Saw Soundgarden and Black Sabbath last Friday.

Loved Soundgarden. Still for the life of me can't see the attraction of Sabbath.

I agree with you when it comes to Sabbath - as much as I love the 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' album, I've never understood the fanboy devotion that the Ozzy-fronted lineup inspires ...

Saw Vain in Edinburgh by luck last week. Happened to be there on business and saw they were playing. Nice as I saw them first UK tour and now I got to see them on probably their last .

Great fun and had the added bonus that I think I can say I'm ageing way better than an 80s sex icon.

Fanboy devotion? You might as well say that about anyone who likes any band.

Simple fact is while I wouldnt call myself a mental fan, Ozzy fronted Sabbath was great and the only Sabbath for me. Heaven and hell was a good album, but sounded nothing like Sabbath. The rest of their career with whatever singer, just never sounded like Sabbath. Also at the time they came out, their sound was truly unique.

Master of reality was my proper introduction to the band, and considering my influences were the likes of Poison and Guns N Roses etc, there was no reason I should have liked them, but I loved that album. If that makes me a fanboy, then so be it.

A bunch of shows in British Columbia in August.

Sturgis Motorcycle Music Festival is coming to Canada this year. August 21-24. Some bands I really, really want to see, but they're spread over the four days, and it's $310 for a four day pass, or $90 per each day. Get the fuck outta here!! Still, if you have the money, these are the main players.

August 21: Alias, Coney Hatch, Teenage Head, Alkatine

August 22: Katey Sagal & the Forest Rangers, Canned Heat, Nick Gilder & Sweeney Todd. Killer Dwarfs

August 23: Burton Cummings, Molly Hatchet, Moxy, Jasmine Cain

August 24: The Stampeders, Jerry Doucette, The Carpet Frogs, Franklin's Dealers

If they had put Alias, Coney Hatch, Canned Heat, Killer Dwarfs, Burton Cummings, and Molly Hatchet on the same day, I'd have paid $90 already.

And Summer Night Concerts at the PNE has a great collection of artists for music-lovers, but here are the ones that most of you would appreciate.

August 17: Joan Jett & the Blackhearts

August 19: Chilliwack

August 20: Air Supply

August 22: Trooper

September 1: Glass Tiger

I'll be on my way home from Seattle September 1, but I might try to see Glass Tiger.

I've got a very busy few months coming up with Earth, Wind & Fire on August 22; Great White and Slaughter September 6; Anthony Hamilton September 13; Temptations October 3; Betty Who, Joywave, and Great Good Fine OK October 25; St. Lucia November 2; Smallpools and Magic Man November 25; so I have to see what I can do.

By 'fanboy devotion', I mean the people who blindly worship everything put out under the 'Sabbath-with-Ozzy' banner (I agree that the same could be said for any band) ... I like a lot of the Ozzy-fronted material, but I don't automatically start dribbling the minute the 'classic' line-up is mentioned.

wow really......Heaven & Hell & Mob Rules are the only 2 'Sabbath' albums I really like........light years ahead of the Ozzy stuff.

All down to personal taste I guess.

But they sound nothing like Sabbath.

Its the same with Van Halen. As much as I like the Hagar stuff, it just doesnt sound like Van Halen.

Both times the bands changed musical style as well as vocalists.

And as for Dio, he had a great voice, but his songs just never did much for me beyond the odd track here of there.

thing is though, most fans want the classics. I'd say the set was a good mix between new and old.

a bit more Pull would have been nice, and he even mentioned that someone always asks for Battlestations, but maybe next time ... if people always ask, why not THIS time?

If you exclude solos, it was:
1 cover song
2 from Better days
3 from Karma
3 from In the heart
4 from debut
2 from Pull
0 from IV
Not a bad mix, and thats a third of the set from the last two albums.

easily my favourite Winger song.

was talking about it with Ben Christo of Night By Night/Sisters Of Mercy a few weeks ago, and we both agreed on it being Wingers finest moment, which led to him playing it at Decadence club that night ha ha

Anthony Hamilton last night in Tacoma. That was a great show. I don't know how many of you listen to Soul, but a good performance is a good performance.

Great White and Slaughter in a couple hours.

How was it? Seeing them at the local casino in October. Mark Slaughter's vocals aren't what they used to be and that's putting it politely but he sounds great on his solo track Never Giving Up.

I've seen Slaughter twice this year, and they were great both times. Great White was solid, too. I know it's not Jack Russell and the new album wasn't so well-received, but Terry Ilous has a great voice, and they stick to the classics, save one track from Elation. Slaughter was still the highlight, though.

I haven't seen Overkill in 20 years and I last saw Prong in 1991... this is gonna be like my senior year of college all over again! Hopefully there will be less vomiting this time around. :rofl2:

we saw Sonata Arctica, Delain, Xandria, & Insatia last nite at a club red in Mesa. nearly 5 hours of symphonic powermetal for $25. best fucking show ever

so awesome to have a small venue (holds 500 at best?) with great fucking accoustics so close to home. this band lineup for this place looks to be 90% metal.

almost made me forget that we were still living in the middle of suckingthefuckingjesusknobville

i dont know about you guys,, but this beats vixen back in high school hands down (no puns intended)

Off to see Orphaned Land (again) next month (with JamesEagle) ... they were brilliant last time, and they'll apparently be playing the whole of 'Mabool' this time around :)
