Rev Saints rated pretty average for me. I think the debut was far better. The new one just did really, really little for me at all.

Wow Geoff! I am seriously impressed. That shows such commitment to music to have taken the time and effort rating all these! I stand in awe

obviously they are not lol ;)

No, they are not. A couple of songs that don't suck on that one... most of them do, though.

Thanks. Yeah, by my own admission, many of those lower scores don't come after continued spins of poor albums, but I put my name to it, and stand by every rating on that list. :)

Anyway, it's a huge list and it's always saddens me a little that we concentrate on the top 10-20 and in a strong year, a lot of good albums more or less get forgotten. That's why I had to do a top 30 list in detail, just to acknowledge some strong albums, outside of my top 10. Anyway, there's a lot of albums worth a comment from 2017, and I might take a moment to lend a comment or two to some; both good, bad and indifferent. Just albums that deserve a mention;

31 -  Harem Scarem - United ; good album by the veterans... just didn't hold up to repeated listens as I'd hope it would. To be harsh and honest, I didn't really enjoy the guitar tone as much as usual either.

34 -All Time Low - Last Young Renegade ; really worthy of a mention as I ended up really loving a handful of songs on this one. Do yourself a favour and seek out 'Last Young Renegade,' 'Life Of The Party' and the super grower, 'Dark Side Of Your Room.' Great addition to a strong discography.

 35 -Asking Alexandria - Asking Alexandria ; I'm really liking these guys at the moment. First song is a killer, and it's a good, strong album with majority clean vocals. I do like them.

43 -The Boyscout - We Were Kings ; shame about the harsh vocals, because this is really a very fine melodic rock album. A lot of really good songs, kind of reminding me of a good Casanova. 'You are not alone,' '1983' and 'Our night' are stand-outs.

45 -Steel Panther - Lower The Bar ; shame to see these guys so low. Seems the album was pretty poorly viewed by most, but I can't be that harsh. It's still a good album to me - just way, way off their best. I love 'That's When You Came In' and it's a solid listen. I just hope for better from them if there's still more to come.

51 -Silverstein - Dead Reflection ; their best album in a while here. I always enjoyed spinning this through the year and cranked some of these songs for the neighbourhood to enjoy. 'Retrograde' is killer.

54 -One Ok Rock - Ambitions ; an album I mentioned early on in the year that I was sad it'd undoubtedly get lost in the shuffle. And ever-enjoyable spin, with great vocals and production. I still think this is a really, really fine album.

57 -The Everyday Anthem - Nobodies ; another good, fun listen. The ballad, 'Always Been You' was one of my favourite songs of the year and struck a chord every single time it played in my ears, which was very frequently.

58 -The Maine - Lovely Little Lonely ; a ridiculously consistent band who don't deserve to be lost in the shuffle. Their downfall is they don't write absolute stand out monsters. But in place of that, they consistently write wonderful delights and the average score of songs on their albums is great. Always love hearing these guys.

62 -Brother Firetribe - Sunbound ; this one is lucky to be at #62. Kind of there because technically it's good - technically there's nothing wrong with it. But honestly, as near as the worst replay value of any prolific album for me in 2017. The amount of times I skipped through it when it was it's turn on the stereo. And I don't even know why. As I say, technically all okay... just completely unappealing to me.

65 -Da Vinci - Ambition Rocks ; really, really noteworthy comeback album from these guys. And this is where it would do me favours to check every single position on this list before I post it, because this is about 20% more enjoyable to me than Brother Firetribe. Damn technicalities. But these guys put in a real good comeback effort. 'I've Come All This Way,' 'See U When I See U' and 'Sole Survivor' would in no way be out of place on their 'Back in Business' album. 'Rocket of fame,' however, would almost be album highlight, lol. What a killer tune! One of those albums with a bunch of really good songs, let down by the average of some weak songs too. :(

68 -Breakaway - The Light That Keeps Me Awake ; great modern rock, well worth a listen. High quality tunes. This was a pleasure when it came on the speakers every time.

77 -Deaf Havana - All These Countless Nights ; another really consistent band and I just loved then this hit the speakers too. Good consistent stuff... again, just let down in the overall score by a couple of tunes that just missed the mark.

100 -Sisters Doll - All Dolled Up ; this sounded like a good step up for the kids of first listen. Gotta be honest, though, the replay value was pretty weak. Better than what they've done before, but they've still a long way to go.

121 -Pink Cream 69 - Headstrong ; another one that sounded good on first or second spin, just just didn't hold up at all to repeated spins. It was good to hear them back, but unfortunately it became pretty average again pretty quick. :(

138 -The Classic Crime - How to Be Human ; way down the list, but don't be fooled into thinking that 'Holy Water,' 'Not Done With You Yet' and 'Ghost' aren't all excellent songs.

189 -Bai Bang - Rock of Life ; very far down the list for Bai Bang as I have generally liked these guys. But what a poor album. Recycled song ideas, dead "anthems,' horrible vocals and weak production. They just really missed the mark here, even though I can appreciate they were still trying to do what fans of them like. This is just a case of when anthems go wrong. Good ideas - just really poor execution.

274 -Mr. Big - Defying Gravity ; their worst album yet. Even by their hot and cold standards, this one was just a horror show. Very bad album from a band that usually manages a small handful of good songs amongst the garbage. But not this time. Such a bad album.

275 -Paramore - After Laughter ; what has happened to this trainwreck of a band? What a way to fall. I'm not even sure the pop crowd they're trying to appeal to even cares either? What a terrible outcome for these guys.

276 -Eighteen Visions - XVIII ; man I was excited to hear these guys were back, until I heard this. Wow. Just dreadful, and no appeal whatsoever to fans of their rather good s/t album, or the Burn Halo stuff. Just a slap in the balls, to be honest. Shound;t have stayed defunct.

281 -The Darkness - Pinewood smile ; justifiably this did rate really low, because it's awful, but it's the lowest rated albums which still has good songs on it. 'Solid Gold' and 'Happiness' are condescending fuckers of songs, but still very catchy anyway. The rest is a testical salad, though.

Anyway, I could have commented on everything if I had the time... but a few for today. ;)

No, they are not. A couple of songs that don't suck on that one... most of them do, though.

Thanks. Yeah, by my own admission, many of those lower scores don't come after continued spins of poor albums, but I put my name to it, and stand by every rating on that list. :)

Anyway, it's a huge list and it's always saddens me a little that we concentrate on the top 10-20 and in a strong year, a lot of good albums more or less get forgotten. That's why I had to do a top 30 list in detail, just to acknowledge some strong albums, outside of my top 10. Anyway, there's a lot of albums worth a comment from 2017, and I might take a moment to lend a comment or two to some; both good, bad and indifferent. Just albums that deserve a mention;

Quite a few on your list I will need to check out in the mid 70 range ([percentage)

Agree on the Silverstein , great album , probably my favourite from them in fact , Surprised the You are We album is so far down your list , thought you would like that one , some huge choruses on that albeit with a lot of harsh vocals thrown in

Yeah mate, still a lot of very fine albums in those mid-70's. You got the We Came As Romans, Thousand Below and Coldrain albums (assuming SOTY, Falling In Reverse and Spoken - as you told me about them - are givens)? As my list suggests, I thought they were the best in terms of this type of modern rock in the year. Some great stuff on those albums.

I'll be honest, those While She Sleeps kids just aren't for me at all. I thought 'Wide awake' was a pretty cool tune, but the vocals are just too full on and harsh throughout, without any real relief.

I have never really been a fan of WCAR up until their last album which was a lot lighter than their previous stuff and I enjoyed quite a bit of that one but read the new one was a lot heavier , been meaning to check it out still but not as of yet , will give it a listen for sure ,  Love the Coldrain and had a quick spin of Thousand Below and kept two or three songs from it but couldn't get into it as a whole (Sinking me gets daily spins , great song)

I was really disappointed in the SOTY initially and there are still a few songs that don't work for me , but damn are there some absolute killers there , namely praying for Rain , I swear and Home , definitely a solid album that one

Spoken never put out a bad album either , super consistent band

My favourite modern rock discs this year are from Awaken I Am and Ghost Atlas i think , i would definitely sugest checking them out if you havent already , ghost atlas is basically a Saosin album!

I admire your enthusiasm for these lower rated albums but for me only my top 30 or so albums were great. a very strong year.

but after that the quality drops off a cliff and I highly doubt anything past top 20 will still get a spin in like 3 months time

There's enough quality this year to have missed quite a few and it's worth going back That Tales From The Porn passed me by and may have made a very high spot if I had heard it earlier, for example.

fair enough mate. for me it was nowhere near my top 20. out of 9 songs there's about 4 good songs. a bunch of dodgy lyrics and a dodgy cover.

but to each their own

The WCAR album is heavy in places, but there's a lot of clean vocals - more clean than scream - and big melodies. Their balance between lighter stuff and heavy is near perfect for me.

I'll check out those two albums you mention. I think I did check the threads out earlier, but not sure either initially clicked with me. That Saosin sound can be cool, but unless you're going to get close to, or better than the quality of that s/t album, it can just sound a dull second best and disappointing, lol. That's still a great album, despite them new coming close to matching it.

Did you check out this song from the other thread from WCAR? It's probably the heaviest, or second heaviest song on the album - as heavy as they get these days - but that chorus. Zomfg, one of my favourites of the year. Brutal song;

This one's a more perfect blend of heavy and melody... my second favourite on the album. The 3rd verse/breakdown section and end of the song moved me immensely all year;

Or if you just want pretty pure modern melodic rock;

Agreed on that , when i think of the sound done badly i think of a band called secret and whisper,Ghost Atlas do it well imo

Well all three of those songs are magnificient, especially foreign fire and the chorus on cold like war is certainly huge, getting a real Silverstein retrograde vibe from that one

This has become a must listen for me

Tried that S.Pearcy but didn't make me roll.

But I love the confess album, bought the vinyl and it was a really  nice late edition to my top 25 list.  Particularly, I love the A side and also the killer cover!
