Main site wonkiness and changes

Recommended Posts

Just a heads up that you may see some wonkiness over on the main site over the next month. eBay suddenly announced 2 days ago that it is killing off many of its advertising/affiliate tools by the end of this month, including those that I use on the site. So I'm doing a bit of scramble to come up with functional alternatives, some of which necessitate me changing up the page design somewhat.

The eBay affiliate money is important, as it's the only way I can bridge the gap between the annual donation drive (which I delayed this year due to COVID-19) and my actual out-of-pocket costs, which amount to several thousand dollars per year. It matters, so I have to find a way to keep it up and running.

Most companies give you several months notice and time to transition, but eBay has a history of being fucksticks and treating their affiliates like dogshit, so this really doesn't surprise me at all.

Unfortunately it comes at absolutely the worst time with respect to a busy period at my day job and my preparing to be off work for elective surgery next month, so things may occasionally get left in a partially-completed state, or some pages might not completely match others, etc.

In the long run, this is actually a good thing in that it's forcing me to look at code/markup that hasn't substantially changed in 15+ years, and I'm taking this as an opportunity to make some elements more responsive (mobile-friendly).

Note: This is NOT a total site redesign. I have neither the funds nor the time for that. This is a quick and dirty fix. The functionality and layout will remain substantially the same, but may look a bit different in places.

Hopefully at the end of it, there's a site that's at least a bit more useful on tablets and phones.

Thanks.

  • My Little Pony

You're still doing the donation drive this year, right?

Undetermined at this time. I know a lot of people are still either out of work or having reduced hours, etc., so they've got more important things to focus on with respect to their money, only exacerbated by the idiotic carnage and destruction of the last week.

I may do it later in the year or just suck it up and hold off until March of 2021 if things don't improve on a widespread basis.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok, so I made the tweaks live on the main site tonight. Please let me know if there's anything not working properly. I will give it a few weeks to refine and then carry them over to Brutal Metal. At some point in the next year I plan to completely overhaul the semi-abandoned Heaven's Metal to utilize the updated layouts.

When you  click the A-Z on the main site, every letter you click takes you to 'A' ;)

The main site is still a bit wonky when pulling it up on my cellphone. Instead of the 2 columns for each letter it's now one loooooooooong column of artists that does show where the column separation should be about halfway down, so if I'm scrolling to find an artist it's taking a while to get through everything.

Actually, that is a deliberate change. It's different from the way it was in the past, but you're actually supposed to reflow/reorganize a page's content for smaller screen sizes rather than making people zoom in or scroll sideways. It's more complicated than that, but the new design is "acceptable" in the eyes of the Great God Google, whereas the old design was unacceptable.

Question for those who use the main site primarily on mobile devices, would it be better if the main letter pages were set up in collapsible table format with a search bar that filtered inputs, like this page does:

https://heavyharmonies.com/cgi-bin/coversearch.cgi

I still need to refine the pages that use that table+filter construct, as I'm still not 100% happy with the way it works on smaller window sizes.

I for one love the change. But I rarely use with my mobile, mostly the desktop.

I think it's easier to find what band I'm looking for now. Spread out and great spacing. Perfecto Mundo.

I didnt know about any of this shit of course, I just tried going on to search a few bands, the 1st 4 times I went in from the link on this message board, it kept telling me server is not responding, so I tried on my phone, it told me server was timed out, so I googled the band Crash Diet, then clicked on the HH link, that took me to it, but then when I typed in the band to search, it kicked me back to the server in timed out screen, what the fizuck? sheeeeiiiittt! Well, I've been dealing with some craziness at work, and in addition I'm trying to wrap several things up as I'm going into the hospital for surgery on July 13, and will be out of commission for several weeks, so things are just chaotic.

Well hope your surgery goes well, make sure you take your laptop, so we have an E-Line to our Metal savior, who will be moderating in your absence?  Oh and also, I was noticing in my profile, I have an empty category, how can I go about achieving some warning points? can we purchase them? If I call G-Off's a dumb kangaroo fucking homo, or if I say something about myself like, all Gooks are good at math, and drive like shit, dental floss blindfolds them so lets eradicate them, or their all Wok using little nip mother fuckers, is that good enough to get hooked up with some warning points? if anyone reading this has received some warning points, could you give me a few tips on getting some? thanx Dan, hope your surgery is awesome, and there's all sorts of hot ass nurses giving you sponge baths, and wearing loose fitting scrubs, so when they bend down to take your blood, their cleavage is falling all over, it always makes my hospital stays very enjoyable, really though, hope shit goes well buddy.

    • This is hilarious, my dads older brother, my uncle Mike, retired at the beginning of 2019, his wife my aunt died in 1990, all he's done is work and make mega money, all my cousins are grown up, and I guess he got bored and at 64 he figured ya cant take it when you go, so he announced he was getting married, almost a month b4 he retired, he didn't mention she was 22, then they went out to get his retirement gift, he also wanted a car, after 3 days of nobody hearing from them, they finally showed up in his new retirement gift to himself, a 2019 AM. I got hysterical cause I thought he got an AM Skyfall, but it wasn't, it was just their baseline model.   AM is not my uncles style in any way shape or form, it was very bizarre and I wish I could've taken a crack at the step aunt b4 he sent her packing, anyways during the lock-down sometime, Mike showed up to check on me, and talk about missing my dad, and when he went to leave it dawned on me, I said Mike, what the fuck? where the fuck is your little low IQ bimbo wife, he told me he had a couple bouts of buyers remorse, and he got rid of her, and traded the AM in for a 2020 Silverado, I only got to drive the AM for about 10 minutes, and I wasn't anywhere near a long stretch of empty road, but I have drove his new truck, and personally, if I was just trying to get pussy, of course id take the AM, but other then that, the Silverado is fucking amazing, and I'd take it in a second, the AM is really not that cool after the novelty wears off, I'll stick to my Jeep.    He finally told me what it boiled down to, as far as the cars go anyways, not the hot little big mouthed bimbo, so the Silverado is as much to repair as that AM would've been, possibly more expensive, AM parts aren't available at Autozone, when he called around he could only find 2 mechanics in the state that would even consider working on the AM, so anytime it needed to be serviced, he'd have had to go to Vegas to do it, FUCK THAT! vehicle maintenance is an absolute deal breaker and it boggles my brain when I see just how ignored it is in the process of people purchasing vehicles, and when you bring it up, people blow you off like your a fucking idiot, and like cars don't need maintenance, its so important, I'm sure you all know, but its just something that floors me.
    • Damn... terrible news. Metal Church's recent output with Mike has been tremendous... R.I.P.
    • Oh wow, sad and surprising news, only 55 years old too.  Blessing In Disguise and Hanging in the Balance are two of my all-time favorite metal albums.  RIP Mike
    • Oh damn, I have really enjoyed their recent stuff. Thoughts with his loved ones. Was he ill? How did he die?
    • How to make Turbo Lover even better than it already was...
    • On the latest episode of the 80's Glam Metalcast episode, host Metal Mike talks to Heavens Edge guitarist Reggie Wu. He reveals what the band has been up to in recent years and revisits their classic self-titled debut from 1990. Wu also shares some memories and thoughts on Cinderella guitarist Jeff LaBar, who recently passed away. On what the band has been up to and a big future announcement  Wu: "For shows - we were supposed to do M3 this year, but one of the guys got sick and we had to cancel. We just committed to Monsters On The Mountain in Tennessee in October. I love the guys in this band, we are all like brothers. Whenever we get together, we just pick up right where we left off. We also have some big news that I can’t share right now. Hopefully we will be able announce it within the next couple weeks. Things are moving along. At this point we’re just having fun with it. Me and Mark are writing songs, and the pressure is just off. We aren’t trying to be rock stars anymore. There’s talks to do an album....and that could be the news that’s coming soon. We are just in talks and I really can’t get into it."  On the fall of the band when grunge came Wu: "It was nuts. The climb to get the record deal was spectacular. Right out of the box, we were selling out wherever we would play. Those three years before we got signed were unbelievable. Then the label dropped us and the ride down was brutal. Places that we used to play that were packed, were now a quarter full. It was a big time blow to the ego. When Heavens Edge split, me Dave and George still loved playing together. We started a band called American Pie with a new singer. We did the whole flannel shirt and grunge thing. It just wasn’t true and people could see it though it. It just didn’t work and we called it a day. We were forced to find another life, and in many ways that was a Godsend. I love my family and that’s what it’s all about." On the passing of Jeff LaBar  Wu: "Me and Jeff go way back. We both auditioned for Cinderella at the time when their label wanted them to replace their drummer and guitarist. Being the local guys we both went. In an interview, Jeff broke my balls because I sat right in front of him during his audition! He totally fit the bill so much better than I did. I was in my Yngwie Malmsteen phase. We played 'Nobody’s Fool' and I’m just shredding over it and it didn’t fit. Jeff was just a monster on stage, a monster guitar player, and just a great guy. I’m crushed over his death. All of us in Heavens Edge are devastated because they were the first Philly band in our genre that made it big. We all were rooting for them. It was awesome watching them skyrocket."
    • This sucks....excellent singer....RIP   Sadly, Metal Church vocalist Mike Howe is no longer with us. The band has issued the following statement:  "It is with our deepest regrets that we must announce the passing of our brother, our friend and true legend of heavy metal music. Mike Howe passed away this morning at his home in Eureka, California. We are devastated and at a loss for words. Please respect our privacy and the Howe family’s privacy during this most difficult time." Mike Howe was the singer of Metal Church from 1998 - 1996, and again from 2015 - 2021.
    • Shit! You're right mate. My bad.
    • The whole 'defund the police' thing is a crock of shit....I get why marginalized communities want to see change in the way the police do their jobs but they need to drop the DTP crap as it is a stupid slogan/idea....say you want those policing your community to better represent you ( not all white cops policing an all black neighborhood)....say you want better training for the cops when they interact with you (all communities)...say you want some calls to 911 such as when people are having an emotional breakdown of some sort taken by social workers ( although this one will probably get a few of those social workers stabbed or shot).....most people just hear DTP and freak out at the consequences of such an action and to be clear DTP will never happen so they should just shut up about it.....
