Yeah odd comment....i thought everyone craved New Religion which was when they sounded the most commercial.

 

Maybe he means the song is quite 'safe' and wants them to let rip a bit more.....whilst still being melodic.

But if the band in question has a particular style its maybe hard for them to move away from that? I know that there are many acts that we have all mentioned in the past that changed their style at a time and got slated for it,so its perhaps not a bad thing to be should we say "familiar"
