Shouldn't this be in the Prog Rock and Metal forum?

Anyway, sounds a bit 'too much' for me.

Portnoy + Sheenan = musical wank × 2

;)

Soto still sounds good even though the vocal bits were few and far between. Not a big fan of the down tuned Primus meets Kansas music however.

First listen to 'Signs of The Time' didn't really do anything for me. I did however like the instrumental section, had a 'Falling Into Infinity' fusion vibe to it. I think I liked that part so much because I was genuinely expecting a metal shred/wank fest so was pleasantly surprised. Had a few more listens to it and it is sort of a grower, not a bad song by any means. Was refreshing to hear genuine analogue keyboard sounds compared to how Dream Theater have used them in the past 10/15 years. Will probably still check out the rest of the album.

That is incredibly bad. Sounds like a bunch of guys came into the studio, jammed to their own musical idea and then someone had the grand idea to blend it all together as single musical tracks. Horrible.

Portnoy and Sheehan are fucking monster players, so with the other names also involved, this is technically going to be THE best album released this year no doubt. Hopefully there will be some huge songs to back up all the 'Widdling' The two released so far have got my interest, especially 'Coming Home'

wish more of the album was like Divine Addiction that is my fav song on here.

The whole album is too challenging. elements of songs has melody but then just spring off in some unrelated way. way too Dream Theatery for me

Self-indulgent monkey fapping. JSS's vocals are wasted if for no other reason than there aren't predictable verses and choruses. Typical prog bullshit.

There are some good parts to this album.

However what annoys me is like on the opening track - Gods of The Sun - the song is great up to 5 mins, interesting between mins 5-7 with some tasteful vocals and a key solo. But then 7-9 mins is like WTF?? The song basically stops , and then we get 2 mins of completely unrelated nonsensical 'noises' - that's the only way I can describe it, which basically completely ruins the song.

I cannot believe that anyone can actually enjoy or defend the need for those 2 mins.

I'll be part of the minority here, like I usually am with The Darkness....but this release is absolute gold to my ears. My only complaint is the final 10 minute instrumental, I would have preferred another track with JSS singing, which he sings his balls off on this one.  Easily one of the best of 2017 and makes me forget for a moment the disaster that was Dream Theater's - The Astonishing.

Still give the edge to Threshold for the best Prog release of 2017 though.

Why is this thread not in the Prog section? Can you shift it over Dan?

    • TBH, Bonfire are generally hit and miss with me anyway. Doesn't matter which version.
Not a band I sit on the edge of my seat waiting for a new release from.
But at times i really like their stuff, which is why this is a bit of a disappointment in that they are covers. But then I am kind of specific with my covers.
Was just going through The Treatment and the only cover I kept off Running With The Dogs was No Matter What, others were boring. For me, you either improve on the original - that usually means updating a much older song with a cleaner and heavier sound.
eg: Radar Love Or you change the original to a different version, while still respecting the original.
eg: Walk This Way These Bonfire ones for me are the worst kind of covers, they are basically just re-recordings
    • I'll get back to you in a few years with my opinion haha, imma try to get this one soon and be part of the discussion as it happens for a change....
    • In a word.... dreadful. Why couldn't he have done a "Is This The Way That You Want Me" style album??
    • I cannot get enough from it! Pure silky AOR uncork champagne  anthems! They did it again! Of course, I wouldn't mind if they indeed searched for the punchy Crossfire sound. As long as the songs are great.
    • I really love 2 songs + the styx/kansas worship song. Won't buy it.
    • Yeah I like it and it is more metal. some more info: Skull Fist - Way of the Road 01. You Belong to Me
      02. No More Running
      03. I Am a Slave
      04. Witch Hunt
      05. Way on the Road
      06. Heart of Rio
      07. Better Late Than Lever
      08. Don't Cross Me
      09. Stay True
    • Yeah if only he had stuck to something akin to the first two H.E.A.T releases
    • ones 85%, ones 84%  You get my point yeah. Pointless discussion going on.
    • I get Steve Perry's reasoning on doing a mellow album, what's Kenny's.?!
    • Yeah for me this is awful,a real waste,he's got a good voice would just have loved a bit more uummphff from the music,it never really gets going...all pretty plodding and samey for me
