Does anyone know how many versions of this will be released and if the tracklisting will vary much?

The only bonus track will be a live version of 'Dont Stop Believin' so just got for the standard release.

This album received a rare 100 rating on melodicrock.com so I guess I am interested now :)

Anyone know the official release date? I thought I read somewhere it was a Walmart or Best Buy exclusive or something?

Is out 30th May here. I'll definitely pick it up as the songs sound very strong, but 100% is OTT. Most of these tunes really are irritatingly long and drag way too much. I just don't have the patience to wait 2 minutes for a chorus (like on "City of Hope"), and I disagree that this is massively different from their last album - as despite more variety it's pretty similar IMO just less instant. Stunning ballads though...

I really enjoyed REvelation and I liked the sounds samples on this one. I dont know about the 100 rating but it is shaping up to be a very good cd.

That rating isn't so rare anymore it seems. Treat and WET I believe both got 100% and Journey's Arrival got 99% and many others have been up there lately as well.

yes i've seen couple of perfect score from Andrew, but don't know if 'Eclipse' will be that high for me, as the two singles posted earlier honestly didn't do much for me unlike 'Never Walk Away' and 'After All These Years' hit homerun at the very first listening

hopefully the rest of album will be awesome

The 100% score will always raise a few eyebrows, probably more so mine.

Listening to the samples they don`t sound too immediate to me, that suggests to me I won`t go off them so soon, really look forward to the album and seeing them a fortnight sunday.

Agreed... The two you mention, along with "Higher Place" are what I consider the most ESCAPE / FRONTIRES / RAISED ON RADIO-esque... and the Journey sound I enjoy the most.

Certanily I will buy the new album, but my days of getting excited about anything "new" from my favorite "old" bands is over. I've been dissapointed so many times the past decade plus I'm simply jaded beyond reproach.

Looking forward to the tour with Night Ranger and Foreigner, however.

imho, this is the best non steve perry album Journey's delivered & definately one of the best of all their discography.

Is this based on the samples you`ve heard or the full album? :drink:

I've heard most of the album today and I have to say that I am stunned by the sheer brilliance of some of these songs!

Just to mention a few - 'Tantra' & 'To Whom It May Concern' are both excellent ballads. Everything about these songs is perfect. Pineda sounds amazing and the solos are just inspired.

This leads me to this comment : would Perry have sounded any better on this album? The answer pure & simple is no! What Pineda has done here on this album is prove what a world class vocalist he is - quite simply an awesome performance from beginning to end.

But there is no doubt that this is Schon's album. He fought for these songs - and they are guitar songs - every opportunity there is another amazing solo.

There are still some big albums to come this year but they are going to need to be bloody good to touch this - totally blown away and then some.

Looking forward to many more spins and can't wait to have the original in a few days!!

Cheers

My first thought on hearing this album was the outstanding guitar work by Schon. My second thought was how good Pineda sounded. My third thought was that this is a fantastic album! :beerbang:

LOL, see all the losers over at Melrock are slating it.....they all need their ears testing IMO.

I think it's understandable. A lot of people have got into the band based upon their 3-minute singles alone, and this album has none of those songs on it at all. Sure there's great musicianship/vocals etc etc, but for me if there isn't a great song/chorus that sticks in your head then all of the above is pointless. On initial impressions I think they've pushed this too far...

I think the band were pretty clear that this wasnt going to be your run of the mill Journey album. They stated that they 'had enough standard issue hits'. This album was all about creating something different. Pushing the boundaries both musically and artistically (and why shouldnt they after 30 odd years), and I believe they have done that and produced something pretty memorable.

& with ragrds to songs not sticking in your head, Ive listened to this about 5 times now and pretty much have all the songs playing in my head....some very clever hooks on this album - in particular songs with very strong hook lines are 'Chain Of Love', 'Tantra', 'Anything Is Possible' (pretty close to standard Journey song by the way, except for the AWESOME solo at the end!!!), ''Resonate', 'To Whom....'. In fact pretty much all of them have parts which stick in your head, I'd be interested actually to hear which ones you think dont make the mark, cos to me they are all pretty awesome. The only song which feels a little confused is Ritual, but its still pretty good.

My 2 cents:

Not a horrible album, but won't be in my top 5 of the year. Gone are the over-the-top choruses that one used to associate with "Journey" and it seems more of a vehicle for Schon's noodling than anything else.

It's almost as if the vocals are an afterthought.

Maybe Schon should just cut to the chase, call it a prog album, and be done with it.

I've enjoyed what I've heard so far (just got it yesterday)and will continue to give it spins. The packing totally sucks. Just a cheap cardboard gatefold. If the euro version is better I may have to consider an upgrade.

there is NO WAY this is going to sell like the last one did. The greatest hits package is what pushed those sales. when this doesn't come close to that I'm afraid what will happen next for the band.

I don't know that they need to sell near as many as the last one. The Walmart version of Eclipse looks like it cost about $1.00 to produce so they should make plenty of cash selling far less amounts.

Well, I have to say that to call me underwhelmed would be like saying norks are kind of okay.

Dan says it won't rate in his top 5 - it won't rank in my top 100... not even close. I also don't think it's completely horrible and I don't totally hate it, but man it is bland and the songs could not be less interesting. Yes, Schon sounds amazing, as does the dude with the voice. But that just becomes so insignificant because the songs are so boring.

I don't know what they're saying at Melodicrock.com, but I couldn't fault someone for being displeased with this... because I'm one of them.

I thought the last album was excellent, but this one is no different to stuff like 'Generations' or whatever other forgettable CDs they've released in the last decade or so. The only difference here is there isn't really any one or two songs that stand out. At least there were a few on the other discs. In two years this CD will be another blemish on their discography that most people will have forgotten.

I guess 'Someone' was about the best song on here, and 'City of hope' and 'Edge of a moment' would be next in line. But none of those 3 are that great, and the rest? Well... pass. To be honest, I'm not actually sure I'll even bother buying this one...

i've listened to this one 3 times yesterday in entirety and came to conclusion that this might be too technical for most AOR fans, and yes, the whole songs aren't great and inferior compared to 'Revelation'.

Schon had said something about 'more rockin' album' and while it's accomplished here, i guess it needs to be combine with a majestic, huge hooks, and strong grippin' arrangement which is their strongest element, but somehow it lacks that here.

the first two singles are passable, not bad at all after several spins, but they should put another better songs upfront. Some great moments here are 'Edge of The Moment', 'Anything Is Possible', and 'Someone'. 'Tantra' is quite good but too long, and the rest are average at best.

I don't understand how people claim this is the best post-Perry album or 10/10 rating as I think this is the second-worst after 'Generation', a major decadence from the prior, and struggling impossibly to go past 7/10, but this could be a grower, I'll still buy this one to complete the discography, and keen to give this another spin, later.

Ha lol didn't expect any other comments from a few on here. Great album for me. Most of these songs have great choruses and hook lines, really think you lot must be listening to a different disc lol!! There's been some real disappointing clunkers this year but this isn't one if them. Just gets better with every spin IMO

After 3 or 4 spins now I'd say I'm right in the middle on this. There's barely a weak moment on it and some of the vocals/musicianship are stunning so listening to the whole thing through is quite an experience. But the greater focus on musicianship and the less focused approach means the choruses don't stand-out as much, plus the pace is too leisurely and the verses/pre-choruses too drawn-out on a lot of songs to make them stick IMO. One or two are frankly a struggle to sit through. Overall it's a quality disc but my natural taste for shorter/punchier songs will mean I'll always prefer "Revelation" to this...

    • I had the need to go to Bloomington, IL, about an hour west of me, so this time instead of just thrift stores in that town, in the wake of the JL Records trip I figured I would check and see if there were still any dedicated "record stores" there. The last time I went CD-hunting in Bloomington was almost 25 years ago. Since pawn shops stopped carrying CDs, and I only got into thrifting since I retired, for the last 20 years or so almost everything I buy has been online in one form or another. I always forget that college towns *can* be good sources of CDs, but it's soo damned inconsistent. West Lafayette (where JL Records is located) is the home of Purdue University (39,000 students), and Bloomington, IL is the home of Illinois State University (21,000 students). Why do I always forget about this?... because I live in the town with the main campus of the University of Illinois (44,000 students... bigger than either of those)... and it has NOT A SINGLE FUCKING MUSIC STORE on campus. There's only one, way off campus, and it's absolutely pathetic. It's basically a 100,000 population community with ZERO music stores. So I've gotten away from thinking about those opportunities for CD hunting... which as it turns out, has been a major mistake on my part. There are two record/CD stores on the ISU campus in Bloomington, located 2 doors apart on the same street! They both opened 20 years ago this year (after I had stopped my regular CD hunting trips to Bloomington). I wondered if, given the timing, they were both owned by the same party, but no they are competition, but friendly competition. Each owner spoke positively of the other and recommended I visit their counterpart. The two stores are North Street Records and Waiting Room Records. They are very similar to one another, and yet extremely different from JL Records from my last trip. Whereas JL was 80% CDs and 20% vinyl, both of these stores are the exact opposite. JL stocked a lot of current releases in our euro-centric genres, whereas these two stores are more what you would expect: rock = "classic rock", with very little in the way of import releases from the labels we know. That said, both stores had dedicated "heavy metal" sections, although primarily focused on death metal and thrash, as opposed to melodic, power, or prog metal. There were some interesting items of note in their used sections. Where JL typically priced things closer to full retail (used CDs $10-15, new CDs $16-25), these stores made up for their lack of variety compared to JL, in lower price points: used CDs $4-10, new CDs ($10-16). I didn't have time to take pics of the stores themselves this time out, as I was a bit rushed, but I plan to make a return trip at a more leisurely pace (although it's always going to be a PITA, as the campus parking enforcement rigorously enforces the 1-hour parking time limit or you get a $20 ticket, so moving your car every hour sucks). So going over my store-specific impressions and acquisitions... outside of a few music blu-rays for my collection, everything I picked up was for resale on eBay; stuff that I thought had enough room to justify picking up. First Waiting Room Records. This store was the larger of the two, more brightly lit, spacious, and appeared to cater more to the artsy-fartsy clientele. More of an emphasis on jazz and world music. Vintage audio equipment for sale in various places. This store had several boxes of $1 CDs (6 for $5, 13 for $10) as well as a box on the sidewalk outside the door of free cds. I availed myself of both, this cheap stuff just more out of curiosity and experimentation than anything in my wheelhouse. Lots of CD singles and radio station promos. The vast majority of what I bought here were actually bootlegs. A local collector who was getting out of physical media had sold a spate of Russian 2-on-1 boots. These were very common on eBay in the 2000-2010 period, but have dried up since then. Only really of interest to diehard completists, but depending on the artist, they can sell for fairly big bucks. As I typically do, prior to purchase I asked "any discounts for larger purchases?" I learned early on that while discounting varies greatly from store to store, if you don't ask you don't always get... so I unashamedly always ask. In this case it amounted to 10% off, which basically covered the sales tax... better than nothing.           Assassinator is a local metal band, found zero examples listed on eBay     And the carton of $1 and free CDs.   Now we move on to North Street Records. Smaller location, more dimly lit, but more my speed. Proprietor looked like he stepped out out of Duck Dynasty... a bit reserved initially, but opened up as the visit progressed. Stuff was stacked EVERYWHERE. I know I missed things, so I know I will go back to look at things more thoroughly. More rock-focused than the other store. Lots of Mobile Fidelity vinyl releases brand new, quite a large selection of CD box sets. No $1 CDs like the other place, but the pricing was better to begin with, and the discount he offered at the end was better. What caught my eye was a whole run of 13 Todd Rundgren and Utopia albums. Not inherently HH fodder per se, although certain songs definitely could fit... the material is all over the map stylistically, from pop to rock to experimental and DEVO-esque. Historically, the Utopia releases resonated with me more so than his solo efforts. These, however, were all Japanese vinyl-sleeve replica releases from 2008, part of the limited edition 80th anniversary reissue series. Looking them up online on both eBay and Discogs reveals that they are in very short supply and some of them can sell for above $50 each. They were stickered EXTREMELY reasonably to begin with at $10 each. When I checked out, he basically offered that if I bought those 13 as marked, he would knock off most of the sales tax and the other titles I had pulled would be free. I couldn't argue, as that worked out to approximately 25% off. Not to mention that his marked price on the still-sealed Dream Theater Luna Park 3CD + blu-ray set was dirt cheap to begin with. All in all, at was a great trip, and now a more semi-local source to shop at periodically.
    • Hi, I am looking for a hard copy of this. If anyone can help, Please let me know.   Thanks,   Rick
    • New song 'Freefall' taken from the album 'Hypnotized' out July 12 through Frontiers.
    • The definitely do put some nice effort into their videos. Yeah, that release date feels like it was a little farther out than necessary.  I feel like early June probably would've been fine to still allow plenty of promotion time and a few singles/videos. I guess I get it though.  It seems like albums die and get forgotten pretty quickly these days so the best way to give it legs is probably doing a slow burn with getting songs out there before ultimately releasing the album.
    • Ah, I love it. If they carry on like this, the videos will soon be more elaborate than the tracks. It's a pity that the album won't be released until July.
    • What a cock tease... premieres in 20 minutes...
    • 2 for 2 for me.  These guys just keep cranking out fun, catchy tunes.
    • A little heavy on the auto-tune, but otherwise solid.
    • Heard the same and agree....snippet sounds like Disturbed or something.  I just don't get these bands sometimes.  Their popularity was made from rocking, catchy tunes....so just do that lol.   It was only a snippet of the intro I think so maybe the song will go somewhere....but I doubt it.
