Best of 2017

Recommended Posts

I've been off the forum most of the year due to work, family etc. Anyway I came for the best of 2017 lists and all there seems to be is the current best of 2017 thread in general discussion.....or have I missed it? Come on guys, I need some lists.so I can catch up on some good music!

Where's all the stats and data? ?

So far for me it's H.E.A.T, Eclipse, Confess and a few metal albums. Oh I did also pick up 1987 again (30th anniversary) only coz it's one of the best albums ever.

Lots of shockers like Steel Panther this year as well.

Please share!

As far as the formal published lists, same schedule as always: lists always get published at the end of January to mid-February. I give the guys until January 20 to get their lists to me.

Not giving anything away at this point. :)

Think I've settled on my personal top 10 for 2017.  What a year...Most releases I've bought in a year in quite some time.  I'm usually pretty selective as I know what I like and it usually only results in me buying a handful of albums in a year.  Not this year though.

1.  Midnite City - S/T - Liked every song, hits my taste perfectly and haven't been able to get enough of this album since it released.

2.  H..e.a.t - Into The Great Unknown - Like the album plenty, one or two songs that I don't care much for though that pushed it to #2

3.  Crazy Lixx - Ruff Justice - My new favorite album from this band that for me edges out New Religion.

4.  Eclipse - Monumentum - Solid album but gets a tiny bit samey in spots.  For me, a little more variety could've pushed it up on the list.

5.  Tokyo Motor Fist - S/T - Great debut that also hit my tastes perfectly.  One or two songs not doing much for me and thin production knocked it down a little but some great songs on this.

6.  Harem Scarem - United - I haven't been a fan of these guys and don't own any other releases.  However, something about this one grabbed me.  Fantastic melodic rock album top to bottom.

7.  One Desire - S/T - This album wasn't instantaneous for me but grew on me more than any other album this year.  It's one I find that I keep coming back to.

8.  Wildness - S/T - Great debut, good mix of songs and another that seems to be a grower for me.  I have to say the #5 through #8 are almost interchangeable for me.

9.  Degreed - S/T -  Another consistent album from these guys.  Shakedown might be my favorite tune this year.  I really don't like the piano ballad though and the second half falls off a little bit for me knocking this down.

10.Romeo Riot - Sing It Loud - Solid melodic rock, good variety.  It's down on the list as I don't think it really blows me away but it's definitely a solid album and enjoy listening to it.  I dare say it might be my favorite Kivel release.

Two that just missed for me were Warrant's Louder Harder Faster and Art Nation's Liberation.  I enjoyed both those albums at times this year but haven't had much desire to go back to them since filing them away.

Will be interesting to see others lists to see stuff I've missed that I might like.  A couple that have shown up on other lists I've given some time to are Confess, Pink Cream 69 and Code Red but those just haven't clicked with me enough to buy them.  I've been real close with Confess and PC69 as there are a couple tunes on each I like but they haven't won me over for some reason.

very solid top 10 although I've still not heard the RR.

I thought that with Degreed but I really like the piano ballad and second half of the album. I just love the band.

this was my top 25 a few weeks ago.

Wildness might be higher. The top 12 are probably set though but could change places to a certain degree on any given day.

degreed I feel could be higher. I play it more than Eclipse & One Desire.

will be interesting to re-visit in 6 months time to see what is still in rotation

I'm beginning to think that maybe I didn't miss too much this year after looking at the stuff above.

Confess and The Nights are both great.

There are a heap I have heard on the lists above and didn't do much for me e.g. Santa Cruz, Art Nation, Wraith, One Desire etc.

Some are OK but not great e.g. Vain, Tokyo Motor Fist, Crazy Lixx, Night Flight Orchestra etc.

Others I couldn't get into like the new Cats in Space - loved the debut but new one is just not grabbing me as much as everything sounds great.

As was mentioned, there are some similarities between many of our top 10 picks, so at first glance it can seem like only a handful of standouts.  There are a few choices (like H.E.A.T.) that didn't click for me, but I've also found a few that I hadn't heard and ended up really enjoying.  Plus the lists that Dan and the guys will be posting are bound to have some albums that no one else selected.

Do they still do sales numbers? I'd be interested to know what the top selling albums of our genre were.

Though I fear it might be the difference between selling 6000 copies and 6001 in many cases.

Listening figures on Spotify etc would also be interesting.

That would be interesting to see some of that data

Enjoyable lists so far. For the most part, it looks like a lot of similar releases popping up in most top 10s this year, with a few exceptions. Anyway, as usual, here's my 400kg long summary of the year... not quite as easy to post on the new forum, I see. Anyway, here I go;

30     .    We Came As Romans     -     Cold Like War ; this one grew and grew on me. Nice, big and heavy sound, but with good melody throughout. 'Cold like war' is a massive song, with one of my favourite choruses of the year.

29     .    Falling In Reverse     -     Coming Home ; I feel like I heard this album a million times throughout the year. It went a bit up and down in terms of enjoyment, but when it came down to it it's definitely their best and most consistent album. No bad songs, and just, like I say, very consistent. Pick on this one is the awesome 'Fuck you and all your friends.'

28     .    Coldrain     -     Fateless ; guided by an absolutely awesome opener in 'Envy,' this album is another crowd pleaser for fans of the band. They don't know how to make bad music. I still await their truly killer album, but in the mean time I'll just enjoy very good albums like this.

27     .    Spoken     -     IX ; one of the more intelligent christian bands out there, these guys seem to have all but entirely dropped any stupid religious message in their songs, and opted for actual good songs instead. Nice to see. This album isn't as good as their last, but it's still a damn fine collection of songs. 'Remember the memories' is quite delicious.

26     .    Romeo Riot     -     Sing It Loud ; this one fired out the gates. When I settled down with it it probably wasn't as amazing as initial thoughts suggested, but it's still a damn fine album. Good, simple and catchy melodic rock. And 'Cry' is ridiculously catchy.

25     .    Wildness     -     Wildness ; alternatively, this one got better with repeated listens. These guys have a real nice sound... I guess maybe a little like Vega? Maybe. But this is really nice stuff. I hope to hear many more albums from these guys. Hard to go past 'Your last romance' as one of the better songs of the year. Wonderful melodic rock.

24     .    Lionville     -     A World of Fools ; another album that seemed destined for the top 10 early on, but dropped off a bit. It's all good, nice melodic rock/AOR... but just didn't stand alongside the big guns in terms of stand out tracks. But they're a consistently good band, no doubt at all. No doubt 'Paradise' is the finest moment on this one.

23     .    Vain     -     Rolling With The Punches ; my beloved Vain delivered the goods again in 2017... easily their best output since 'Move On It.' It's not all perfect, but it's all good and it's all very authentic Vain. I've enjoyed this album through the year. 'Long gone' was probably my favourite track on this one.

22     .    H.E.A.T     -     Into The Great Unknown ; a bit of an eclectic album in terms of song quality, with stuff they don't need on here - bad sounds, instruments and silly things. When they just do what they're good at, they're marvellous. But it's a hit and miss album. Thankfully their best stuff is excellent enough to still allow them a good showing in 2017. 'Redefined' is my favourite moment on this one.

21     .    Santa Cruz     -     Bad Blood Rising ; like a few bands this year, this one doesn't quite match their previous album... but it's still a fine disc. I thought both versions of 'River Phoenix' were great.

20     .    Thousand Below     -     The Love You Let Too Close ; I kind of quietly enjoyed this one through the year without ever sharing news about it, for some reason. Hopefully someone else did and modern rock listeners got to enjoy this too. I love it. Hard to pick my favourite on this one as there are two contenders in 'Sleepless,' and 'No place like you.'

19     .    Kee of Hearts     -     Kee of Hearts ; I'm not a wild fan of Tommy Heart's voice, but this one is definitely a lot better than anything Fair Warning ever did, aided by Kee Marcello's work on guitar. It's a rather simple melodic rock album, but it works well for me. 'Mama don't cry' is a cracker of a song.

18     .    Confess     -     Haunters ; another early one which kind of slipped a bit here and there as the year went on. But undoubtedly a very fine album, for sure. 'How could I let you go' is one of the songs of the year, but apparently not on Youtube. Great step up from their last album. Good stuff.

17     .    Story of the Year     -     Wolves  ; splendidly good return album from these guys, and quite possibly my favourite from them. They haven't missed a beat in their time away. 'I swear I'm okay' is a ridiculously good song.

16     .    The Darren Phillips Project     -     Volume One ; not really a standout, but a good consistent player which has ranked high due to a good collection of fine songs. He's managed to get the best out of Sisters Doll in 'Heart Attack' and it's good to hear as much of White Widdow's Enzo Alamanzi as one can hear. I love 'Monday too. But the best song has to be the killer Blanc Faces-esque 'I believe.'

15     .    Babylon A.D.     -     Revelation Highway ; a few comments on the forum about poor sound quality on this one, but I didn't mind it. I thought this was an excellent return from these guys. Some recycled songs from their early days (just like Vain and PBF also intelligently did this year) makes this a fine album for fans of this band. Love the new version of the ever-wonderful 'Last time for love.'

14     .    Bloody Heels     -     Through Mystery ; one of the surprises of the year. I consistently called it something like a lost Silent Rage album, as the vocalist sounds like prime Jesse Damon. They have a slightly different style, to Silent Rage, but if you let this album do it's magic on you, these songs are infectious. I just found this to be a really good album, plain and simple, and I always looked forward to hearing it. 'Love may have gone' is a gem.

13     .    7th Heaven     -     Luminous ; a wonderful accomplishment, as they finally earned themselves a decent production job. And thankfully they make the most of it. I haven't completed my top songs of the year list yet, but 'If You Change Your Mind' is definitely a contender for the second spot. Another collection of fine songs from these guys.

12     .    Tales From The Porn     -     H. M. M. V ; another low flying album this year, but it's a cracker, imo. Definitely the most worthwhile thing Stevie Rachelle has done in a while. Brings back some good memories of the debut Tuff album. This album centres around the ballsier end of sleaze/glam, but for the most part is very enjoyable. In fact, nothing is poor on it. It deserves a listen by all.   Hard to go past 'Perfect Love' for the song of the album, and (lyric) video of the year.

11     .    Tokyo Motor Fist     -     Tokyo Motor Fist ; this lingered around my top 10 all year, but a couple of weaker songs in the middle and end just squeezed it outside. But it's another album I feel like I have enjoyed from the first moment of 2017. Ted and Steve Brown make an excellent combo and shine on this one. Really enjoyable album.  And I love 'Love.'

10     .    The Nights     -     The Nights ; a late arrival to my top 10, but a worthy one, imo. Lyrically, they're not fantastic and a few of the songs haven't really stuck with me, but when they're on fire there's a bit of Wigelius about them, which is a mighty good thing. I hope they stick around because I think there's a lot of potential here. It's a very nice debut. 'You belong to me tonight' is a just a beauty of a tune.

9    .   Houston    -   III ; I don't often rave about this band, but by gosh I enjoy them. I think they're great and this album is more proof of this. Great AOR / melodic rock. Hard to go past 'Amazing' as this album's finest moment.

8    .   Muna    -   About U ; this will no doubt be the most contentious item on my list, but I cannot deny my love for it. Beautiful, infection melodies and just a really, really enjoyable album to listen to. Good lyrics, and just great songs. Can't go past 'Loudpeaker' as my favourite of the bunch.

7    .   Eclipse    -   Monumentum ; the ever-consistent Eclipse strike again. Nothing one would not expect from these guys, which isn't always a bad thing. Great hard rock album. 'Killing me' is my favourite here.

6    .   Degreed    -   degreed ; another super consistent band with another super consistent album. All good, no complaints here. High quality all the way. 'Shakedown' is my pick here.

5    .   Wraith    -   Revelation ; I guess this would be my surprise of the year. A band I was familiar with a long, long time ago, but I had no idea they were still active... even less idea they were capable of something like this. Great 80's style hard rock album, with a huge nod of the head to vintage Ratt... though it's far ballsier that Ratt ever were. It's a real, really good 'un. A lot to choose from here, but I think 'Into the fire' would be favourite here.

4. My Forever - Clarity ; I hate when an album like this enters my top 10 as it encourages discussions about what makes an album or not. To me, 6 songs is an EP... but then automatically, is 7 songs an album? I don't even know, but for 2017 it is. The strength of this "album" surprised even me, as it continually grew on me. It's a wonderful collection of emotive modern melodic rock songs, and really deserves a mention.

3    .   One Desire    -   One Desire ; very tight contest for the second spot this year, with my 2nd and 3rd albums rating identically. I'll put this one in third, just based on personal preference... but this is a beauty. Great sound and great songs. I really, really hope this is not a once off and we get to hear a lot more from this very promising outfit. I've enjoyed this thoroughly all year. Best song, for me, is 'Love injection.'

2    .   Crazy Lixx    -   Ruff Justice ; their best album yet... this one's a great disc. Slightly dodgy lyrics with the 80's horror movie theme going on, but otherwise it's just excellent. Very melodic / commercial rock, right up my alley. Me likes a lot. My favourite must be 'Walk the Wire.'

1    .   Midnite City    -   Midnite City ; and to number one. To be honest, this was the clearest winner, for me, in several years. It was clearly above the rest of the pack and I've been playing this as much in the last few months as any album I spun from the first few weeks of 2017. Right up my alley. I believe they are already planning album number two and I hope that one features the production this one deserves, but as it is, this one's just fine. The thing I really love is the consistently perfectly placed harmony / backing vocals throughout the album. Wonderfully thought out, and they make many songs here. But overall, every song is at least really good and most are excellent. If I had to choose a favourite, it'd be real hard, but I guess it's 'Nothing's like losing you.'

And just for the record, these were my favourite EPs of 2017;

1     -    Creye     -     Straight To The Top

2     -    Michael Oakley     -     California

3     -    The Cruel Intentions     -     Sick Adrenaline (EP)

4     -    Denman     -     The Life We Live EP

5     -    The Midnight     -     Nocturnal

6     -    Something Heartfelt     -     Something Heartfelt

7     -    The Grand Masquerade     -     MMXVI - EP

8     -    Suburbia Story     -     2000 Miles - EP

9     -    Rain In July     -     Trying to Breathe

10     -    Sparks the Rescue     -     When It Thunders

Finally came around on Pink Cream 69's Headstrong and after getting the CD it's all really grown on me and digging it.  Solid melodic hard rock.  I'd probably go back on revise my 2017 list and put this one in the #10 spot now.

I'm kinda surprised by the lack of love for the new Rev Saints album.

it's such a huge step up imo. yeah the lyrics are inspiro but who cares when you have 7 or 8 killer melodic rockers and 2 nice ballads.

one of the most overlooked albums of the year imo.

to each their own. Personally I don't see how any fan of melodic rock cannot love that Rev Saints album. At least 7 killer melodic rockers in my book.

And Doug is on fire. every solo kills.

definitely one of my fav albums this year and one I could moving even higher in my top 10.

Love that you love these girls! I was genuinely surprised when you expressed interest in the songs I posted, and I never once expected the album to crack your top 10. You're welcome. ;}

Yeah, one of my better finds this year. I think I did real well to track them down all by myself. I do good things like that. Surprised you've heard of them too? ;)
