  1. Man, you're not kidding. That was awesome!
  2. If I had 20 songs I would have included these from your list: Pull Me Under, Learning to Live, Breaking All Illusions, Fatal Tragedy.
  3. If I'd gone 20 songs Through Her Eyes would have been on it.
  4. I'm sorry, Eric, but my opinion's different than yours on this album. Maybe I should give it another try. I bought the CD and couldn't believe how awful it was. I listened to it through a dozen or so times over half a year or so, and then I just threw the CD out 'cuz I knew I'd never listen to it ever again! That was probably around 10 years ago. Now this is what's great about humans and our diversity in personalities, background, musical knowledge, etc: we do enjoy all sorts of different genres and bands and songs. I'm going to give it another listen; perhaps I've matured a bit and will enjoy it.
  5. What are the truly great Dream Theater songs? I'm limiting my list to 10 songs. Inspired by the recent post about "A View from the Top of the World", here's my list of Dream Theater songs that I think are actually great. I'll let you define what great means. To me a song is great when the 1) musicianship is top notch, 2) melody is beautiful and moving, and 3) lyrics are meaningful and jar my emotions. My list might look different from yours b/c lyrics are pretty important to me. Oh, a great guitar solo puts the icing on the cake! Dream Theater's sound has become too mechanical and emotionless for me. Yet there are great songs in the catalogue. Here's my list somewhat organized with my favourites at the top 1) Hollow Years (Budokan extended version) 2) The Spirit Carries On 3) War Inside My Head / The Test That Stumped Them All 4) The Dance of Eternity 5) As I Am 6) Lines in the Sand (album version with Dug Pinnick on vocals!) 7) Octavarium 8) Forsaken 9) Illumination Theory (I created an abridged version that's 15 1/2 minutes long; I felt justified after seeing them perform abridged versions live) 10) On the Backs of Angels
  6. It's maybe a bit sacriligous to say this, but there are ALOT of bands that I'd be content to have 1 or 2 albums of their hits. I don't have time to listen to album upon album by every band out there. I'll often buy or listen to a best of, and if the music intrigues me enough I'll go out and buy an album. I've got Dragonforce's best-of, and I love it, but at this point I don't think there's alot more to discover from them.
  7. I found myself in the same boat; each new album I'd think, "maybe they'll get it right this time", and there'd be a couple of songs that shone but the rest were too mechanical even if they were melodic. Their s/t was the last one I even listened to all the way through; I can listen to the singles on Amazon Music now.
  8. I agree!! I don't know how they can know so many bands and styles and songs!
  9. Wow, does he have alot of music there! I'm gonna search for some of the old cassettes I had 25 years ago!
  10. Man, it's hard to come up with a list. I'm not nearly as well-listened as you guys. I'm going through my favourite bands right now, and I don't think any of them has 5 great albums in a row: Megadeth, Tourniquet, Kansas, Vengeance Rising, Dream Theater, Dragonforce, Joe Satriani, Theocracy. As noted above, alot of these bands could make a hellova Hits album, but not 5 in a row! Megadeath, maybe four: Rust in Peace > Cryptic Writings Tourniquet, maybe four: Stop the Bleeding > Vanishing Lessons Dream Theater, maybe 3: Metropolis, Pt. 2 > Train of Thought I think Theocracy is on its way. Mirror of Souls, As The World Bleeds, and Ghost Ship are incredible. But they're still 2 shy; we'll see what happens in the next few years. However, I think Skillet has done it in recent years. You could argue that Rise maybe wasn't great, but I've been so impressed with them in recent years. Comatose > Awake > Rise > Unleashed > Victorious. I thought they were gonna crash and burn years ago, but they've just been getting better.
  11. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm a fan of Deliverance - Weapons of our Warfare, Vengeance Rising (first 2 albums especially), Bloodgood (yup, first couple albums), Barren Cross - Atomic Arena, and Extol's Burial. I've listened to Believer' and Veni Domine (like 20 years ago!) and they didn't resonate with me. Red Sea and Hero I've never heard of, so I'll be checking them out right now!
  12. Good day! I'll be honest upfront--I'm joining this forum to advertise my debut Christian hard rock metal album. Band name is Sevenoneself, album is "The Treasure of the Crucible". But more of that in a different post. I grew up in Saskatchewan, Canada, where there's little-to-no music scene. In high school I survived off of HM magazine (and their sampler CD's), our local Christian bookstore (era of Intense, REX, and the beginnings of SolidState), and Cross Rhythms Music. I even ordered a few CD's from Rowe Productions; 2 were flagged at the border and by the time I paid duty I owned 2 VERY expensive Christian thrash albums! I'm a multi-instrumentalist who has ended up playing in worship bands most of his life. I've been a part of very-small music projects, but nothing that has ever turned into anything. The fact that my wife and I had our first child when I was 22 could have something to do with that! I've been a youth pastor, associate pastor, and bible camp director. I am not nearly as versed in the music world as most of you. I knew the music scene much better 25 years ago than now. But the last few years I've been checking out the top reviews at AngelicWarlord and have picked up some great new music. My Favourite Christian Metal Bands / Albums (no particular order): Tourniquet - Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance Skillet - Unleashed Vengeance - Once Dead Stryper - Against the Law Narnia - From Darkness to Light Tamplin - Soul Survivor Theocracy - As the World Bleeds Living Sacrifice - Nonexistent Zao - The Splinter Shards... The Crucified - Pillars of Humanity
