My first entry.... an awesome song!!

CrashDiet "It's A Miracle"

"I smelled your rose, caressed your pedals,

And never bothered by the thorns that made me bleed,

I longed to feel you so deep inside me,

But now I'm stuck with you forever without remedy.

You led the game, I followed,

You were the bait, I swallowed.

It's a miracle you walk the earth alone,

It's a miracle I stand beside you,

You're like a plague in a wide and open show,

You pass it on like I need it the most."

"I got to see the doctor

For what I'm going through

A sexual infection

Of a pornographic blue

But people, to be honest,

I'll tell you in this verse

That if I had a choice to make

I'd rather had seen the nurse"

Pretty much the only non-Rob Rock song I wish wasn't cut.

All Cauterize songs. :)

Lyrics on paper don't always (never?) bring forth the impact of how they come across in song. It's very basic stuff, but I was listening to Bonfire's 'Point Blank' the other day and it's not like it's amazing writing, but having a child now, 'Look of love' took on a whole new feel for me, and I absolutely love 'Know right now' and the "What happened to the flame, that used to burn so strong / I still can see some sparks in the ash, but not enough to keep us warm" lyrics. Like I said, it's not out of this world, but I love that real heartfelt recollection of something that obviously compelled the song writer to pen a painful lyric.

Anyway, a few of my other personal faves for my own personal reasons:

Warrant - 'Quicksand-'

"Our fate is written in the stars, written on your face
Now you're holding too tight to my heart
It's gonna burst and leave an empty space
Do I love you? Yes I do, but I love my own life too
As I lay here holding your hand
I can't help but feel that you don't understand
Tighter you hold on, more that it's feeling like quicksand"
... and the rest of the 'Dog eat dog' album. And whilst on Jani Lane, I always loved his 'Private Blue World-'
"Another night spent staring at my ceiling
(It's) becoming the map of my private blue world
And pass her in the hallway but she doesn't see me
I wonder how I did that
Became that invisible
I know that it sounds insane
I don't even know her name but
I wanna be the next breath - the next that she takes
I wanna be the next phone call that she makes
I wanna be the song in her head she can't shake
I'd stand in line to be the next heart that she breaks
Another day spent staring out my window
(It's) becoming the scene of my private blue world
And I pass her on the corner but she won't talk me
I wonder how I did that
Became that intolerable"

Anyway, I could go on all day. Most my all-time favourite songs are that because the lyrics connect with me on some level. Basically, if the lyrics sounds to me like they mean something to the songwriter, odds are pretty high it'll mean something to me. :) Unless you're speaking about God - then I'll just think you're not very intelligent. ;)

I've always liked 'Black by Pearl Jam:

All the love gone bad turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be...

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky,
But why, why, why can't it be, can't it be mine?

David Lee Roth has always been a good one for lyrics:

Here's a word about my ex-girlfriend
Towards the end, conflict off and on
And I told her one night, "Honey every time we fight
I'll write a verse to this song"

Well, things got bad and things got worse
But still I struggled on
So sit back and get all comfortable
'Cause this little tune's six fuckin' hours long

I would always quote Marillion as my favourite lyrics - peotry in motion

Forgotten Sons [about Northern Ireland and the poor souls who were caught up in it]

You're just another coffin on its way down the emerald aisle
When your children's stony glances mourn your death in a terrorist's smile
The bomber's arm placing fiery gifts on the supermarket shelves
Alley sings with shrapnel detonate a temporary hell
Forgotten Sons

From the dole queue to the regiment a profession in a flash
But remember Monday signings when from door to door you dash
On the news a nation mourns you unknown soldier, count the cost
For a second you'll be famous but labelled posthumous

*****************

and one more -

Sugar Mice - [about a guy losing everything including his family through alcoholism....very sad song]

Well the toughest thing that I ever did was talk to the kids on the phone
When I heard them asking questions I knew that you were all alone
Can't you understand that the government left me out of work
I just couldn't stand the looks on their faces saying, "What a jerk"

So if you want my address it's number one at the end of the bar
Where I sit with the broken angels clutching at straws and nursing our scars
Blame it on me, blame it on me,
Sugar mice in the rain, your daddy took a raincheck

I always liked these:

Bon Jovi - Dry County

Across the border they turn
Water into wine
Some say it's the devil's blood
They're squeezing from the vine
Some say it's a saviour
In these hard and desperate times
For me it helps me to forget
That we're just born to die

I came here like so many did
To find the better life
To find my piece of easy street
To finally be alive
And I know nothing good comes easy
And all good things take some time
I made my bed I'll lie in it
To die in it's the crime

You can't help but prosper
Where the streets are paved with gold
They say the oil wells ran deeper here
than anybody's known
I packed up on my wife and kid
And left them back at home

Now there's nothing in this paydirt
The ghosts are all I know
Now the oil's gone
The money's gone
And the jobs are gone
Still we're hangin' on

Down in dry county
They're swimming in the sand
Praying for some holy water
To wash the sins from off our hand
Here in dry county
The promise has run dry
Where nobody cries
And no one's getting out of here alive

In the blessed name of Jesus
I heard a preacher say
That we are God's children
And He'd be back someday
And I hoped that he knew
Something as he drank his cup of wine
I didn't have too good of a feeling
As I head out to the night

I cursed the sky to open
I begged the clouds for rain
I prayed to God for water
For this burning in my veins
It was like my soul's on fire
And I had to watch the flames
All my dreams went up in ashes
And my future blew away

Now the oil's gone
And the money's gone
And the jobs are gone
Still we're hangin' on

Down in dry county
They're swimming in the sand
Praying for some holy water
To wash the sins from off our hand
Here in dry county
The promise has run dry
Where nobody cries
And no one's getting out of here alive

Men spend their whole lives
Waiting praying for their big reward
But it seems sometimes
The payoff leaves you feeling
Like a dirty whore
If I could choose the way I'll die
Make it by the gun or knife
'Cause the other way there's too much pain
Night after night after night

Down in dry county
They're swimming in the sand
Praying for some holy water
To wash the sins from off our hand
Here in dry county
The promise has run dry
Where nobody cries
And no one's getting out of here alive

Bon Jovi - Right side of wrong.

A friend of a friend needs a favor
No questions asked, there's not much more to say

Me and the wife, we need the money
We've got four kids all hungry, one on the way
Slip these sweat socks in your shirt and pray they think your packin'
Be sure to keep your head down, don't look 'em in the eye
And don't get fancy, Ricky, we ain't Jimmy Cagney
Look at me, let's do the job and let's get home tonight

[Chorus:]
I got a half tank of gas and if we run all the lights
We'll slip across the border on the wrong side of right
And just like Butch and Sundance we'll ride until the dawn
Sipping whiskey, singing cowboy songs
On the Right Side of Wrong

We picked a helluva of a night, from the shore I see the skyline
In a couple of hours from now Rick, we're gonna get out of this life
We'll stop for smokes, I brought a six pack, we'll stop at lookers on the way back
Hell, we'll laugh this off, keep your fingers crossed that all goes well tonight

[Chorus:]
I got a half tank of gas and if we run all the lights
We'll slip across the border on the wrong side of right
And just like Butch and Sundance we'll ride until the dawn
Sipping whiskey, singing cowboy songs
On the Right Side of Wrong

We'll make the grade, they'll know our names, I need a friend to drive here
Wear my necklace of St. Christopher and talk to him while I go inside
I'll take that suitcase, get the cash and we'll be gone before you know
Wait until we tell the girls we're moving down to the Gulf of Mexico...

[Guitar Solo]

A friend of a friend needed a favor
Life was just what happened while we were busy making plans
We never saw nothing, there was a run-in
.9 millimeter steel was coming for the windshield of that Oldsmobile
As the cop said, "Show your hands!"

[Chorus:]
I got a half tank of gas and if we run all the lights
We'll slip across the border on the wrong side of right
And just like Butch and Sundance we'll ride until the dawn
Sipping whiskey, singing cowboy songs
On the Right Side of Wrong

Pretty simple stuff I know, but I dig it.

And, although it can be frustrating, some lyrics can really sound amazing without making much sense, like for instance Greenhouze - "Tall Grasses" (which I couldn't find the lyrics for on the web).

And also

The Ark - "Uriel"

Uriel laughs, I'm drinking water
Dressed in the clothes, that I have bought her
She looks like a lamb, held up for slaughter
She is my solemn skies' daughter

But she's in the water, and I'm gonna find her
Down at the bottom, she is alive
Seagrass and bracken, is kissing her wavelet
Down at the bottom, and wave their bye-byes

You realize that I need comfort
Words that are spells, laughter that's transport
From day to day, when words are spoken
When she laughs silence is broken

But she's in the water, and I'm gonna find her
Down at the bottom, she is alive
Seagrass and bracken, is kissing her wavelet
Down at the bottom, and wave their bye-byes

This one's for you, good friend and brother
If I would slip, if I would kill her
Then take these words, spread them above her
Tell her I never could love her

'Cause she's in the water, and I'm gonna find her
Down at the bottom, she is alive
Seagrass and bracken, is kissing her wavelet
Down at the bottom, and wave their bye-byes

Sheee..
Sheee..

..is in the water, and I'm gonna find her
Down at the bottom, she is alive
Seagrass and bracken, kissing her wavelet
Down at the bottom, wave their bye-byes
Bye..

Bye..

And Andy Burrows - "Hometown"

He's got his walls and his ways
Waves are gone, he has his days
Has a lot on his mind too bad
He's only happy if he's sad
He has his canons which he fires
The only boy I know who cannot cry.

I can see the ground I can't see you
Can see our hometown I can't see you
Leave the lights on when I go
So I can watch you down below.

He had his loves and his loss
There were bridges he had to cross
We have bridges that we burn
And had so much we had to learn.

He has his canons which he fires
The only boy I know who cannot cry
I can see the ground I can't see you
Can see our hometown I can't see you
Leave the lights on when I go
So I can watch you down below.

The only boy I know who cannot cry
I can see the ground I can't see you
Can see our hometown I can't see you
Leave the lights on when I go
So I can watch you down below

Matt MacDonald from The Classic Crime is one of my favourite modern day poets.

"Broken Mess"

He can't sleep, he can't eat
He keeps thinking about her behind the locked door of the bedroom
As she knowingly tortures the shell that is left of her bridegroom
And what did he do to deserve
This whore of a wife who parades her disgrace to his face now
When he loved her and gave up his life in more ways than she knows how
All I can say is that
Love is a terrible art
It's a hook in the heart
That will drag you on broken glass
And as you protest
The shards in your flesh
The hook tears out your chest
Until you're just a broken mess
Where is God in this rot?
Depraved, she commits the most heinous of sins and breaks her vows
But he loves her despite all the crimes she devises in his house
Where is God? I've been taught
That He's close to the broken, it's true I have spoken with Him some
When I look in my brother's eyes I can see where his love comes from
And all he can say is that
Love is a terrible art
It's a hook in the heart
That can drag you on broken glass
And as you protest
The shards in your flesh
The hook tears out your chest
Until you're just a broken mess
But he has mercy on her lover and does not bleed him dry
A credit to his self control, if it were me that monster would probably die
Love is a beautiful thing
She can make your heart sing
When you're walking on broken glass
She will open your eyes
Make your heart feel alive
Point you towards the sunrise
Help you leave all this broken mess behind
Love is a beautiful thing
Will you leave your broken mess behind?
Oh, love is a beautiful thing
Will you leave your broken mess behind?
Oh, love
Oh, love
"Abracadavers"
It's like I never had time to look away;
Bodies stuck between death and decay
Are plastic and set up on display,
And their eyes are wide and they are looking my way.
Each ligament exposed each muscle connected
And every organ that I proudly neglected,
Have been arranged for the common collective.
Stomaching the sight of human flesh resurrected.
It seems we're fearfully made and designed,
But it's a shame we can be so blind.

Lyrics to live your life by.

Whitesnake

"Wine, Women An' Song"

I ain't an educated man
As all you Fleet Street preachers know,
It's just the simple things in life
Get my motor running, ready to go
If I can make you smile
I will raise my glass,
An' if you don't like it
Then, baby, you can kiss my ass!
You can tell me it's wrong,
But, I love wine, women an' song

Give me a good time woman,
An' a love potion bottle of booze
'Cos I got a juke box heart
Full of honky tonk rhythm an' blues
You better lock up your daughter, your sister too,
If get in my way, I'm gonna rock an' roll over you,
Ain't nothing you can do

You can tell it's wrong,
But I love wine, women an' song
Wine, women an' song, talking 'bout
Wine, women an' song,
Wine, women an' song,
Wine, women an' song
You get what you can
But, don't take too long
Wine, women an' song,

Give me a rock an' roll band
With a mean an' dirty blues guitar,
Take me to a dance hall palace
With a twenty four hour bar
Then you better lock up your daughter, your sister too,
If you get in my way, I'm gonna rock an' roll over you,
Ain't nothing you can do

You can tell me it's wrong,
But I love wine, women an' song
Wine, women an' song, talking 'bout
Wine, women an' song,
Wine, women an' song,
Wine, women an' song
You get what you can
But, don't take too long,
Wine, women an' song

Wine, women an' song,
Wine, women an' song,
Wine, women an' song
You get what you can
But, don't take too long,
Wine, women an' song

Wine, women an' song

Fish has always been a brilliant lyricist .. 'Forgotten Sons' is probably my favourite Marillion song, but I have always liked these lines from 'Slainte Mhath':

"From the dreams on the barbed wire at Flanders and Bilston Glen

From a Clydeside that rusts from the tears of its broken men

From the realisation that all we've been left behind

Is to stand like our fathers before us in the firing line

Waiting on the whistle to blow

We stand here waiting on the whistle to blow

They promised us miracles, and the whistle still blows

Broken promises, and the whistle still blows ..."

And at the other end of the spectrum, another one from Dave Lee Roth:

"I asked her: 'How the hell d'you get in those tight blue jeans?'

She said: 'For starters, you can buy me a drink' ..."

Yeah, Jon Bovi is a good lyricist. Even if his current music frustrates me, I can't deny his songwriting.

I was listening to 'Blaze Of Glory' the other day and I thought, wow, this dude really, really pulled this off. That album concept could have been a nightmare for most people who tried it, I dare say. For it not to be a cheesy bag of garbage, is impressive. But for it to actually be a really well written and crafted album, huge props for that. I love a lot of the lyrics on that album, especially in 'Miracle' and 'Santa Fe.'

No doubt he's gone off the rails in recent years, but the dude was a master of his craft in his prime. Like Bonfire/Lessman, though, he/they definitely dropped the ball later in their career.
