Yeah have seen Tsar's follow up several times and passed as it was terrible.

Will I be lynched if I mentioned Daughtry? 2 great albums IMO but not sure what the masses think.

Tonic - Sugar anyone?

Not at all, I love Daughtry, but the albums arent consistent enough for me. He has some killer songs tho no doubt.

Tonic have about 10 fillers for every good song, imo.

Not quite 10, but I agree the filler count is pretty high :)

I like alot from everyone's listsHere are my top Modern Hard Rock releases of the past 10 years 2000-20091.) Waltham - s/t2.) Marvelous 3 - Ready, Sex, Go3.) Hinder - Take It To The Limit4.) Story Of The Year - The Black Swan5.) Shinedown - The Sound Of Madness6.) RA - Duality7.) Anberlin - Cities (I got this before even knowing about NTFP, so it has a sweet spot for me. Although I can understand why more enjoy NTFP, it does kick ass. I also enjoy New Surrender, but have sorta grown tired of the Anberlin sound.)8.) Heaven Below - Countdown To Devil9.) Monty Are I - Break Through The Silence10.)Thriving Ivory (pussy rock, yet killer songs)Damn 3,4,5 and 10 are from 2008, a great year. So far this year I love the new SOTY and Taking Dawn (although I'm having a tough time calling the Taking Dawn modern rock, sorta like Hinder's Take It To The Limit and Heaven Below's Countdown To Devil.

Cities is a great album too, but took a while to grow on me unlike NTFP which I loved instantly. Plus Cities has that awful compressed sound to it, the guitars are way too fuzzy which is a bit of a shame. Forgot about RA, great band!

Why is it that I love Hinder's Take It To The Limit but loathe Extreme Behaviour?

Picked up Extreme Behaviour and got tired of it fast which put me off the follow up.

Oh another good album to pick up is All The Same by The Thornbirds, with Russ Parrish and Darren Leader from non other than Steel Panther. They ditch the wigs, spandex and over the top guitar solos and stick to a more simple modern rock sound, worth a listen IMHO.

Wow, thanks for that last bit there, will check out The Thornbirds for sure!

I agree 'Cities' by Anberlin is a good CD, but took a long time to get into. 'New Surrender' is better, imo. But the first two are still my faves.

I'll stick to Steel Panther, I wasn't overly impressed with the samples at CD Baby. Too much Beatles style added to the music. Not bad, just kinda sounds dated, sounds like 2002 all over again.

Though I've "arrived to the party late" in this thread, my list would include, in no particular order:

Hinder, New Device, Taking Dawn, Skillet, Anberlin, Cauterize, Fireflight, +/- Linkin Park (their more melodic songs/LPs), Orianthi. But, most of the bands discussed in this thread are pretty cool and would make my long list....Cheers, Jeff.

Speaking of Hinder... heard a new Jet Black Stare song today called 'With you'. Maybe a b-side to the new single, 'Runaway'? 'Runaway' is pretty cool catchy rock, maybe a bit simple but 'With you' is the most blatant "we'll get drunk and have sex but not sure what happened the morning after" Hinder type of the song you could imagine. It's like 'Up all night' part II. Amazing. Anyway, hopefully they are going to make a full 'Take it to the limit' style CD if these two songs are any indication.

Beatles?! ARGH! Oh well, can't go wrong for $3.47 I guess. I'm willing to try.

Ok Geoff, I'm slowly getting an idea of what you like or dislike so I'll be sure to put a "Recommended for Geoff" tag on anything modern to stop you wasting your money!!! ;)

New Device are pretty cool! Caught them opening for Vain in London and picked up their CD. Their vocalist sounds like the guy from the Norwegian band Span, if anyone remembers them. Oh and while the album isn't too great (in my opinion) the song Poison by Steadlur is pretty awesome! :headbanger:

Agreed that New Device are awesome, and Steadlur is a good disc too, just as you say, not amazing. I didn't even classify New Device or Taking Dawn as "modern." Even Steadlur was borderline.

Sorry for being slow to upload 'Paper Wings' too. Haven't forgotten, just been a little side-tracked at home the last couple of afternoons. Potential holiday time looms. :)

So Nazz, with your insight into my tastes so far would you say Thornbirds will be nice in my ears, or will I hate it?

Well, err... I think that potentially you might, possibly, maybe like it, or at least some fo it. Sure they're Beatles influenced, but then again so are a lot of bands (*cough* Enuff Z'Nuff *cough*). Ok, to me the Thornbirds remind me of Hey! Album era Marvelous 3, mixed with a bit of The Exies. So it's not as polished or arena rock ready as Ready Sex Go, but still has some catchy melodies. You have to like Internet Xplorer!

Nice. As I said, for $3.47 I can't possibly go wrong, but I like that M3 album and don't mind the Exies either, so it sounds promising enough to me.

New Device + Vain on the same stage???!!!! Wow, that show would rank very highly on my fantasy list of concerts I'd (almost) kill to attend, given how much I like those two bands...Reminds me, I need to go back and check out any/all updates in the "Vain- All Those Strangers" thread, would like to pick up an official silver pressed copy (I've got the semi-official CD-R with the topless lady on the cover) if it's really available......Never heard of Span, am actually gonna look them up just for kicks ....Jeff.

New Generation Superstars were also playing that night too, twas a great gig :). Span aren't too great, but if you're gonna look them up for kicks, then start out with the song "Don't Think The Way They Do". It's my favorite song of theirs, plus they made a video for it, so it should be on Youtube somewhere.

Daughtry is a decent shout, especially the debut, but not in the territory of Top 30 Modern Rock albums IMO (unless you haven't heard that many!)

I would go with the Daughtry discs over some of the so called top 30....

I thought I'd bump this to see if anyone's lists have changed. Personally, I'm terrible with making lists. I have serious commitment issues. Also, I don't listen to a lot of modern rock, so my selections would vary greatly, due to lack of exposure. Anyway, I'm just gonna throw out some names in no particular order, apart from the first.

The Classic Crime - The Silver Cord (one of my all-time favourite albums, period.)

The Classic Crime - Phoenix (this one is brilliant, with time it could even surpass The Silver Cord)

The Classic Crime - Albatross

DramaGods - Love (Geoff, did you ever listen to this?)

Population 1 - Population 1

Kutless - To Know That You're Alive

Disciple - Southern Hospitality

Disciple - Horseshoes & Handgrenades

Shinedown - The Sound of Madness

Lovex - Watch Out!

I've started to go through a lot of these modern rock threads, trying to get educated. The problem with being young and hung up on the past is I spend so much time listening to 70s and 80s music that I'm so out of touch with what the kids are listening to.

Never heard of either of these. Would I seriously like them? Do I invest time in them or do they sound like Jamiroquai? ;)

As for a change in my list, probably not at all to be honest. Looks pretty damn awesome to me as it is. :)

I guess I'd just add what's been released since in some context:

Trust Company - Silence in black and white

Destrophy - Cry havoc

Simple Plan - Get your heart on

David Cook - This loud morning

Stealing Eden - Truth in tragedy

Adelita's Way - Home School Valedictorian

Forever the Sickest Kids - s/t

The Friday Night Boys - Everything you ever wanted: The B-sides

Blessed By A Broken Heart - Feel The Power

Destine - Illuminate

Namesake - Borders And Fences

Safetysuit - These Times

Hit The Lights - Invicta

Throw The Fight - What Doesn't Kill Us

My Darkest Days - Sick And Twisted Affair

I doubt if my top 10 would change.

My comment still stands true that there are a few modern rock bands whose output generally destroys the opposition - thinking Papa Roach, Hinder, Story Of The Year, Skillet etc - but there are a few which would warrant inclusion -

both Safetysuit's albums are excellent

As too are both of Destine's albums.

Also Destrophy's latest offering was awesome.

I reckon too that Papa Roach's new album in October will be the best modern release this year - I hope so in any case!!

Oh, probably not... Actually, definitely not. It's just that earlier in this thread you said you would give DramsGods a listen. I just wanted to know how that went.

So nothing in the past two years was impressive enough to infiltrate the top ten list?

So if I posted these.

American Heartbreak - Postcards From Hell & S\T

Romeos Dead - It's All Your Fault

Would those be able to be credited to this line of music? I mean if we really think about it, it is pretty much a modern style of music, with a modern sounding?? well sound, so do they count? if so, they fucking rock.

I'll have to give those a listen. Like I said, I'm so out of touch with the modern scene. 90 percent of the names dropped I've never even heard of, let alone heard from.

Tough to say unless I genuinely rated them all properly, but based on this top 10:

1. Cauterize - So far from real

2. Cauterize - Paper wings / Disguises (same album bar 4 and 1/2 tracks)

3. Yellowcard - Paper walls

4. A Change Of Pace - Prepare the masses

5. Silly Fools - The one

6. Hinder - Take it to the limit

7. SR-71 - here we go again

8. Boys Like Girls - Love drunk

9. Story of the Year - In the wake of determination

10. SR-71 - tomorrow

I could probably slot Trust Company - 'Silence in black and white' and Blessed By A Broken Heart - 'Feel The Power' at 9 and 10? Maybe...

I think Degreed must be infiltrating a few Top 30 lists. And Jonas & the Massive Attraction dropped a great album.

    • I posed him that exact question on his discord page as to what his future plans are.... He said he plans to relax for a bit, do his You Tube thing, keep writing new music and then will decide how to release that music.  He said as of now he's thinking he'll either do a solo thing or form his own band.  He didn't say this but I'd sort of envision a Daughtry type "band" where he kind of puts a band behind his name. So essentially, I think you're right on with his plans.  Ultimately, I think like you say, the control is a big part of it.  I think he wants to be able to operate on his own schedule to maintain his health and family obligations. It'll be interesting to see what sound the new material takes on.  It would seem logical to think it would be rock/melodic rock of some sort since that's really the type of music he's built his following with but he certainly has shown he can dabble anywhere from AOR to metal.
    • Glad I got to see them with Erik in front. All the best to him, definitely looking forward to his future outings when he is fully recovered. Would be cool to see him form his own band, where he could take control, and play around in different genres, from full on metal, to soothing AOR, the guy is so versatile.
    • Remedy - Crying Heart. One I've just seen thanks to the Iridium channel.  From the upcoming album. It's a Killer.
    • Let's not forget Benny Hill. What a Magnificent show that was.
    • Yeah... I dunno about that. It would be too cringe. Who knows? If I'm high enough, I might submit a video.
    • Yep great track and if you fancy being in the video for "The Feeling" nows your chance.
    • I'm proud to say that I had this single when I was a mere 8 years old. KISS were big down here then. Norman Gunston is Iconic for Aussies of my vintage.  The face ln the bottom left says it all. Hilarious.
    • All in all, this is a great story. Erik played a brilliant, well received, albeit short cameo with one of our favourite bands.  It was a win, win, win. A win for us, a win for Skid Row (the album certainly put them back on the map) and a win for Erik, adding this to his already impressive resume. The fact that it was so amicable with both parties is also great to see.
    • I really like this album - not every song on it but there are some surprisingly catchy melodies all over. Personally I think the singer adds great energy to the mix. It reminds me of the earlier Bai Bang ("closer to you")
