no disappoinments at all Geoff?

surely there was something that has let you down...

Haha... I put that comment there and then deleted. But because you asked, these are a few:

Mike Tramp - Rock n' roll circuz ; I know, I know. The guy sucks but I still hope someday he'll deliver again. This started out okay and I thought we were onto something. But we weren't. More crap. :(

Nasty Idols - Boys town ; A good album don't get me wrong, with a couple of gems. But man this is just not holding up to repeated listens at all!

Europe - Last look at eden ; I honestly thought this sounded okay first spin, but honestly most of it is impossible to actuallyl listen to.

Sanction X - The last day ; A solid CD but with guys from Frontline on board I hoped this'd be excellent... but it's not.

Lynch Mob - Smoke and mirrors ; one amazing song, a whole album's worth of disappointments.

Great White - Rising ; I'd have to say this is the first time these guys have really disappointed me. This album, sadly, is just really weak.

Lillian Axe - Sad day on planet earth ; I know they suck these days, but I still hope. This is just terrible.

Bulletboys - 10cc Billionaire ; Another band I still had hope for - rubbish.

Lita Ford - Wicked wonderland ; as noted everywhere, possibly the worst CD I have heard in my life.

Paramore - Brand new eyes ; very disappointing CD. Not awful and the best of this lot, but I expected a lot from these guys.

Totally agree with Nasty Idols... a few great songs but as a whole it just doesn't do it for me.

Bulletboys, I gave up on quite a while ago, and after reading reviews of this one i don't think things have changed there. Don't think i've heard one positive thing on this disc, or their last couple. I like their first 3 discs, but my Bulletboys collection will end there.

Innocent Rosie released a live album too which is not the greatest. Couldn't sit through that one in it's entirety. The sound is quite flat.

The 'Bad habit romance' CD from Innocent Rosie is one that may still change positions, although definitely not in a positive way. I did really like the way it was going but it really seemed to fall flat on it's ass in the second half... almost a different style. Will need to spend more time with it, but it didn't have me sold.

I don't get the dissapointment with this disc as I think it kicks butt.

There is 3 just so so songs IMO but the rest is very good but I guess it comes down to what you like.

Even though you like the album you would have to admit that the actual style of the album is very different to the first two. Obviously compared to 'Smoke this' it's amazing, and it's seriously not even a bad album. Just not the kind I could enjoy.

I would never say it was the same style as the first two but I still like it and yeah compared to 'Smoke This' this is a all time great disc.

I'll answer three posts (and no worries mate, keep the replies coming! That's what the lists are for, I guess) but one statement will cover them all. A few comments like 'why is that so far back at 13 or 21'? Dudes, as I said, there are 70 CDs in both my modern and MHR lists that I like. Positions of 13 and 21 are huge and mean I LOVE the discs.

Anyway, to answer specifically:

1. Winger - LOVE that disc. But I just like 13 excellent albums better. Seriously mate, I don't see 13 as poor positioning at all. It's killer... just preceeded by other killers.

2. Again, Gotthard at 21 is no disrespect. If anything, I think it's high for the quality of the CD. It is good, but imo nowhere near as good as 'Domino Effect' or even 'Lipservice'. Good, solid disc but there are a lot of better MHR albums than it this year. At least 20 of them, maybe more.

3. Poodles and Firenote - that could go either way. Both pretty good CDs.

4. As for The Trophy over Lima... 10 times over would I make that pick! IMO this Trophy disc is Bormann's best post-JH disc and really grows with each listen. Like all his other CDs, LIma's gets worse with every spin. The Trophy has been a quiet surprise for me this year.

5. Halestorm starts out amazing and if it had stayed that good it'd be higher. Still love the disc, but it definitely trails off in the second half. As I said, 24 is an excellent position.

6. Again, I really dig the Silverstein disc... very consisten. Just doesn't have the songs to compete with any of the better CDs this year though.

7. Pound - about 5 really excellent songs... but when these guys are good they're great and when they're bad they're awful. There is some pure shithouse grunge on that CD which really, really turns me off.

Is noone enjoying Places of Power?? i Nearly didnt buy it, but its my most played album lately.

I definitely did !!

Solid, but tires with every spin. Not a bad disc but it just seems to drag for me.

Not much love for my fave Modern disc of the year either - ATREYU. That Monty Are I band are massively overrated & pretty dull IMO....

Atreyu is one CD that will probably move. Only spun it once or twice so that's a work in progress. I dare say it's got places to climb. I heard the Venture CD last night and that climbed 10-15 spots... so these lists are still very much work in progresses.

Monty and I over-rated? By who? Killer band, killer CD.

I didn't even realise Pound wasn't in the top 50! FYI, here's the next 30. Obviously it gets a bit loose this far up, but it's the general order I'd rank them:

51 . Madina Lake - Attics to eden

52 . American Radio - s/t

53 . Juke Kartel - Nowhere left to hide

54 . Tokio Hotel - Humanoid

55 . Social Code - Rock n' roll

56 . SocietyRed - s/t

57 . Dead Season - Life death

58 . Thriving Ivory - s/t

59 . State of Man - In this place

60 . Down From Up - From ashes to empire

61 . Hurricane Cletis - Awake today

62 . Three Days Grace - Life starts now

63 . Tinted Windows - s/t

64 . My Favourite Highway - How to call a bluff

65 . Shelflyfe - s/t

66 . Pound - Stardust, Lies and Holy water

67 . Sugar Red Drive -s/t

68 . Ten Second Epic - Hometown

69 . Breaking Benjamin - Dear agony

70 . Mariana's Trench - Masterpeice Theatre

71 . Evans Blue - s/t

72 . Creed - s/t

73 . Bulletproof Messenger - Arm yourself

74 . Burning Borders - Yesterday's gone

75 . Damone - Roll the dice

76 . Craving Lucy - Therapy

77 . Papercut Massacre - If these scars could talk

78 . Nevertheless - In the making

79 . New Found Glory - Not without a fight

80 . Hoobastank - For(n)ever

To be honest, that Hoobastank CD is their best yet and I seriously don't mind it. As Wes and I commented on elsewhere, I have never seen a year come anywhere near 2009 in terms of the amount of good releases. It's truly amazing. Usually my list drops off around the 20 mark in terms of quality. To still be good at the 80 mark is off the charts!

Okay, I admit that Society Red album looks well out of place and must be suffering from "haven't heard it enough" syndrome, but I'm completely at peace with the other two. As I said, some killer songs on the Pound CD but as many truly dreadful ones. To be honest, could still move up the list, but the bad tracks on that CD are a real dampener.

As for Bulletproof Messenger... mate, they have completely done their dash with me. This album just bores me to tears bar that one excellent song I mentioned right from the start. The rest is just so painfully average, imo.

Mmm, have to disagree with BM. There are at least 4 or 5 excellent songs on that disc....a few filler i'll admit. As for dismissing them as a band, the debut is still absolutely awesome to these ears....at least 10 killer tracks, and as discussed in another thread about longevity.. the debut is an album I come back to time and time again!

I'm spending the next 3 weeks refreshing myself on all the 2009 releases I have bought, before I come up with my final list. It will be bloody hard getting them in some order I know that much, but I will succeed, oh yes, I will succeed. ;)

1 . Monty Are I - Break through the silence

2 . The Sunstreak - Once upon a lie

3 . Fallbrooke - s/t

4 . No Love Lost - s/t

5 . Boys Like Girls - Love drunk

Like Jez mentions above, at the moment I'm giving the 2009 releases some real attention. I've said a few times that the year has been pretty slow for modern rock, but I'm starting to think it's just because I haven't given myself the time to get really familiar with many releases because there are so many. Now that I'm sitting back and repeatedly spinning some of the better releases I have to say that this top 5 here is almost inseperable. Each time I hear one I think it's the best of the year, then I hear another and I think that is and it's a vicious circle. Whatever the case, these 5 are no doubt the best 5 modern rock CDs of the year and any year featuring any single one of these at the top spot would be a hell of a year for me. Monty Are I is still holding onto the spot as the CD is just brilliant, and 'Making sounds' is probably my favourite song of the year... but I think Boys Like Girls is in 2nd spot at the moment. I think...

I hope to have my list locked in by mid January when I return to civilization.

I know what you mean..........ive said all along that its been a strong year for modern rock. My picks for the top spots would be different, but still a great year imo.

Have you heard Boys Like Girls and The Sunstreak yet? I'd be interested to hear what you think. They're number 2 and 3 for me at the moment and No Love Lost and Fallbrooke have settled into 4 and 5 respectively.

I don't think it's been a fantastic year for Modern Rock at all. This year desperately needed a new STORY OF THE YEAR album as they're the best thing in this genre. As a result, ATREYU and CREED have topped my Modern Rock list....

Ive not heard either of those.

However I highly doubt they will even hold a light to Skillet or Monty Are I.

I may be wrong though so i will spotify this week.

Cheers

Sorry mate, I'm so bored of that MONTY ARE I -type sound, it's all been done before so many times and I can't get excited about that stuff anymore. I have the previous disc by that band and it's nothing short of rubbish. The Skillet is a very strong disc, but it still has some filler IMO....

Don't bash the new Monty Are I without hearing it, it's fantastic. But I agree 2009 was not a very good year for Modern Rock.

The only ones that have a chance of beeing in my top 15 at the end of the year are Monthy Are I - Break Through The Silence and Heaven Below - Countdown To Devil.
