What are the really scary movies?

The last one that scared me was the original FOG when I saw it at the moves whenever it came out. In retrospect, I think the pulsing Carpenter score had a lot to do with it.

Monster and slasher movies aren't scary to me and I haven't seen a really good new in many years. A good zombie movie can make me pretty tense if I really get into them and put myself in the story. For some unknown reason, alien abduction movies have always been scary to me, and can still unnerve me. CE3K used to give me chills, but I'm used to it now, great movie. The movie COMMUNION still freaks me out when I see it :)

I love the original Fog one of my fave films, the remake was rubbish though! I think I like films that are unnerving rather than just plain horror especially slasher movies and the prolific gore of Saw or Hostel, which kind of turn me off horror as there's no horror about them in my book. Having said that I think House of a 1000 Corpses is great and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But I'm a sucker for the old old films like Vampyr and Nosferatu e.t.c.

One that spooked me years ago was Phantasm...I still like it but haven't seen it for years!

I also quite liked Silent Hill.

^ LOL! Yeah PHANTASM was so creepy when it was new, one of my alltime favs but unwatchable to me now.

I usually try to avoid seeing the B-list monster movies I used to love, most of them just look so bad today. For instance, I thought about rewatching PIRANHA when the new movie came out, but I don't dare. I'd rather keep my memories of it :)

Salems Lot...a good ole vampire flick.

Oh yesss... as a kid that was the one that scared me most.

My mom worked a night job and I was home alone watching that one night and was actually to afraid to move from the spot I was in. I was sitting on the couch, all lights off, with my back to a huge bay window with the curtains open. Mind you... you could see no other houses from ours as we live down a long gravel lane next to wetlands. When the scene with the child vampire scratching at the window came on I froze and got goosebumps like never before. I froze... I just knew something was watching me from behind outside that bay window. About 3 minutes later I jumped from the couch without turning around and ran for the kitchen and hit the light switch as fast as I could.. Needless to say... I didn't go back it the living room that night. I also never went to bed until after my mom got home either. She asked why the TV was still on... Hell, I wasn't going anywhere near that window.

Another one that scared me as a youngster was... "MAGIC". The one about the wooden puppet. That one scared me cause the Christmas before I saw it I got a damn puppet like that. It happened to be sitting out on my dresser when I watched that one. I threw it in my closet and the next day I took it to the basement where it stayed for about 25 years until my mom moved. While helping her pack I threw that puppet in a dumpster to be hauled off forever.

Not really a scary movie but one I thought had plenty of suspense was Vacancy. My wife hated it which is usually the sign of good horror flick.

I really liked 'Vacancy.' Good film. You seen the prequel? Not bad either, but not as good as the original.

I must be far to desensitised (sp) over the years if watching everything "scary" or "the scariest movie ever", but I will agree that Dead Silence was a good movie and how can you miss with Donnie Wahlberg and creepy "Magic" like dolls and puppets.

One that sits ill with me, still, is The Shining. for some reason that scene at the top of the stares with the mouse masked dude blowing the other masked dude still gives me the heebee jeebee's.

The ending of The Blair Witch was damn good too! I wouldn't go into my basement at night for a long while after that.

There are many good horror/thriller genre movies out there, nothing too make you wet yourself, but some quality productions none the less. The Scream trilogy is sweat. I know What You Did Last Summer. From Beyond. Re-Animator. My Bloody Valentine (the original). Ravenous. Brotherhood Of The Wolf. I Spit On Your Grave. The Demon movies are good and gory/scary. Wolfen. The Prophecy. Scanners. Halloween (original). To name a few.

And not to slam anyone, but the recent flood of "scary" movies have been pretty pathetic. I know many love Paranormal Activity, but the cheap jolt scare is lame imho. The original ending was SO VERY much better, but obviously not "scary" enough for for the masses. Had to think about it too much I suppose. And the slewof Asian quality scary movies that where americanized did little for me. The whole Grudge series was a bust. The Ring was OK, but The Ring 2 was not so good.

I agree w/my man Terry that while there a lot of so called "horror" films out there nowadays, very few of them are actually 'scary.'

I noticed several nods in this thread thus far for "The Descent," I should've mentioned that one as well cuz it was a very well made, creepy, claustrophobic lil' flick. It almost didn't need the CHUDs that show up in the second half because even up till then, the situation the characters were in (trapped underground in an unmapped cave) was scary enough by itself. Then when the critters finally show themselves it cranks the tension up into the red.

I'm not a big one for the "torture porn" genre so I generally don't even bother with stuff like "Hostel," the "Saw" series, etc. -- if I wanna see meat grinders in action all I gotta do is go to the supermarket and look thru the little window in the meat department to watch the butchers at work.

I stand by my earlier recommendation of "The Others" w/Nicole Kidman -- seriously, that was the first movie to actually make the hair on the back of my neck stand up in Lord only knows how long. I've always loved a good ghost story ever since I was a kid, and "The Others" definitely qualifies. As a bonus, Nicole looks smokin' hot in it as well.

Oh, and I mentioned this round here some time ago, but a year or two back I watched "Pet Sematery" again for the first time in a decade-plus and WHOA, that thing hit me like a brick between the eyes. I had always enjoyed it back in the day for the gorehound aspect but now that I've become a parent of two small kids, much of that film is kinda like my (and every other parents') worst nightmare come to life. It poked at a whole new set of fears that I didn't even really know I had. It was like seeing it for the first time, through a whole new set of eyes.

:agree:

I forgot to mention that one, a great horror film, really creepy. The ending is nasty; brilliant, but very disturbing.

I too will concur that The Descent was rather tasty and as brother Keef pointed out the tension was palpable way before the "Chuds" appeared.

Hell the second Descent isn't bad either. Doesn't stray too far from the original and leaves the door WIDE open for another film.
