your 5 worst shows ever

I saw THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS last night at Wembley Arena and - despite them making my favourite disc of 2009 - they really rate very highly on my list of "Worst Shows Ever". Firstly the support band sucked (Street Drum Corps), secondly Leto simply cannot hold a tune in the live arena, and thirdly he's a stupid arrogant dick. His on-stage prancing is embarrassing and their renditions of the best tunes from their new album ("Kings & Queens", "Hurricane", and the awesome "Closer To The Edge") were all appalling. He never took the time to introduce the other band members, who are kept well in-the-shade, and he also urged the whole standing crowd to push forward to "feel the love" which ended up in a lot of people (mainly girls) being dragged over the barrier at the front by security having passed-out. Has put a real dampener on my enjoyment of a great album, plus the tickets were £55 each!

Jesus mate after reading that, your comments on FF sound even more mad.

Youre willing to pay £55 to see 30 Seconds To Mars (WTF!) but not £48.50 to see 7 awesome bands at FF..........

The mind boggles.

Well it was mainly for the missus really, bought as an Xmas present. But I did think they'd be better than they actually were.

And, yes I would pay £50 odd quid to see 7 awesome bands at FF, but sadly I've seen the line-up and I'd have to pay double-that and stay overnight (costing more) to actually see 7 awesome bands as they'd be spread over the 2 days....

Thankfully most of the bands I've seen over the years have been pretty good ... although numero uno on the "bad" list would be...

The Cult opening for Metallica in '89 -- Ian was drunk as a skunk onstage and kept blowing lyrics, stumbling around stage, finally he just gave up, laid on the drum riser, and half-heartedly mumbled into the mic.

Others:

Slaughter (opening for KISS on the HOT IN THE SHADE tour, 1990)... goddamn, I thought Mark Slaughter's voice was nasal and annoying on record, but hearing it echo through a thermo-nuclear P.A. system blasting it around Madison Square Garden was more than I could handle. Winger were up next and even though I never liked Winger much either they blew Slaughter off the stage without even breakin' a sweat.

Dangerous Toys - Great band on album, but a disappointing live band. This was on the Operation Rock N Roll tour in 1991 and their first mistake at such a metal-intensive show (the other bands on the bill were Judas Priest, Metal Church, Motorhead and Alice Cooper) was coming out and opening with the lightweight "Sport'N A Woody" rather than one of their heavier songs. The crowd pretty much tore them a new ass for the rest of their set. I actually felt sorry for them, it was freakin' brutal. The biggest ovation they got was after they slunk off stage and their backdrop/banner was replaced by Motorhead's, who were up next.

Murder One - local NJ punk band with a few albums out, that inexplicably got put on the bill opening for Savatage when I saw them in 1996. Needless to say, the Savatage crowd did not welcome them warmly and things got ugly very quickly. Their singer kept being a snotty punk-rock dickhead (answering chants of "SAVATAGE! SAVATAGE!" with "We're not Savatage, ya fuckin' idiots"), until finally he dropped his pants and started waving his prick at the crowd. Thankfully, one of the bouncers quickly escorted him offstage.

Trivium opening for Iron Maiden on the '08 SOMEWHERE BACK IN TIME tour -- dunno why these guys get so much love, I thought they were boring as hell. It was somewhat telling that the venue was less than half full while they were on, and the thunderstorm that came thru the area after they left the stage got more applause than they did.

I really like TRIVIUM live. I actually thought they were better (certainly technically) than both Maiden and Metallica who I saw them support early on, and fared-well supporting both MACHINE HEAD and LAMB OF GOD (there are no 2 better bands on the live Metal circuit than these). I'm going again in mid-March to see them for the second time on this tour (the first was in Vegas in October) and my 7th time overall. To be fair it's as much to do with the quality bands they bring with them now their headliners, as their own live performance, but count me as a fan!

Trivium were fighting an uphill battle opening for Maiden. The audience pretty much treated them as an obstacle to be tolerated until Maiden got onstage.

POISON - saw them live twice a few years back only because CINDERELLA was the opener both times & my sister wanted to go. I'm not a huge fan of Poison although I do love the debut album so I thought they might be good live...wow was I wrong! CINDERELLA kicked ass & sounded excellent but when Bret & the boys came out it was a muddled mess! They started with "LOOK WHAT THE CAT DRAGGED IN" & I couldn't make out what song it was till they got to the chorus & it got worse from there...and it was like that both times :yikes:

PRINCE - Now I like this guy but live it was the most boring concert I've been to. Actually dozed off during the show...too many medleys of the good songs especially "WHEN DOVES CRY" which is my favorite...He started playing the intro & then went into another song!! I was so pissed!!

Well, after the weekend I can definitely add Janes Addiction to this list. Got stuck watching them very much against my wishes, and rightly so. Absolutely f*cking terrible.

Jane's Addiction = a complete waste of studio time. That band was better suited cleaning toilets at the venue rather than ever being on stage at one.

bro, not that i care about trivium, m.head, LoG and other forgetable ones, but what did you expect from them? they're maiden fans... :axe:

back on topic: crappy gigs were the ones that i had to pay full price ticket just to see the support groups(which in many cases don't have other chances to book a gig, at least back then).....for example: crush/armored saint, crush/holocaust(i wanted to see holocaust performing their immortal tunes, but mortimer was fekking drunk. so fekk him one thousand times. still of course he was better than listening to their hymn by kai hansen! even though he didn't sing anything when they played HMM for 3rd time in row...), spitfire/iron maiden(at least from that gig i still remember 10000+ people shouting like maniacs SPITFIRE!SPITFIRE!SPITFIRE!) etc etc etc....

also having to suffer from sodom(even though probably the only thrash/pank band i can still listen to a couple of their agent orange tunes), immortal, r.christ in a row, just to listen to some crappy nowadays manowar was a traumatic experience. metal united my fekking arze.

and then venom playing before virgin steele(hehehehe). these cronos' bass "solos"(lord give mercy on them) were enough a reason for delay that left VS without one encore. and emalaith/victory is mine were the ones i misssed, if memory serves me well...

Guest Night

All shows which I have visited were good though I still don't like and can't understand big concerts with crowd. If you are not just near the stage you don't see musicians! What to do there? Just listen to the music? But we can do this at home even better.

I'll probably be shot or hung for this, but back in the day, I was never impressed with Dokken (I saw them on the Tooth And Nail, Under Lock And Key, and Back For The Attack tours). The band itself kicked ass, but I always thought Don Dokken sucked live as an front man. It wasn't the vocals, but it was just his stage presence. And I was in the few front rows at a few of the shows so it wasn't the fact that I had crappy seats.

I can honestly say I have never seen what I would consider a bad show. I saw Metallica at Earl's Court about 10 years ago and while they were good, their egos are just ridiculous and really piss me off, so maybe that would be the worst. Lars Ulrich seems to think he's some sort of Drum God, but I'd rather watch New Kids than another drum solo.

I've seen Metallica quite a few times, but never were they better than with Joey Jordison (Slipknot) on drums. Not suggesting Jordison is the greatest drum technician but the difference in the rest of the band (particularly in the tempo of their early/fast songs) was very noticeable, simply by having a drummer that can actually keep-time.

I've heard that from someone else too. Great to see that the tiny man with the enormous ego is irreplaceable! ;)

Well yeah, I mean it's hard to deny he isn't a hugely talented guy - as he is so multi-talented (writing, producing etc) & was the driving force behind the band - but he really isn't a particularly good drummer IMO.
