The pre-chorus and chorus are just stupid beyond belief....

Sucky fucky x3

Smells Like Sushi

Asian Hooker

Hot Little Motherfucker

Asian Hooker

Dirty Little Cocksucker

Under what stretch of the imagination is that genius? Maybe to the scriptwriters that wrote the 4th and 5th AMERICAN PIE films?

''What shall we rhyme with Asian Hooker''... Errr I know! how about Mother Fucker or Cock Sucker. Genius sheer genius ;)

Youve got to admit though that the whole structure of the song IS genius.

And even if the chorus is simple it sticks in your head like glue..........

Sorry mate, it's not memorable enough for me - I had to Google the lyrics!

Fair play, it is one of the better songs. Do you think we've debated this one enough now?

Okay, it has to be done. Here are some random Fair Warning lyrics from 'I Fight' (pick any others if this isn't a good example):

Looking for another way

Trouble's down the street

The sky's on fire - I'm moving on

I got to face the heat

I fight - when silence breaks at night

I fight - no mercy in these eyes

And if my love is strong enough,

I got to break this pride -

I fight - I fight...

Aside from there being more words, how is that honestly any more well crafted than what Steel Panther have done? If anything, I would yawn and drift off listening to stuff like this, but no one can say that 'Asian Hooker' does not kick your ass.

I just think you guys are being way too critical whilst not really having any ammunition. No, their lyrics are not genius (though they're the ones I've been most impressed with in a long while because they go where others don't), but again... what is that you listen to? Nothing. We just have to accept that Steel Panther have written some different to the norm lyrics that the soft at skin seem disappointed with, but for those with a good sense of humour and a desire for excellent songs they're a godsend.

And by the way, if singing about wrapping your penis up to look like a sushi roll in order to entice asian blowjobs is not the work of pure genius, fuck me if I know what is.

I've put the question out there several times now and still had no reply as to what makes these lyrics inferior to the rest of the lyrics in the music we listen to.

Listened to this one a few more times today, so two (more) cents...

Musically, the album is top notch. There are some riffs on this thing that any "real" band would kill for. Production is spotless and you can tell these guys have really studied the bands that they're paying homage to. The little nods to Van Halen, Def Leppard, Yngwie, Extreme, etc. are spot-on.

Lyrically...ehhhh, okay, it's funny as hell on the first spin but it starts to get old after a few listens.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not offended and I'm not one to complain about potty humor. (I've been listening to the Mentors for goin' on twenty-five years, for Chrissake. By the way, their lyrics make Steel Panther's sound like Dr Seuss in terms of scatology and gross-out factor, haha..) But these guys' lyrics are strictly a one-joke thing, recycling the same gags (pun intended) in every song. By the sixth or seventh "lick my balls," "shoot my load on your face" or V.D. reference I was rolling my eyes like "Again? Come on guys, mix it up a little."

That said - "Asian Hooker" is a scream, as are "Fat Girl" (love the Def Leppard style "Whooa-ooooh's" in that one, I damn near drove off the road when I first heard that one, I was crackin up so hard) and "Turn Out The Lights."

All in all, good enough to get a conditional thumbs-up from me, but I wish the lyrics weren't quite so Beavis & Butt-head.

By the way, I wouldn't want to be in this band's shoes when they come offstage some night and 50 Cent and his posse are in their dressing room with their Glocks drawn, and 50 sez "Yo, you tha muthafuggas sayin' me an' Kanye is gay?" :bigboom:

Steel Panther - Bow at the alter and lick the boots of David St. Hubbins. ;)

:rofl2:

Yeah, there is a definite theme to the album which may not be for all, but I personally do not tire of it. :) As Glen said, one of his least favourite songs is 'Hell's On Fire' because it isn't as messed up as the rest and he was disappointed. It's one of my personal faves because lyrics aside it's one of the album's best tunes, imo, but I too like hearing the real rawkus lyrics.

Anyway, I still don't think there are any more songs about licking balls than there are love/girl/relationship songs on your average rock CD.

There is no doubt that people can take easy potshots at this, but if you reverse every negative comment around you can probably say the same thing about anyone here's favourite bands. ;)

PS. Glad to see 'Turn out the lights' mentioned too. When it drops into that 'Turn out the lights, before you suck my dick, someone beat you with an ugly stick...' it is a tirade of f*ckling hilarity!

I knew you'd come around. ;) In all honesty, if you wrote the musical blueprint for the verses to the perfect melodic hard rock song you couldn't do much better than 'Hell's on fire'. Just stunning, imo, and what I hope for from music everytime I put a new CD in the player.

This got off track ;) Obviously this CD has people buzzing and to be honest I think anything that draws attention to this type of music is great.

Some other parody albums - some mentioned above - agreed, I love Tenacious D. If people haven't given these 2 CDs a chance you are missing out. First one is much better IMO but there is so much power and melody that simply cannot be denied on these CDs.

Also, no one mentioned Big Cock who now have 3CDs out.

My 2c on the lyrics debate.

Personally I could care less about what they are singing about as long as the vocals sell the song, have melody etc.

On the flipside I do get that these lyrics could be written by a 12 year old. There are some bands that do double entendre very well. Bon Scott used to write awesome lyrics and if you compare Community Property with Big Cock's Hard To Swallow there is no denying who is more clever.

But at the end of the day - a good song is a good song!

I think one part of the "joke" that a lot of people don't seem to have taken on board is the fact that I have not a single doubt in my mind that these guys could write more subtle tongue-in-cheek lyrics... if they wanted to. But I think a huge part of the joke here is that they've purposely not gone this route.

This isn't aimed at you at all Dahun, just a general comment. But the thing that disappoints me most is that people are saying, in so many words, that they're not comfortable with a band doing something a little different, and that for this band to appeal to them they'd have to sound like everyone else and produce cliche and heard-it-all before lyrics that you can find on any CD any day of the week.

I'm glad there are still plenty of people enjoying this, but also disappointed to see that so many fans of this music would rather another dime-a-dozen release as opposed to something that kicks a recently tiring genre in the balls a little.

Sorry mate, putting juvenile lyrics over the top of 80's Hair Metal does not an innovative band make. Stuff like MARCELLO VESTRY/FARCRY/BROTHER FIRETRIBE/PLACE VENDOME is what's really kicking this genre in the balls. People who take their music seriously and write albums people will still be playing in 6 months/1 years time. True there might be some pretty fucking awful/generic lyrics on albums like BFT/PLACE VENDOME, but at least they don't make me cringe and avoid playing the albums in front of anyone else through sheer embarrassment...

Perfect summation TIM - EXACTLY my thoughts. Steel Panther are doing nothing new whatsoever musically (unless you missed it the first time around I suppose) or anything else as people have already said, hence why they are called a 'Parody', so going down the 'Originality' and something 'Different' route certainly doesn't wash to well . Hell, I would love more originality in music and lyrics in general, which is why I listen to other genres of music sometimes in the vain hope, but these guys certainly aren't it. It wasn't that inventive the first time around when they did the 'Comedy Metal' thing and there was hardly a flicker of interest from anyone,no record company would touch them with yours back in the late 90's early 00's, so what makes them 'Different and original' now. For now they have their place in their own little 'Niche' and good luck to them, but they seriously won't last very long doing what they are doing and all the bands TIM mentions above (and more) will still be releasing the proper 'Serious' stuff long after they are an after thought for many.

The quality of some releases over the last few years in the MR/AOR genre especially, has been really high and bands continue to release very good albums at regular intervals, so the recent 'tiring genre' you mention has me scratching my head somewhat aswell to be honest.

I agree - I'd be surprised even if they release another album under the banner of Steel Panther. As you say this stuff only has a certain longevity. But what we do have here is a pretty monster album chock full of brilliant riffs, excellent musicianship and some pretty funny lyrics.

Its easily the best 'parody' album ive heard (as ive said before its easy for this type of album to be done very very badly - take Scrap Mettle...that is complete shite in comparison).

To be honest, for them to release another album with songs of this quality would be a pretty tall ask and there's only so many songs that can be written on said subjects...and theyve pretty much covered them all on this here disc.

This is never going to top the more serious contenders for me - as Tim says the BFs and Place Vendomes of this world are better and hence why its sat as No 5 for me in my 2009 list....but it sure as hell beats the shit out of most other releases this year.

Cheers

For the record, I also don't think there will be a second Steel Panther album. I hope to f*ck I'm wrong and there's 10 more (They HAVE to get 'Big Boobs' out to the masses), but I don't see it. What that has to do with the quality of this release is anyone's guess, though. :)

I'm not saying they're that different and original myself (only to make my point). I've put them at the top of my list this year with "regular" bands, I play it often and love each spin, I don't see the difference between liking this and Danger Danger or Motley Crue - they're just another killer melodic hard rock band. That's what I've said all along. But I don't get you guys. On one hand you're saying they're doing nothing new, and on the other hand you're saying you don't like them because no one's ever been as blatant and pornographic in their lyrics, even for a parody album.

It's you guys hung up on the lyrical content letting it prevent you from liking this that are telling me it's so different from the rest of the pack. My point all along has been that this is just an album full of excellent songs. Nothing more, nothing less. If you're going to let the lyrics get in the way of you enjoying this then you're creating a barricade that people more interested in the music at hand have not created for themselves. :)

One thing has to be said, they play great gigs - they always draw a crowd and they know how to milk any celebrity that gets anywhere near them. They have created their own buzz and managed to get a label deal because of it. I think they have a better chance of bringing a larger audience to this style of music then all the serious bands out there whom can only be found on little labels that you have to search out, no radio play or videos.

They have gotten noticed, sure it took them some time but these days you only have 15mins to cash in.

Agreed Geoff - they don't want to sing clever lyrics and they know what they are targeting - can't help thinking not so drunk Chris Holmes in the late 80s ;)

Still with a song like Hard to Swallow by Big Cock you can play it with the in-laws around and they have no idea it's about swallowing cum :)

Cheers,

John

To cut to the chase I guess what I'm saying about the lyrics is that they're shit. Plain and simple. Embarrassing garbage. Yes they do get in the way of the good music because I cringe every time I hear them. Sure this is better than Skrapp Mettle/Tenacious D & most other parody bands, but this is still a joke band with a focus on comedy that just isn't funny/big or clever IMO. A great live band that's wasting their talent producing joke material & getting way too much hype for it.

Anyone who thinks this is a 'masterpiece' needs to get out more & hear some real music.

Well I think its pretty close to a masterpiece and if my ears hear anymore music on a daily basis theyre likely to implode.

Although I agree I do need to get out more..........twins = no beer.

Good musicians and the only thing original about them is their cheesey porn lyrics which like TIM (2) said: Embarrassing garbage. They do get in the way of good music.

I will not listen to them on a regular basis since they are a joke/parody band. A joke band to me is ALMOST in the same category of a cover band since they're not real bands/music in my opinion (serious bands). Steel Panther borrows 80's hair bands riffs of old. Even if they didn't have the porn lyrics, the songs that are copycats of other bands would be unworthy of listening too. The porn lyrics is what's saving this band now and their only appeal. If they would make new songs without copying 80's hair bands melodies and ditch the porn lyrics then they would be an original and probably good original hard rock/hair band. I mean a little bit of sillyness thrown in here and there would be ok - the real hair bands threw it in occassionaly but every single song about raunchy porn lyrics is not my cup of tea. I think maybe they knew to get attention they needed an over the top gimmick. Like others said, if they were a serious band they wouldn't be getting quite as much attention as they are now. So they got their attention/buzz but it will soon wear off - probably a few months after their CD is released in the U.S. if not sooner. I could be wrong though and Steel Panther could take over the world!! Hahaha, not likely.
