Hurricane Bootleg Warning

Recommended Posts

I find it humorous that some people on this board find it necessary to broadly insult all those who don't listen to or collect music in the same way they do.

There seems to be a growing sentiment around here that if you, for whatever reason, want a real original pressing of a CD instead of simply downloading the music or, trading a CD-R, or buying a bootleg, that there's something wrong with you.

All of a sudden "collecting music" is now a synonym for 'anal retentive addict freak.' People "collect" for many different reasons: (1) they're a completist for a particular band or artist, (2) the challenge of putting together a vintage collection of a certain type, (3) wanting to hear all the various combinations of mixes, bonus tracks, edits, etc. (that's one of the reasons I collect CD singles). Also, not everyone goes to the collecting extremes implied to be the norm by a few parties here.

Yet a few people here want to label "collecting" as a bad thing and imply that you're not a "real fan" if you are a collector. So who is the real fan, the person who goes out of their way to find obscure pressings or imports from a band, or the person who downloads an entire artist's catalog or trades for CD-R copies of the discography? I'm not going to condemn either approach, but for some reason it has now become "cool" around here to be the latter, and "unclean" to be the former.

Does anyone else find this somewhat disturbing or am I alone in the wilderness? One could make the supposition that it is those with guilty consciences doing the most lobbing of insults...

Great point Dan..I myself am a collector..but I also have cdr's..who doesn't? I know I'll

never have everything I want musically, but I do try and seek things out.I just don't like the

"people" who Sell CDr's as the "Real thing endorsed by the band" when they are not.

Just say they are CDR's..that pretty easy IMO.

Its a easy fix - Musicans go after these guys PERIOD!. This will solve the problem. This brings me back to this Lonnie Scam. Like most these artists you complain but you didnt follow through. Yes you did the FBI thing, Postal Fruad, Called the Police department, ect. Then I hear it isnt worth persuing any further becuase of what? Well do i need to say it! Money. It would cost to much to drive here or court cost, ect. So your basically saying its ok what he did I cant afford to do anything else. BullShit! These guys will never learn unless you follow through! You cant sit back and hope what you have done so far is enough. Same with Musicains

Good idea, but unfortunately only applicable when you know who the fraud party is, have proof, and can go and sue them on the spot. With most bootlegs those things are either unknown, or very hard to prove.

Just assume for a second you are a musician and one day you see your boot on eBay - you buy it and all it says on the back is "Hot Metal records, made in Greece" - how would you proceed suing them? Hire an attorney to find them? The cheapest attorney charges like $50 per hour and we all know he will be coming back at ya after a week with a fat bill in hand telling you there is no such label... what will you do?

Yes, the insults could lessen a bit, but personally I am not insulted because I find my collecting habits to be a myriad of contractions. I have several known boots, and if I buy them knowingly, I am cool with that. Usually it is an item that I have tried to obtain but have found it out of my price range. Or it is something I already know is beyond my reach. I have two original CDs that I have paid over $50 for (both Inside Out CDs - because they are from my home town), and I have no intention of buying any more at that price. So boots sometimes become my choice.

However, I can become quite irate, as I did with the Hamilton419 listings, because she was knowingly selling boots, was insistent that they were legit, and would haggle and haggle before giving a refund. Yeah, I was not real pleased that they were crap boots, as well.

On the other hand, I am quite happy when I get an original that is collectible. Why? Probably because it adds status/value to my collection.

In summary, to me it is primarily about the music. That is why I have boots in my collection. It is also why I am thrilled that Sam keeps releasing more music on RR. But secondarily it IS about the value of my collection, and I care about that as well.

Can anyone make sense of what I just wrote??? Sometimes I have trouble understanding it myself.

Personally I don't mind admitting to being a collector of music and I would be surprised if there are very many on this site who are not collectors. The difference comes down to how you go about doing that collecting. Some prefer original cds only while others are happy with mp3s or the occasional boot. None are 'wrong ' in my opinion. I would love to pick up original cds only(99.99% of my cds are original) but if I can't afford the rare (or never officially released on cd) , I don't feel the least bit guilty about picking up a boot...

I don't think your statements were directed at me. But let me add something to what I said earlier

Collecting IS an addiction/Disease. There are so great books on this you might want to look into. I would guess that 90% of the people on this site who consider themselves collectors don't ONLY collect CD's. They have other things they collect, There is NOTHING wrong with this it is just built into there personality.

I have been selling music for over 20 years now. When I started I had to make a decision either collect or deal. My collecting was so strong I had to do 1 or the other but not both. So I started dealing music and collecting other things, just to control that side of me.

I would think your example of someone collecting only a band they like is a good one, But I would think if it was not that band it would be another or maybe not even a band but something else.

It is almost the same as a bootlegger in the way of if they have this in them to do They will not stop, Why?

There is a BIG difference in someone trading a CDR or even selling 1-2 CDR's. Then someone willing to risk doing this full time. Example - the Greek boots are coming from someone who has nothing to do with Metal music, He has been booting all kinds of music for years now. Arkarma the biggest Vinyl bootlegger in Italy has been doing vinyl since the early 80's it's just who they are. They will press anything they think will sell. I am sure that whoever is behind Rock-it, Time warp, Mosh-it or any other "Italian" labels that are booting stuff are all the same person and they will not stop even if they get caught. There is NO real punishment (Stop and dismiss) on the first offence, Second ($$$ fine) Third (short jail time MAX) It's just too easy to make money doing it. There's an old saying "once a criminal always a criminal", "Once a loser always a loser"

They are criminals that find an easy way to make cash, Some even convince themselves they are in the right.

    • No official release yet so don't know when exactly the album is supposed to come out but I'm assuming it's this year. I'm sure you're all brimming with excitement.
    • I posed him that exact question on his discord page as to what his future plans are.... He said he plans to relax for a bit, do his You Tube thing, keep writing new music and then will decide how to release that music.  He said as of now he's thinking he'll either do a solo thing or form his own band.  He didn't say this but I'd sort of envision a Daughtry type "band" where he kind of puts a band behind his name. So essentially, I think you're right on with his plans.  Ultimately, I think like you say, the control is a big part of it.  I think he wants to be able to operate on his own schedule to maintain his health and family obligations. It'll be interesting to see what sound the new material takes on.  It would seem logical to think it would be rock/melodic rock of some sort since that's really the type of music he's built his following with but he certainly has shown he can dabble anywhere from AOR to metal.
    • Glad I got to see them with Erik in front. All the best to him, definitely looking forward to his future outings when he is fully recovered. Would be cool to see him form his own band, where he could take control, and play around in different genres, from full on metal, to soothing AOR, the guy is so versatile.
    • Remedy - Crying Heart. One I've just seen thanks to the Iridium channel.  From the upcoming album. It's a Killer.
    • Let's not forget Benny Hill. What a Magnificent show that was.
    • Yeah... I dunno about that. It would be too cringe. Who knows? If I'm high enough, I might submit a video.
    • Yep great track and if you fancy being in the video for "The Feeling" nows your chance.
    • I'm proud to say that I had this single when I was a mere 8 years old. KISS were big down here then. Norman Gunston is Iconic for Aussies of my vintage.  The face ln the bottom left says it all. Hilarious.
    • All in all, this is a great story. Erik played a brilliant, well received, albeit short cameo with one of our favourite bands.  It was a win, win, win. A win for us, a win for Skid Row (the album certainly put them back on the map) and a win for Erik, adding this to his already impressive resume. The fact that it was so amicable with both parties is also great to see.
    • I really like this album - not every song on it but there are some surprisingly catchy melodies all over. Personally I think the singer adds great energy to the mix. It reminds me of the earlier Bai Bang ("closer to you")
