock. R.I.P. Mike. You will be sorely missed. :crying:

I remember messaging with him and the rest of the band on their Gallery Of Shadows forum. What a class act. Damn. Taken way before his time.

His gentle spirit showed through his voice. So calm and soothing, yet with such presence.

My prayer has gone out to his spirit.

  6. i have a couple of sealed copies for trade....

Do you really?? This is the first time I've heard of someone having more than one copy, but not only that, SEALED too! :D

ahahaha, you're right. it's not sealed. i should have written unplayed. i usually get my cds, even new ones, without jewel cases, so obviously one had to open them in order to send them to me..... so i have 3 copies, my personal one and 2 unplayed ones but definately not sealed.....

I understand, when I worked in mailorder distro, nearly all of the CD's were unsealed...they were just "new" and unplayed. :) Imports!

What if I traded you an mp3 of something for an mp3 of "Not Falling?! :D

  7. saviour machine is my alltime favorite 90's band. their democd and the first bunch of their cds are my absolute fave ones. i saw them in germany when they played with veni domine and soul cages and i still have nice memories to remember....needless to write that their revelations/rarities 4cd box is a monster! lots of unreleased and bootleg stuff....even moments where eric is completely out of key are included there....a must for a SM fan....their 20 minute opus "revelation" from their demo cd are some of the best 20 minutes ever recorded.... B)

Man you were able to see Saviour Machine with Veni Domine, what a combo! :D That's a good team-up because both bands play at a matching tempo. Saviour Machine song titles are also so very rooted in Scripture. Completely out of key yeah, not a good experience to have the record playing in the car if you've had girlfriends with perfect pitch who would complain. :P

  8. Their cover of "Don't Fear the Reaper" Is on their "Evil Star" Album... Pretty good cover too..... :headbanger:

I really dig this cover too. It's like drenching the original tune with metal riffage. It's dark...and atmospheric in a way. Can be spine-tingling!

  9. Generally, I find anything with the "-core" suffix is to be avoided like an explosive device. :gone:

(Lone exception: old school '80s hardcore)

My thoughts exactly. If it has the extension "-core" at the end, it's poison for most people into the whole spectrum of melodic metal subgenres. I'm serious!

  10. I don't know if there has been a post about VIRGIN STEELE before if so sorry if not cool Hey how many you HHers are into this highly under appeciated Heavy Metal band? These guys rock and should be in the tops of the Heavy Metal genre! Any comments, opinions of this band?

I would agree they are quite overlooked. Not only that, they have a really stellar band name. :) As well as one kick-ass album title, "Noble Savage." !!!

  11. Threshold- Dead Rekoning ( their last album) is Brilliant. Buy that right away.

I'm gonna check into that Sargent Fury now knowing Mac sings on it.

Their album "Hypothetical" is a great start as well. Chunky metallic sound yet incorporation of classy piano passages and strong, clear vocals. The "Keep My Head" track makes me think of "easy listening." Diverse!

  12. Saw IE last night in woosta, great show and barlow was in top form...any one else have the pleasure to see them on this tour

I wish I had the pleasure of seeing them on tour in support of the Burnt Offerings record.. well over a decade ago. :o)

  13. Anybody out here thinking about going?

EXXPLORER will be playing as well!

I don't know how much fun I'll be having due to my wife's interest in going :crying:

That sounds like it was a cool gig, to have Exxplorer open for them? We're not so lucky here on the west coast with the opening acts...they can tend to be on the nu metal side. :P

  14. Even though I'd rather Kiske go back to the Helloween style Metal that made him famous, I do have to admit that the debut Place Vendome was pretty damn good AOR, and this is coming from a guy that don't listen to to much AOR.

When I think of Michael I tend to think of his soaring high vocals over double bass drums...so it was a surprise for me when I first heard Place Vendome. But nonetheless, it shows how versatile he can be. The conviction he brings from that power metal voice adds quite a punch to the AOR. I didn't complain. :D

  15. I <cough> downloaded the new studio album from a Christian power prog band called Jeremy called "Quo vadis, Domine". This has huge production, huge hooks, awesome guitars, and is the same vibe as Balance of Power or maybe Rob Rock... these guys are great! One problem... i cant understand a single thing! 95% of the singing is in KOrean. Does anyone know if they have any English albums??

I cant seem to find any info on the net about them, even though they have been around for about 10 years with a load of releases.

Here's some videos for you to watch:

    Tears

    ?

    Heaven Or Hell

    6th Injustice

    Gambler

    Destroyer

    Edge On The History

Now what are they singing about?!

I'm not sure myself...but man they are ear candy!!

  16. Hmm I had no idea where to open that thread. I need more info about Kidd Robin. I have the cd but there's no info about the members names or the origin of the band. Is there any guy knows something more?

    Thanks in advance.

Ooooh I know of them! Love that record, but never got the chance to own it. It has the looong title that I can never remember...about the return of the dinosaur monster, something to that effect. :o) I truly truly miss the track "Not Falling" !! Beautiful.
