  1. Good points! Re Styx, from what I listened to I certainly preferred the earlier stuff and that must be in major part down to the different singer as in their more recent stuff it was the vocals that was putting me off listening Guess there are plenty of others that would like his style though, all down to personal taste, but I guess that would prove your argument re different vocals potentially splitting the fan base
  2. interesting, maybe time for me to see another Norwegian flick..about a year ago I sat through 3 parts of Dead Snow with Nazi zombies..... I also saw Headhunters (2011), I remember it being good Norwegian flick Dead Snow was awesome. Part 2 was insane! You ever see Trollhunter? That's a pretty cool Norwegian film. I'll look out for them.
  3. Whatwhatnow?! I'd hazard a guess to say you might be the only one in the world with these crazy thoughts. If not for his voice, I think Nickelback's fanbase would be 10 times what it is. Huh? His voice is gorgeous!
  4. Is that a separate group they formed?
  5. Oooh, I shall try that. I listened to them doing a duet with another singer on Hotel California and then gave some of Equinox a try but I wasn't keen on his voice if I'm honest, at least, not on first listening. Love is a ritual sounds promising
  6. The Wave a pretty impressive Norwegian disaster movie based on a rock-slide tsunami incident which destroyed the village of Tafjordon in 1934 and a similar incident nearby in 1905. Well worth a viewing (if you don't speak fluent Norwegian and don't mind subtitles in a movie of course)
  7. Was reading the thread asking whether peeps were more interested in the new Nickelback or Styx offerings and spent a bit of time listening to various Nickelback songs as I love Chad Kroeger's voice but I was finding that because his voice is so distinctive a lot of the songs just reminded me of their famous hit How You Remind Me. Or I'm guessing it's because his voice is so recognisable, I guess it could be other factors. I guess there's plenty of positives to having a voice that's instantly recognisable and unique - not least from a marketing point of view - but I do find it makes listening to whole albums by one artist in one sitting even less interesting than I usually find. Was just curious to see if anyone on here had an opinion on that or not? What would be the pluses and minuses of having distinctive v anonymous vocal sound in a band? (Having said that, I'm gonna add their new album, Feed the Machine, to my collection as was pretty impressed by what I heard of it)
  8. Now I would have said Nickelback interests me more - but only because I absolutely love the tone and colour of the singer's voice and have never heard anything by Styx (which I shall now remedy by you-tubing them). Was wondering, do you reckon if a band has a frontman with a really distinctive voice.... wait, I'm gonna start a new thread for this one
  9. I don't know what you win but it's taken me over 1,000 posts to get a woman to respond to me.I've never been to jail but I'm guessing this is how it feels to be released from prison after 4 years(that's how long I've been a member here). awww there does seem to be a sad lack of females on this forum at the moment. Maybe I should start some girly thread topics and see if I can lure some on board. Then again, most of the topics are pretty gender neutral to be honest and it's not like there's a dearth of women into rock music. Maybe they're just not into talking about it? Now I'm curious... why aren't there more women on the forum? Do you reckon you guys prefer it that way? I wonder whether/how it would change if there were more of us contributing? Oh the endless questions!
  10. Long way to go!!! What do I win if I hit 1000?
  11. Hmmmm, how many have I got?
  12. Haha, sneaky! Might suggest that to my brothers!
  13. Wahay, lucky you! Paris is awesome (+London too of course). Festival season should be underway so there should hopefully be some open air events going on.
  14. Dual is pretty awesome I reckon. I think it was Spielberg's first ever feature length film. The main actor in it is awesome and basically has to carry the whole movie on his shoulders. It's about a murderous truck driver. It would defo be in my top ten, in fact I reckon I'll watch it again tonight!
  15. Your daughter has good taste She thinks so... FWIW, some movies off my list that aren't all that well known, but I obviously think are worth a look are The Salton Sea - Val Kilmer in a movie with a few twists and turns Nick Of Time - Johnny Depp plays a businessman who must obey his daughters captors to ensure she survived They Live - Rowdy Roddy Piper isn't a great actor, but the premise of this movie is. About aliens infiltrating earth. Less Than Zero - Robert Downey Jr is the movie that has Poisons version of Kiss's RNR All Nite. About how drugs screw up youth etc Runner Runner - Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck about drug running and getting caught up in that world. Everly - Salma Hyeck gets caught up with the Russian mob and has to kick some ass to get out alive Yaaay thanks, will check them out
  16. Teee heee, that's why I loved the thread too
  17. I thought this vid was pretty cool Made me smile (the song's pretty good too). Wish I could flipping work out why it sometimes posts the link with a picture and sometimes doesn't though!!!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rK-sfxBycQM
  18. Oooh i might do mine too. Surprised Cape Fear isn't on anyone's list -i loved the original and the remake of that. Zodiac was pretty good and the Mothman - i think that's what it was called. (Was based on the story of this giant moth like creature that appeared to people just before major disasters). I'd need to resee them tho to see if i'd class them as favorites. I'm a big fan of classic movies+film noir too
  19. I'm driven by the hunt and my pocket book. I never buy new or direct from a label. Its all about the scrounge at the pawn shop, book store, yard sale and I will buy most everything if the price is right and it looks cool! Now I will go direct to a band I like and get a newer release from them. I used to try to buy brand new from record stores to support them but must admit I've started going more down the download route now as I just don't have space to store hard copies. There are quite a few 2nd hand items sneaking into my collection recently though too
  20. Music collectors are a varied bunch, and their collecting preferences depend on their tastes, their wallets, and their level of O.C.D. Some guys will buy any thing a particular musician plays/sings on, or anything recorded at a certain studio, during a particular year, or everything a certain label puts out. And then there are the vinyl collectors/audiophiles, who are on a whole 'nother level. Visit any forum dedicated to vinyl collecting and you'll see dudes who have purchased 20 different pressings of the same record, looking for the best "sounding" version. ("Which is the best copy of the self titled Catz Ass debut? Is it the Guatemalan vinyl with the green label or the Ecuadorian second press with the white label?") ... we're all insane! Hahah, I love insanity!
  21. Crikey that's manic. Feels like it's playing at double speed!
  22. I never knew that people bought albums based on their label, has it always been that way with collectors? I have no idea which labels released any of the albums that I own. It's coincidental reading this thread as it was only yesterday I was asking my husband how he discovers bands & decides to buy their music. I'm not sure how I discover those that I like either. Thinking about it, it's probably from hearing them on the radio, sampler CDs or recommendations from others. Certainly I've bought some recently after listening to tracks or bands who get thumbs up from members on this site
  23. Bet that vid didn't cost much to make but it kept me watching in some freaky way. Who needs big budgets? Lol.
  24. Yaaay I love this review by the rocktologist. Wonder whether the album would have benefited from a couple more upbeat tracks as he suggests? Certainly will be worth considering for any follow up albums. In the meantime, 17/20 puts a big smile on our faces http://www.therocktologist.com/raw-silk---the-borders-of-light.html
