Judas Priest - Turbo

I went to a church dinner last night and they had a "silent auction" and I bid on a box full of CDs and cassettes(!) and won. I really only bid on it to get the Time/Life Ultimate Rock Ballads Collection (which looks like it's never been played) but there were a few interesting tapes as well: Richard Marx, Toto, Phil Collins, John Mellencamp, .38 Special, etc. Pretty good for fifteen bucks.

My first concert was Dolly Parton at the Montana State fair in about 1976...but my real rock first concert was Billy Squier/Molly Hatchet at the Lloyd Noble Arena, Norman, OK, in December 1984. I was 15 and my sister was 24 and she just loved Billy so much she just had to go. But she was scared to drive through Oklahoma City so our parents drove us there. The thing that struck me the most about the show was how LOUD it was! I really wasn't familiar with Molly Hatchet at the time despite having listened to a few of their older albums that my brother owned, but they put on a pretty good show. I remember them having a huge grand piano on stage at one point. I was definitely more familiar with Billy Squier since his songs were all over the radio in those days, and he rocked! The light show was awesome and I'd never seen anything like it before. An interesting side note: my sister saw a guy there she knew and we sat and talked with him for a while before the show. Two years later they got married and they are still married to this day and have three grown kids. Fat Freddy, I also saw Priest on the Turbo tour and thought they were great! I still listen to that album a lot and love it.

Yep, I remember this one well since it ran on Showtime constantly in the early 80s. I recently watched it again and, sure enough, it's really, really bad. Interestingly, the tub scene with the super-cute Kari Michaelson predates a similar scene in Nightmare On Elm Street by three years!

When I was just a little kid in the mid-70s, the first album I ever got was The Beach Boys - Endless Summer...on 8-track! I wore that sucker out, as well as an 8-track of Johnny Horton's Greatest Hits. I also listened to my Dad's music like Waylon, Willie, Don Williams, etc. Then in 1977 my older brother gave me Kiss' Destroyer and Rock 'n' Roll Over on vinyl (I still have 'em) and that set me on the hard rock/metal course. My first real "metal" albums that I bought were Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance and Scorpions - Blackout.

Kick-Ass, The Crow, 300, Ghost World, Road To Perdition, The Mask, Punisher: Warzone, Watchmen. But I voted for X-Men, even though I'm really voting for X2, which is still my favorite superhero movie.

Not CDs of course, but these cassettes are BRAND NEW, still in the original plastic wrapping! I found them online for only 99 cents to $1.98 each. I've only listened to the Bronz tape and it's excellent.

Those were my picks as well, but damn what a year! Lots of classics released in '84.
