What was happening in hard rock in 1996? Not much really. Below is a graphic of some of the popular releases from the year. Choose one plus your favourite track from that album.

Just when I thought it was over, I picked up the "ten" debut.

I had a "Now & Then" sampler disc featuring "Cool Blonde Angel" by "Gary Hughes" and I knew "Vinny Burns" from "Dare", so when I saw this I thought I'd take a chance.

I'll never forget my first listen with a mate of mine who was also into this stuff.

We were awestruck.

I know Gary Hughes and ten cop a bit of shit these days, but they carried "the torch" during the darkest days of our music.

Favourite track is "The Loneliest Place in the World".

One of the best power ballads ever, no question, end of.

Wow, couple more than I expected to choose from there. Gotta go with Tower City and probably 'Talking to Sarah,' but I absolutely love that album despite shonky production.

The Ten album is awesome too. Nelson rounds out a very respectable top 3.

truly in the wilderness. Probably the worst year for melodic rock.

Tower City is good.

even that Gòtthard is pretty average.

Shout out to Matchbox 20 - I love that album and it would probably sneak top 5 in a weak year

Agreed...there wasn't much released that year for fans of the genre, especially with bands like Leppard and Crown of Thorns putting out disappointing albums.  Of the choices in the montage my pick would be Ten, just slightly over Tower City and Helloween

You know what, I'm going with Trans Siberian Orchestra. Only cause I play it more than the others, even if that is only for a couple of weeks every year. And the best track is of course Christmas Eve Sarajevo, one of the greatest instrumentals.

Never heard some of the albums there but from the ones I have, I guess Tower City.

Song - Little bit of fire.

What haven't you heard?

From the top row left to right:

Tool, Def Leppard, Stone Temple Pilots, Korn.

Local H, Crown of Thorns, Gotthard, King's X.

Nelson, Ten, Thunder, Tower City.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Deep Purple, Sublime, ZZ Top.

Tool are like a heavy proggy band. I quite enjoy them but have to be in the mood.

Korn are nu-metal. I'm not a big fan but they were huge in the late 90s to mid 00s.

King's X are a power trio who play hard rock with strong vocal harmonies. I love them.

Local H are a post-grunge band. A couple of decent songs, but mostly shit.

Wow. No love for arguably Gotthard's best album?

So many great songs, gonna have to go with "Lay Down the Law!"

I actually share your surprise that there is very little love for Gotthard as I thought they'd be the popular pick.

BUT! Any maniac arguing that it's their best album needs to understand that 'Dial Hard' was not their debut, nor was 'Open' the last album they ever recorded. Because it's probably the best of those three, but that's where it ends. In.

My opinion, of course.

I personally think the album is bog average with two great songs and a bunch of fillers. 'Let it be' and 'In the name' are two if the finer songs in Gotthard's discography. The rest? Pass. :(

In my.

Opinion, of course.

Plenty of love here from me and it's easily my #2, but I'm trying and failing to stick to the strict terms and conditions imposed by Auslander in his OP's.
