Excellent 'new' song with Giant.

From MelodicRock Classics:

The arrival of any new VAN STEPHENSON music is met with huge anticipation. This release is just a little different from the norm, but no less exciting or musically brilliant.

This is Van Stephenson, but with a little help from his friends.

As most will be aware, over the course of the last couple of years, I have been archiving Van's vast collection of unreleased songs and demos. There are more than 500, covering all styles from 70s singer/songwriter, 80s AOR and pop to 90s country…and then some.

The ultimate goal is to pay tribute to Van with some form of all-inclusive box set/s. During the course of sorting the archives into categories, a certain number of tracks were found to feature vocalists other than Van. I decided that the box sets should be dedicated to just Van with his songs, so the idea came to put together a separate release that featured these songs - Van's own or co-written demos and the various vocalists used on those original sessions.

Hence the title – 'Same Pen, Different Voices'.

And while Van's voice may be absent from this release – his spirit and his style are all over it, with some absolute melodic classics about to be launched. This is a double disc of lost Van Stephenson tunes written with many of his regular writing partners such as Dave Innis, Sam Lorber, Robert White Johnson, Bob Farrell and Dave Robbins.

But that isn't all. Lost among the hundreds of songs were a set of session tracks written with Dann Huff for the classic Giant 'Time To Burn' album. One of those songs has already been featured on the 'Van's Versions' release ('Get Over It'), but I'm excited to announce the others will all make their debut on this release and they all feature the voice of Dann Huff himself.

Three of these tracks have never been released before and I must thank Dann for his co-operation in this release and allowing the tracks to finally see the light of day.

They may have been lost for 30 years, but they are magnificent!

It doesn't stop there – there is a trilogy of songs co-written with Jaime Kyle (previously released), two featuring vocalist Robert White Johnson and another featuring TJ Seals, son of Dan Seals.

Sadly, we couldn't ask Van himself about the details behind these songs, so many are still missing credits and even the vocalists themselves are unknown in many cases. I have managed to fill in the details behind some of them thanks to the co-writers, but to all those that are featured on the songs – thank you for adding your talents to Van's legacy and please know that the performances delivered some 20-30 years ago now live on today and sound as good as ever.

Disc 1 is all male lead vocals; Disc 2 is mostly female lead vocals.

Van Stephenson – Same Pen, Different Voices 2CD set will be released by MelodicRock Classics July 26.

The awesome cover art is the brainchild of Arnaud Leger.

Good tune!  Kudos to Andrew and others involved.  It's great to have an opportunity to hear tracks like this that otherwise might never have seen the light of day for fans to enjoy.

This previously unreleased Giant song is glorious. I've listened to it 5 times on repeat and realized how great Giant were in their heyday (ie 2 first albums).

An unreleased demo that is better than 95% of the music produced today!

Go figure.

Correction: Maybe the word realize is the wrong one. I knew they were great in the first place but this just cemented my belief (and maybe others).

:)

    • Don't get me wrong. If AI can produce great music, I'll listen to it. And if people can enjoy playing with it, good for them, have fun. Who knows where AI will go. If it can spit actual facts rather than the shit we are fed today, then why not? Just today I did some research on the 'island of plastic' in the Pacific that's '3 times the size of France' I was wondering why I'd never seen satellite pics of this island. Never thought it was as big as they said, but if it's 110th the size, should be easily visible. Turns out there is no island at all. Also, more recycling can only reduce plastics in the oceans by about 20% max as 85% of the heavy plastics in the oceans are from the fishing industry. Also, 9% of micro plastics are from the dust created from car tyre wear and a whopping 40% of them come from..... Paint deteriorating and peeling! Hard to help the world when humans constantly lie and mislead us. So bring on AI I guess. Sorry, that turned into a bit of a rant...
    • Yeah, I certainly don't think the stuff we're doing on Suno is the future of music, it's just a very enjoyable hobby. I do think though, that AI is gonna be involved heavily in the future when it comes to all aspects of life. I don't think we're gonna see AI completely take over the music industry, but it will be used to enhance it. You could be the greatest technically skilled guitarist, pianist, vocalist, songwriter or whatever, but it's coming up with the melody that's the hardest part and there's no amount of training or practice that can help you with that. There are some very talented musicians that can inherently create melodies, but I think there are more incredibly talented musos that can't. That's where I think the value will be in this for a lot of musicians.    I guess it's a bit like when electronic music first appeared, using computers and synthesisers was considered weird and not really music. Electronic music didn't take over the industry, it just became a part of it. You're always gonna have real people playing instruments, singing, writing and creating melodies.    The bigger question is, will AI be used in the future to make strategic military decisions?, if it's not already. I'm fully expecting some "Skynet" shit down the track.
    • Not sure about when your credits reset, but I would assume it's on the date that you subscribed.  If you do find yourself having withdrawals, you can buy extra credits ranging from $4 for 500 to $30 for 4000. I've noticed the report button, but never used it. If I come across issues like the ones mentioned in the bug option, then I'll just trash them immediately, rather than fuck around with reporting them. Still haven't checked out Audacity yet. I'll try to over the weekend. It sounds pretty cool.
    • Aaaaaand that's a wrap on this year's drive! It raised 84% of goal of covering the out-of-pocket expenses for the year, so thank you everyone! I'll leave the donation buttons up for a little bit, in case there were any people who missed. -Dan

    • btw @Darkstone, have you ever noticed, known about, or used the Report feature? On the bottom of the three buttons on the right of a song. You click on it and then the Bug symbol and you can select low audio quality, doesn't follow lyrics, doesn't follow style instructions, poor structure or other, all with a box to tick. Bloody hell, wish I'd known about this four months ago. So many songs I'd have loved to pin, hopefully in the pursuit of a better product.  Used all my credits for the month, lol. Still got 15 days to go until a reset, I think. Sadness.
    • Yeah, good band, always reliable for a few keepers on their albums. Favourites on the new one are Doomsday, The Masqueradem Point Of No Return and Where Do We Stand.
    • My memory is so incredibly shit, but do you keep up with all the albums? One in particular - I think it was Byte The Bullet... possibly Temple Of Lies. But one of them has a bunch of pretty cool tunes on it.  I agree, though, the new song is very promising. The old Bonfire is long gone, but the new stuff's had it's moments.
