I don't really care if anybody besides Mullethead and Myself like this record or not.

Is it classic GNR? Hell No! Is It a Crappy Release? Hell NO! It's a great release.

I view it as a AXL solo release, though AXL doesn't. Could it have been better

with the original line? Don't know and never will. Sorry to say, but I think it's

a release that no matter HOW good it is, there will be those who just won't like

it anyway, and that's fine with me. If you don't like it more power to you,

if you do like it great.

Yeah, I feel the same way. A lot of people are missing out on a great album. I actually think the playing is better on this album than any with the original. They are two different bands really.

I agree that they are two different bands but using the GNR name no matter what they do will always get compared to the classic lineup.

Again I like it but not near as much as the old stuff, which I hold in very high regard.

I could combine those albums and make one kick ass album but they are full of filler. I love the edge & rawness of Spaghetti...

I can honestly say I have never seen that point of view before, mate. But come to think of it, I've never seen anyone question the production job on 'Hear!' too, so I shouldn't be surprised. ;)

That's an odd list, mate. I agree 100% that you could get a 10 track CD worth of good songs from the 'Use Your Illusion' discs and scrap the rest, but seriously, despite how filler-packed they are, they still crucify 'Spaghetti Head' and 'Lies', which are two terrible albums - plain and simple, imo. Scattered good songs is still better than albums completely void of good songs.

To be honest, GNR have such a shit discography I'd probably put 'Chinese Democracy' in at 4 behind (obviously) 'Appetite...' and the 2 UYI discs. But seriously, what a poor discography.

By the way...how did this album do sales wise....was it considered a flop or did it sell boatloads? Apparently it had pretty dismal first week sales compared to what was expected but a lot of the blame seems to be laid on Wal-Marts lack of promotion for the album??

Did it rally afterwards or what?

It was Best Buy that sold it not Wal-Mart and that's part of the problem.

It was Axl that didn't do any promotion at all as of now even though he says promo, a tour and a video is coming but he's been saying that for months. If Wal-Mart would of sold it would of sold 3 times as many. The problem with Best Buy is that they aren't in every town like Wal-Mart is. For this are the closest Best Buy is 2 1/2 hours away! I actually ordered the GNR online so I wouldn't have make the drive. I think the album is certified platinum but I don't think it's sold that many copies but has only shipped that many. Best Buy was guaranteed the first 2 million copies but I'm not sure where that stands now.

It sold well considering just album sales in this day & age but it's being compared to how long it took to make it....in that regards no it did not sell well.

You have to treat that album as a covers album which I normally do not like but this one is quite good & has a ton of attitude. As for Hear I'd rather listen to nails across a chalkboard....it would sound better. :nyanya:

  • 4 months later...

A year later and I still don't really know where I stand with this one. To be honest, I find listening to it to be a burden... a pain in the ass.

It isn't that bad an album, but it just has no appeal to make me want to play it. I've settled on 'This I Love' as my favourite track, because it's about the only song with a hook. The other 13 songs are just a jumble. There's so much going on, but also so little, in terms of actual enjoyment. The songs are all very complex and involved, but what about the simple art of a good chorus, or decent hook? Everything is just so forgettable.

Frustrating CD.

I agree. Very tedious. It never caught on with me at all.

Hard to review this one. Not a bad album at all IMO. Some songs might be in the run for future recognition. Madagascar, This I Love and Street Of Dreams are the absolute highlights for me. Than come the more mellow tunes in Catcher In The Rye, Prostitute, There Was A Time, If The World. Than the more forward I.R.S. I'm not the biggest fan of the Industrial sounds, but these songs are among the best in the genre.

It's not completely classic GNR, but it is the album that is most reminiscent of the old band. That what all other projects failed to do this one does. The only other work coming close is Velvet Revolver's Fall To Pieces for me.

    • Maybe it's because I've heard GnR a couple thousand times by now, but I much prefer "Fall to Pieces" by Velvet Revolver over "Sweet Child o Mine" at this point in my life.
    • I'll have to investigate that Durbin. I'd count Striker and Mick Mars among the best metal releases as well now that I think about it.
    • Haven't picked up Saxon yet, but as far as metal goes, I love the new Durbin album as well.
    • I wasn’t thrilled with the singles as they came out, other than “The Serpent and the King”, but I’ll be damned if they haven’t grown on me while listening to them as part of the cohesive package that is “Invincible Shield”. I broke down and picked up the Target exclusive to get the three bonus tracks, and I enjoy them too. Overall, a damn fine addition to the JP discography. Is it better than “Firepower“? I’m not there yet, but time will tell. 🤔 This one and Saxon have set the bar pretty high for metal this year. 👍
    • Agree with this. Though I think you should check out Firepower. You can get it real cheap new everywhere. It is molten. I'm also enjoying Invincible very much and 2024 new music as a whole.
    • I remember my early days on the internet joining a group on Yahoo (yeah thats how long ago it was) and the woman who created the group was trying to persaude me how great Creed was, so much so that she sent me the first two albums on CD. I had no idea what they sounded like. When I played them all I could think is that they sounded like Pearl Jam, and I fucking hate Pearl Jam. I ended up trading them for something better. I can't remember the ins and outs of it, but I somehow shared my CD collection online and she noticed straight away that the Creed CDs were not listed. She asked me why and I said I sold them as really did not like them, and got something I did like. She never spoke to me again after that
    • Like I Do,Do - Bret Michaels
    • I have always been an on/off fan of Priest. Loved Ram it down and Painkiller, then kinda lost interest when Rob left. Only newer albums I ever got around to picking up were Angel of retribution because I saw it real cheap and Nostrodamus as I found the deluxe edition cheap as well. With this one though I was interested in what I heard and saw the deluxe edition looked cool. I then saw they were selling copies on the JP website with a signed art card in both standard and deluxe format, but baulked at the price of the deluxe as they were charging an extra £10 over the unsigned version, and postage was lumpy ... plus I was a few days from getting paid. By the time I went back on there the signed deluxe was gone but they had the standard version with the signed card and it was the same price as the unsigned version (guess nobody was buying it) so decided to buy that and order the deluxe from Amazon, keep the artcard and sell the standard CD on eBay as it is still sealed. So yeah, been playing the album today and on my third (or is it fourth) playthrough, and absolutely loving it. When bands like Bon Jovi are  getting soft as shit with age, Rob and the guys are still full on metal gods. At 72, Rob should not be able to still perform like this, but he fucking well is, so more power to him. Really good start to the year so far with the 2024 albums I have picked up.
    • Evidently, Tichy has joined up with Gene Simmons' solo band, and the Daisies replaced him with Tommy Clufetos who'd helped them out before. Be interesting to see how much more there is to the story....
    • Been listening to this one on and off since Friday, and must say I'm VERY impressed. This is easily his best solo release in my opinion, and is much more melodic than his work with Creed. This one might just be this years equivalent to Godsmack for me personally i.e. late 90s musicians going in a more melodic direction and it working quite well!
