Most valuable thing learned from a song?

Recommended Posts

Sometimes a shadow dark and cold
Lays like a mist across the road
But be encouraged by the sight
Where there's a shadow, there's a light

Sometimes it's good to look back down
We've come so far - we've gained such ground
But joy is not in where we've been
Joy is who's waiting at the end

-Road to Zion, Petra

What's your favorite??

No, and this isn't about Petra. It's about whatever song has taught you something. I just chose Petra, because those are priceless lyrics.

Hell's Gates by Wrathchild Amrerica

When you see me comin'
and you hear my cry
you see the look of fear
and the chill in my eye

you play the killers game, all the faces have no names
he'll come to hunt you out and he'll live to cut you down
now your god can't help you, you are on your own
he'll drag you through the fiery gates to bow before his throne

Satan waits
at hells gates
Desecrate
pain, torture, hate

Destruction lies far down below
Hells gates are filled with fire
Love has no hidden meaning
You're cursed and damned a liar

Satan waits
at hells gates
Desecrate
pain, torture, hate

Live in hatred die in grief
Challenging my disbelief
Burning flames are boiling my brain
Lucifer inflicting the pain

Wretched life that didn't matter
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
You lie decaying your final chapter
Your misused soul lies in his clutch

You got nowhere to run got nowhere to hide
There's turmoil all around you like
The coming of the tide
Now you can't help but wonder
About your after life
When you wake up dead
Horns or halo, burn or fly

Live in hatred die in grief
Challenging my disbelief
Burning flames are boiling my brain
Lucifer inflicting the pain

Okay I'm gona get stufff, but I love Jesus so much

We Need Jesus- Petra

When will the world
See that we need Jesus?
If we open our eyes
We will all realize
That He loves us
When will the world
See that we need Jesus?
When our hearts are as one
And believe that He's the Son of our God

The Lord is our God
And we shall never want
The Lord is our God
And we shall live forever
When we share the love of Jesus
See each other as He sees us
Then His love will see us through
His love will see us through

When will the world
See that we need Jesus?
When sister and brother
Love one another as one
When will the world
See that we need Jesus?
Will we ever understand
Jesus is the Son of man?
We must live in the shadow of His love

When will the world
See that we need Jesus?
If we open our eyes
We will all realize
That He loves us
When will the world
See that we need Jesus?
When our hearts are as one
And believe that He's the Son of our God

When will the world
See that we need Jesus?
When sister and brother
Love one another as one
When will the world
See that we need Jesus?
Will we ever understand
Jesus is the Son of man?
We must live in the shadow of His love

Petra Fools Gold

Some say this life is only foolishness
No waiting pot of gold in the faith that I possess
But the treasures of this life will slowly turn to dust
And this fool will find His gold in the Savior that I trust

Fool's gold it's waiting in a crown
Fool's gold in a city coming down
I'll leave the gold I can't afford
For the higher prize I'm pressing toward
I'll preach the foolish cross of Christ
And wait for my reward
Fool's gold

The wisdom of the cross is easy to receive
But only foolishness to them that don't believe
They may say that I'm a fool for the cross that I proclaim
But the gold that I must seek won't be found in earthly fame

When the crowns of gold all lay before His feet
Then the worthy Lamb of God is the treasure we will keep
Some may call me foolish some may call me odd
But I'd rather be a fool in the eyes of men
Than a fool in the eyes of God

Ha! The words I'm always sticking to-Petra just has amazing lyrics!!

Oddly enough, she's actually right, Karpetface. I always thought you were male?

Anyway, not sure I've really learned anything valuable from a song, if I'm being honest. But I learned some pretty cool things from the Steel Panther albums that I'd previous not heard before, lol. I was not aware of 'The Shocker' before...

Listening to some "Firehouse" today. The first tim I heard this song it moved me. 25 odd years later it still does. Great song and great message, although it is easier said than done.

speaking about food and learning, I remember learning what a vegemite sandwich is from a Men at Work song, though not sure how valuable that is :)

That's what my mom said! She had an Australian classmate and she brought a jar to school. My sister had me try some- it's very salty and not my favorite. But that's pretty cool!

Never have it straight out of the jar. Try a small amount on a slice of buttered toast.

    • Yep, what this guy said. 'Rock your body' gets better with every listen and 'We are gods' gets weaker with every listen - easily worst on the album for me.
    • Yeah, another person here who thinks Rock your body is decent. The chorus is really bad, but I think musically the rest of it is really good. The solo is particularly tasty, especially those opening bends Rise is the perfect outro song IMO. Oh, I'm thinking one of the highlights of the album is the solo section in Victory - the keys starting, then Dave, then ends a bit Racer Xish
    • Not unanimously, because I think "Rock Your Body" is great (total ear-worm for me) and think "We Are Gods" is the weak point of the album.
    • Drive is a top 10 ballad of all time for me. Utter perfection. Think you mean Rocknut? Mmm if I said anymore it would be by PM
    • That's why I miss out on posting on a lot of new album release threads and am always Johnny come lately. Because I wait until it's had 6 - 10 spins so I really get a good feel for it. Based on this, sometimes after a first listen I KNOW I will never like the song. But this it pretty rare. usually I can oust a couple after a few listens for specific reasons, then I let the rest drum into my brain. Rare that a lot of time goes by and I have a change of heart, but it does happen. I didn't like God Of Thunder for like 20 years, and eventually I got it lol Same with Drive by The Cars. Hated it. Was all over radio until we couldn't bare it. Then years went by and I heard it again and I could appreciate it. I remember a guy on the old Metal Edge forums ( a long time ago) - rucknut. He reckoned that he could instantly assess any song on one listen I I felt sorry for him as I think that is total crap and he missed out on a lot of music. He was very proud of his music collection and ability to listen to pretty much every song written though.
    • One of those consistently solid but never spectacular bands. Their stuff is all pretty decent, but none of it utterly essential. But a good solid listen. Similar to bands like Satrox and Domain etc. off the top of my head.
    • wes and keef are pretty much only on FB. I keep telling Wes to post on HH but he always says he doesn't have time even though he responds to nearly every post on the FB group I like the mafia group but find the discussion very frustrating - it's very immediate and move on - you never get the weeks of discussion you get on here on a subject or album.
    • it's not a perfect science and I certainly wouldn't bother doing it all the time but for example I had to do this to rank 1989 or else the top 20 would have been a tie. I also did it to rank the HEAT albums as they are all very close....to me anyway. for the last few years I've decided my tops album purely on what I've played the most. but I would never discard songs - making playlists is a mistake in my opinion. Sometimes the tracks I dislike at first end up being ones I like the best. And the 'instant' tracks wear thin after a while.  I know full well that someone is going to reply to this saying I know what I like and that never changes ever , but for me it does . For example I could have dumped Rock Your Body as it's everything I hate on first listen but hell this song is catchy and grows on me more and more and there are some little HEAT nuances I hear now which I love in that track
    • Nah if there are only 2 or 3 songs I don't care for it's a fucking great album for me. Dr. Feelgood has a couple of tracks I don't like. Hysteria has a couple as well. Appetite For Desrtuction has some very average songs for me, but also some killer tracks sometimes the amazing albums end up having tracks that might be the best songs on a lesser album but amongst the great songs they seem shitter. On the other hand, I was listiening to First Signal the other day. I picked it because every song of the 2010? album made my best of folder. All the songs are good, but only a couple of killer tracks, so overally a great album but only great, as even though every song is good and enjoyable to listen to, nothing that really wants me to make the devil sign and jump to my feet.
