Are Dream Theater prog metal?

Wikipedia says they are,if you trust them. I've never really got what makes a piece 'progressive' (although from various comments I gather they tend to be long?)

Length can be an element. Changing time signatures, recurring themes, often a more Classical approach to song composition, the use of uncommon instruments, these are all elements of Progressive Rock and Metal.

Check out Circus Maximus. They are Progressive Metal, but they are very Melodic. I'd start with their album Nine.

Ah, sounds like I should love it then! Is Frank Zappa prog?

The only album I know for sure that's considered prog rock is Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and I've not been able to sit through that one, which is a shame as I know it's considered one of the 'must have' albums by a lot of people. There must be some that I would enjoy though surely!

Bookmarked for future investigation.

Just listened to a bit on YouTube and it made me realise that I do like some prog music.

Based on what I've heard I'd class Dracula - Swing Of Death as somewhat progressive, and I love that album.

Categorizing music is important mainly to record stores back in the days because why on earth a jazz fans waste his time in rock sections, and sometimes rock fans don't really like metal so browsing a hard rock / AOR is much more fun.

Ahh so it is good more for browsability reasons to some extent? So ideally,in a record store it would be better for artists if they were shelved in multiple genres where possible? (Like the Hoobastank album I was looking for could have gone in Metal,Rock+mainstream sections)

Browsability (is that even a word lol) is one thing, but categorizing is also important for media, such as magazine. For example, AOR / Melodic Rock can be classified in one section (for reviews, previews, or any related news) while Hard Rock and Heavy Metal can be grouped in another section. There are maybe some bands that can fit in these two sections, but there are few others are really not, such as now Deep Purple can be grouped as AOR and Foreigner in hard rock, it's very obvious.

Dream Theater is not just a prog metal band, they're one of the pioneers back in the early days, together with Queensryche and Fates Warning. These latter two are more into heavy metal while Dream Theater can venture into heavier territory such as thrash. A media once labelled them as an exciting new band that combines both YES and METALLICA, well not too far off i guess.

If you can appreciate those two bands, chances are you're gonna like Dream Theater, but if not, then it's hard. If you dislike old prog stuffs (like Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd etc) and only into thrash/heavy metal stuffs, there are still some songs that you can appreciate. For me, I love 2 albums, 'Image and Words', one of their most accessible albums and maybe the best album in 1992, and the second one is 'Scenes From A Memory' from 1999. The third thing that I like is their 2011 album with Mike Mangini, but the rest well are maybe strictly for fans, but still you can make one great compilation from them.

They are too pretentious and 'wanky'....as soon as you think you are listening to a good song they go all 'wanky' with some ridiculous keyboard noise or something which has no tune or melody

Haha, I like making up new words (like some enjoy making up new sub genres). You knew what I meant though so maybe it should make its way into the dictionary.

I definitely get why you need the major groupings (like Metal, rock, classical, C&W, jazz etc). Plus some sub genres (like baroque, atonal, operatic etc within the classical arena; bluegrass, traditional, contemporary etc etc within C&W for example).

Plus, like you say, it is obvious why it would help in stores, magazines etc.

I was questioning more why there are so many obscure sub genres and if that helps or hinders an artist if they get pigeon holed into a certain one.

Also, if a band chooses (or their record label chooses to) categorise them as a specific genre or sub genre but they actually have a crossover sound then they could potentially be limiting their audience big time and surely the aim of most serious artists is to get their work out there to be seen, heard, worn or used - depending on what art form it is?

On the other hand, creating niche markets for your work may well be the aim in which case sub genreing would actually be a positive thing.

Guess it's one of those discussions that doesn't have a definite answer, it all depends on what the artist is after as well as what the audience is looking for and as everyone is beautifully individual there will be a billion trillion answers

Now that just smacks of someone saying that power metal is for bogans and far too heavy for them.

You think power metal is heavy? Why? Since when has speed equaled heaviness? It's no heavier than most hard rock; it just has that ridiculous, shitty, pointless same-on-every-single-song-ever-made shitty drum track. But heavy? Don't think so, mate.

Even those current bands you guys call "pop metal" are 10 times heavier than those pousuers. ;)

But yeah, power metal probably is for bogans. I don't know mate, you're telling the story. But it's not too heavy for anyone - just too bad.

I love how you say I made these incorrect assumptions about you and stuff, but keep saying how I am apparently an AOR die-hard. Where did you get that from?

Lighten up dude. It was just a bit of fun making a stupid comment which to me was as stupid as you interpreting my "too AOR" as "pussy ass gay music" or whatever you said.

But my comment wasn't even serious anyway, it was just fun.

Thank christ I pointed out that I just put a winkie smilie in some other thread. Otherwise you'd see that as an attack as well.

It's all fun, don't get so upset.

I thought we'd moved beyond this bickering and puffy chest stage *sad face*

There are only two musical genres:

1. Stuff that's good.

2. Stuff that sucks.

I agree with Fat Freddy. Either good or sucks, Haha I think labels are both good and bad. Being labeled as something can be kind of limiting and people automatically assume that you sound a certain way. On the other hand, it is a way to give people somewhat of an idea what your band or another band kind of sounds like.

Yeah, I think ideally (in stores at least) a lot of bands could benefit from being marketed and shelved in multiple sections especially if there is crossover sounds with the tracks on the album. Okay, if you have an album and every track is totally similar e.g. with screaming vocals/manic drumming or whatever then it makes sense to put it in the thrash metal section - apologies maybe 'thrash' metal would be the wrong section for that style but I'm not too hot on recognising my genres!

I'll have a listen to your band and see if I'd have thought to look in the hard rock section if I was trying to buy it.

    • Vain: ‘Disintegrate Together’ (May 1, 2024) https://sleazeroxx.com/vain-to-release-new-studio-album-disintegrate-together-on-may-1st/     I didn't want to put someone else's website up here but I wanted you to see his because if you want the CD it says theres only gonna be 200? Ya why bother for 200 but thats what it say's so I thought you would want to know.
    • I just ordered, Shotgun Mistress – [2021] Shotgun Mistress & Pre-ordered Shotgun Mistress - [2024] Kings Of The Revolution. I just found out about these guys great stuff can't believe I had never heard of ....
    • Man, I really miss places like this! I could spend hours in them just looking at all the stuff. You’re a lucky man to live near there.
    • New album out June 28. Not my style per se, but well executed IMO.
    • "Still in Love" and "Sweet Melody" by Lancia
    • I posted about this record store (well, CD store really... it has a fair amount of vinyl, but the focus is CDs) 2 years ago. I go there about once a year, and every single time I do I keep kicking myself to go there more often. Not only for the sheer enjoyment of being able to shop the music genres we love and view all these releases in hand, but because it's so damned overwhelming. There's never time to go through things at leisure, pulling out boxes under racks to rummage, because even flying through things and NOT exploring new artists, it's still 3-4 hours to go through the alphabet... let alone stopping and using their listening station (they'll let you listen to used/opened material, not still sealed merch). It's only an hour and a half drive for me each way, so there's really ZERO excuse for me not going over there more frequently. This time I remembered to take a bunch of pictures, pulling out releases from artists we enjoy just to show what they had in stock... a lot of material you'll never see at any mainstream store (even if there is any that carry CDs anymore). Sure, the prices are more expensive than what you'll pay at Amazon and other online stores, but they're not as bad as you would think, and there are bargains to be had amongst the used material when it comes to OOP discs. And to be fair, being able to view all this stuff in-hand is worth it IMO. (Although every now and then you'll see an OOP disc that is WAAAAAAAY overpriced, but at least they have the odd and unusual.) They have one of those old-school "buyer club" stamp cards, with 20 spaces. One stamp per disc purchased. Every other stamp you get a dollar off, and when you fill a card you get $16.99 off your purchase and then you get a new card. On your birthday, you get $1 off every CD and that's on top of the buyer club card discounts. First the pics from when I was going through the aisles, starting with some general pics. Every single artist has its own title card, so look at the variety and depth of the artists. Also, look at the overstock in boxes underneath all the racks! That's the shit I never have time to go through (except when there's a specific artist I'm focusing in on). You've got CDs in the racks, then ringing the entire room is a shelf of box sets and limited editions, then above that VHS tapes, and above that vintage audio equipment. Sections for DVDs and blu-rays (not just music, but movies as well, including a small section of 4K and 3D titles). There's a smaller upper room level that is nothing but vinyl. If you're going to go, plan at least a full day, not just a quick drive-by. They're open from 11AM - 7PM Eastern Time.     Expensive at $249.99, but how many places have a still-sealed copy of the Vanden Plas Epic Works box set???     And now the stuff I picked up this trip. Most is completist fodder. There are a few artists where I literally want an example of every single pressing, even if I already have other label/year/country versions... call me OCD.               I picked up this one for trade/resale even though I already have it, as it is the LOOOONG out of print original fan club edition.     Hmmm... didn't know there was a solo effort, and it seems to be thematically related to the Threshold album "Legend of the Shires".       More OCD completist fodder. I didn't know that Avalon Records (Japan) licensed releases for South Korea.         Live albums aren't normally my thing, but this appears to be way out of print, and for $10 why not?   A few OOP releases for my multichannel audio collection       I'll be posting more about these once I get my shit together, but I'm WAAAAAAAAAY fucking late to the game when it comes to the Jethro Tull 40th anniversary CD + DVD special editions. They only reason I knew about them at all is that I saw a blurb about the 40th anniversary edition of "Broadsword and the Beast", which is my alltime favorite JT album, the first one I ever heard, and I love the album cover... which led me down the rabbithole of all these anniversary editions and their multichannel mixes. Unfortunately a few of them are now OOP and insanely in the $150-300 range. I ordered all of the ones that were still in print (or that had been reprinted), but there were still 4 that I needed... and they had one of them.   And lastly, the most expensive purchase of the day, going back to previous box set discussions, this was one that wasn't on my radar at the time it came out. Based upon eBay listings, it's now a tough find... and they had one still sealed. No, it's not the Amazon exclusive that was signed by Biff Byford, but autographs aren't important enough for me to spend the $500-$1,000 that the signed version now brings. This one will do nicely at a fraction of the cost... a huge and hefty tome (literally).   So when all was said and done, a great (and expensive!) shopping day, but a place I wholeheartedly recommend visiting should you find yourself out here in flyover country. JL Records 380 Brown St West Lafayette, IN 47906 https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100041894265953
    • What's this one mate? A guess at the previous riddle or a new one?
    • At the risk of sounding foolish once again... I don't get it.
    • Album out May 31 on Metalopolis Records. The last album was stellar.
