I have this sitting in my car ready to go, along with the new Edguy CD. I will probably spin them on the weekend if I drive the three and a half hours up the coast to see my brother, but at the moment I am just not excited enough to spin either yet. Still trying to sort out what to put on my Ipod from the other discs this year.

 

I will say, though, that I could find an EP's worth of good songs on the two 'Use Your Illusion' discs and not much more... so not sure what I'll think of this one.

I just don't get the furor over this thing finally being released. The guy has dicked around his followers for years and years, yet some still insist upon following him blindly like sheep. How anyone can still claim this is Guns N' Roses anyway is a mystery for the ages. For a band that wasn't going anywhere without the help of MTV, I remain mystified as to why some people refer to this act as the "greatest band ever". How many albums did they put out? A handful? Challengers for that greatest band handle all have longevity; not a tumultuous few years and then the notoriety of one large ego grabbing the moniker for himself and fucking over fans by holding a projected album's release over their heads. I was never a big fan - a couple of songs are all I can stand, and there's no fucking way I would even give this release a perfunctory listen; I'm just that sick and tired of all the hype and bullshit being generated. So Mr. Rusty-Hinge Voice has finally decided to grace the music world with his presence again. Big fucking deal!

I wouldn't say only 1 album was good. "Lies" was great and there are some killer tunes on both "Use Your Illusion" discs.

Appetite is simply the best debut ever made, Lies is an excellent acoustic "live" record and Use Your Illusion is my favourite GnR Album(s), how you can not like it baffles me, there are some really excellent hard rock songs on there, a sound that can never be replicated because its so unique...

 

Back Off Bitch, Dont Damn Me, Dont Cry, Locomotive, Coma, 14 Years, You Could Be Mine, November Rain, Yesterdays, Civil War, Pretty Tied Up, Live and Let Die, Perfect Crime, Get In The Ring, Right Next Door Hell, Double Talkin Jive, Garden Of Eden etc...

 

the first shit album they released was the last album they released, and even that had a couple of decent tracks on it...

they only put out 2 studio albums and an EP, yet 5 year old kids listen to them right up to 70 year old adults....thats pretty decent...

If you're going to use that argument should we all pick up Eminem's latest albums, or Justin Timberlake, Robbie Williams and Beyonce or whoever is selling their shit by the bucketloads at the moment? Record sales mean absolutely zero with regard to the quality of a band/artist. Guns N' Roses got lucky - pure and simple as that.

 

I do believe 'Appetite for Destruction' is a really, really excellent album but 'Lies' is just pointless drivel to me, and as I've said many times before I could get an EP or maybe one full good album of material out of the 'Use Your Illusion' discs... and of course the 'Spaghetti' album is just shit. Not much there to rave about.

And it's no secret that the band was going nowhere, selling very little until MTV began promoting the hell out of their videos. THAT'S when they began going into the stratosphere. The same thing applied to Duran Duran in the early 80's; without video play, they'd have disappeared entirely. Could Guns N' Roses have made it without that help? Possibly, but it can't be ignored that record sales were average before that media push began.

well its all my opinion, obviously....but no i dont think they can, when i was playing in the GnR trbiute a few months ago i broke down their songs and tried to figure out what made them so unique..

 

my fave bands are Bon Jovi, GnR, Motley Crue and SKid Row, Bon Jovi have Blue Tears, Skid Row have Sven Gali, Motley crue have soundalikes like some of the Southgang stuff but ive never heard a band that has that "sound" that GnR had

Really like early GnR alot and AFD was damn solid in a world full of make up wearing bandwagon jumpers.Axl was the real deal early on but like alot of musicians who get fame and fortune that fast they just burn out/sell out and get lazy.Damn if they weren't hungry on that first record and you can hear it in the attitude..i grew up about 50 miles from where Axl and Izzy did in West Lafayette,IN and he had the drive to get out of that shithole and head west and i salute him for that.

Just want to make very clear that none of the band members and what I think of them or what they do have any even remote influence on what I think of their music. One of my biggest pet hates is people disliking music for every other ounce of shit reason other than the actual songs. My comments, as always, are based purely on the fact that I don't think they have many good songs.

ah, well i havent been able to listen to that album for about 2 years now, same with Slippery When Wet, i wore it out...

 

the problem is that when you learn to play a whole album on guitar as ive done with those two, it makes listening to it almost unbearable....i can never just listen to a song that ive had to learn for enjoyment
