1989 - best albums

Whoa, another amazing year!

Although very few albums are absolutely perfect, these would all be 10/10 in my opinion (and the first six would be very high up in my all-time best list):
Sanctuary - Into The Mirror Black

Lion - Trouble In Angel City
Lillian Axe - Love & War

Blue Murder - Blue Murder

Pariah - Blaze of Obscurity
Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry

Bang Tango - Psycho Cafe
Tesla - The Great Radio Controversy
Shark Island - Law of the Order
Obituary - Slowly We Rot

And these would be very close, probably 9.5/10:
Danger Danger - Danger Danger
Rage - Secrets In A Weird World
Michael Monroe - Not Fakin' It
Testament - Practice What You Preach
Bonfire - Point Blank
Axel Rudi Pell - Wild Obsession
Leatherwolf - Street Ready
Overkill - The Years Of Decay
Pestilence - Consuming Impulse

And these are also fantastic, 9/10 or very close:
Motley Crue - Dr Feelgood
Icon - Right Between The Eyes
Dangerous Toys - Dangerous Toys
Faith No More - The Real Thing
Annihilator - Alice In Hell
Savatage - Gutter Ballet
Nuclear Assault - Handle With Care
Laaz Rockit - Annihilation Principle
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness

And an honourable mention to one of my least favourite albums of all time. -10000/10:
Warrant - Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich

Nice list, interesting read, but your ratings are high IMO. Lion, Blue Murder, Tesla, Bonfire, Danger Danger, Motley Crue and Icon are all excellent, but none would rate 9.5 out of 10, most would be 8 out of 10 though. And what is so bad about DRFSR??

The Lion and Blue Murder albums are as close as it gets to perfect imo. No bad songs and some absolute classics. Easily 10/10 for me. The Bonfire and Tesla albums are my favourites by those bands, absolutely incredible albums.

Bought DRFSR after hearing "Sometimes She Cries", only to find out that it was the best song by about a billion miles and I even went off that one.

It never ceases to amaze me how different people's opinions can be on bands and releases (not saying this is a bad thing!) as I would take DRFSR over Blue Murder and Lion any day...I thought those 2 releases to be average at best....

Blue Murder is average I agree, still a good album but Lion is pretty exceptional and I also agree that Warrant DRFSR is a great album too but for me, it's inferior to Lion and 'Cherry Pie' is a better one overall

Well, this was a very good year indeed, so I've expanded my list to 30 albums this time! This was probably when I was buying loads of new albums at the time they came out (rather than retrospectively many years later) after reading about these great new bands in the likes of Kerrang and Metal Hammer... Badlands, Blue Murder, Bonham, Cats In Boots, Dream Theater, Junkyard, Saraya, Sea Hags, Skid Row, Vain... ah, those were the days.

The big surprises for me were fantastic albums from Marillion and Metal Church with their new singers, as well as Kingdom Come really rocking out as they tried to move away from their Led Zep sounding debut.

Bang the drums for truth (Yosiki's ones preferably!). Are you sure we aren't brothers/sisters from other parents(too drunk to work the combinations now)?

Btw, I've seen what you did there. I didn't rate any song of the record with full marks because of Toshi's vox. Now let's get naked and sing along the X chorus... :beerbang:

Yep, I chose to do my lists in alphabetical order, and picked the best albums from each year. So for 1989, the list ended up containing 30 of the 57 albums I own for that year, which is a good selection. Most other years ended up with smaller lists, so I could still stick to the "Best Of" constraint that these threads are about.

I'd probably find it too difficult to put them into order, certainly further down the list anyway. But then my collection covers quite a varied selection of genres. I could put all the Prog Rock or Heavy Metal ones near the top just because I've listened to them more than Melodic Rock / AOR, but it wouldn't necessarily mean one is better than the other.

And my tastes change as well... I've found some things I used to like don't really float my boat as much now. For example, some albums that I used to think were really good now sound a bit dated. Some of my "million notes per second" Power Metal CDs sound a bit cheesy now. Etc. I'm also getting back into some of my Hard Rock bands which I haven't listened to for a while.

I guess that's why I decided to add a some descriptive running commentary to my lists instead, to show my appreciation that way.

Great list, buddy, although I don't see much metal in it (even if I use astronomers' definition of "metal". :D ). I almost rated all the ones in your list, wow!, I never thought you were a thrash junkie. Are your '89 ratings done?

well I think I still have around 20-30 more to rate, I like to know your complete list too just in case there are few metal albums that I should listen. I like some good ol thrash although many of them didn't rate well lol but yeah thrash is a part of genre that I grew up with, but let's say in retrospect, 75% of them are hard rock/AOR and the rest are thrash, heavy and other metal stuffs :)

I don't like thrash/death, personally, except some cool prog/tech-thrash (and Death + Cynic), but :

just because you've rated Kreator and Exodus, I definitely think that you should listen and rate the 1989 releases (and then decide if you want to include them in your playlist) from Sodom, Voivod, Mekong Delta, DBC,Toxic and Watchtower(prog metal godfathers).

I just transferred to excel my 89 ratings. I rated 55 releases and I'm still half way. Hope to finish the next days.

yes I think I should rate them except DBC never heard them, do you think they're good ?

There are few more like Laaz Rockit, Powermad, and Nuclear Assault too, I believe they should fall around 70-80% mark

2,3 & 4 make perfect sense to me - each one a classic album from 1989.

BUT..................Dalton???? Seriously????

A massively underproduced wet fish of an album with about 3 stand out tracks and a couple of truly awful tracks into the bargain.

Yes seriously, what's wrong with you? :yikes: That album has that typical Swedish AOR sound of the era. Packed full of catchy songs that you like instantly. Some say you would get tired of those songs eventually. Well guess what? I still love them! A good sign of quality songs. No "truly awful tracks" on this one, you must have heard another album :D

And after relistening to the Treat album, I realize I remembered wrong. It aint that good, only 79,1 %. "Coup de Graze" is their best, followed by "The Pleasure Principle".

Treat - OC at 79.1% ? wow, what went wrong with that album considering you like the scandi-sound of Dalton ? as much as I love Dalton as well, i think Treat is definitely in a higher league

I do like Treat a lot, ever since I saw them live in my hometown back in the mid 80´s. And 79% is a very good rating, close to 4/5 (80 %) which in my book is "Very good". With my "It aint that good", I meant, it was not good enough to be in the top 10 in 1989 as I thought it would be. I would rate their albums in the follow order:

  1. Coup de Grace - 93 % (The best comeback album ever after such a long break?)
  2. The Pleasure Principle - 89 %
  3. Dreamhunter - 87 %
  4. Scratch and Bite - 81 %
  5. Organized Crime - 79 %
  6. S/T - Haven't given it enough spins to judge it fairly, but not their best in my opinion.

I was looking at your list thinking, wow, this dude actually thinks 'Pleasure Principle' is better than 'Organized Crime?' WTF? I'd love to see that breakdown. And then, to top it off, you have 'Scratch & Bite' higher also? Holy shit mate... I disagree hugely with that list, but to each their own.

I'm not sure how I'll rank everything, but I'd bet the entire mortgage on my house that 'Organized Crime,' 'Dreamhunter' and 'Coup De Grace' would be the top 3 by a large margin, possibly in that order.

Dalton album sounds fine to me.

I have to admit the closeness of ratings surprised me a bit, but when I look at why, it makes perfect sense. The best D2 songs are easily the better songs on the two albums. But, the weaker D2 songs ('Saturday night,' 'Live it Up' and to a degree 'Boys will be boys') are the weakest on the two albums. 'Heartbroken' is the weakest on the Dalton disc, but after that it'd be 'Like an angel,' which is still a great song.
