From Frontiers:

BREAKING NEWS: Grammy winning singer/songwriter Rick Springfield is releasing his new album 'The Snake King' on January 26th, 2018 on the Frontiers Music Srl label.

Rick, not for the first time in his career, has thrown a curveball that surprises and absolutely delights at the same time. The Snake King finds Rick traveling down a dusty dirt road to explore the blues side of his rock ‘n roll and marks a definite departure from the power pop he has been known for.

“All my first bands that I played in as a kid in Australia were blues bands, trying desperately to copy as best we could the amazing music we were hearing coming out of the Chicago blues scene and the older stuff from the deep South, “says Springfield. “My guitar playing was always influenced by the same guys who influenced all the English players I grew up with, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page etc. Everyone was playing their version of what they heard from the Southern Blues and the Chicago scene.”

Rick Springfield has been on the road performing a solo/songwriter show called 'Stripped Down' for the past 2 years and has included a couple of blues songs within this show, played on his steel resonator guitar. “The blues songs are so much fun to play and they got such a reaction from the audience that I started thinking about including some of that vibe in my next album,” he continues. "And with the shape of humanity’s struggle against this amazing planet, I wanted the album to be more lyric driven, so, for better or for worse, it produced The Snake King. Good luck to us all.”

All you have to do now is check out the first couple cuts on the album, “In The Land Of The Blind” and “Little Demon” or maybe the title-track to get an understanding of the blues laden journey Rick wants to take you on. And of the many delights on this album, Rick’s underrated guitar playing really shines here, perhaps more so than on any album in his storied catalog. As for the lyrics? Not what you’d expect either, but we’ll leave it up to the listener to decide what’s being relayed there.

Serafino Perugino, Frontiers President said: "Working with Rick Springfield for this very special album is a true honor and a pleasure. Rick is truly one of the most gifted artists on the Frontiers label and we are so proud to be at his service. Enjoy THE SNAKE KING and follow Rick Springfield in this new exciting phase of his career!"

The point is...?

I don't mind this actually. I was nearly gonna post it in song of the day yesterday, but I didn't want to steal Mr.AOR's thunder.

Really pushing a message with this one, eh?

He's certainly dealt with some Demons throughout his life. I heard this story years ago. Although he's had great success, i'm sure he still thinks about this everyday. You can see his demeanor change when he talks about it.

I'm lovin 'it, except 2 songs( the Xmasy one and the other with the "hey-yeahs"). Of course it's an unusual/moody one.

I haven't got it yet, but I intend to. I like what i've heard so far.

WOW!! Now, isn't this the biggest flaming pile of horseshit that 2018 will produce?! It's fucking horrible. I am a massive fan of Mr Springfield and I enjoy every single one of his solo albums... until 2018. Wow. It is so bad.

As always, I acknowledge his great lyrics. I love 'em. And I absolutely love how uncomfortable a christian would be listening to this album. If it wasn't such a fucking terrible song I'd love to visit my local church on Sunday (as usual) and blast 'Jesus was an athiest' on the speakers of my tape deck and just watch all the freaks crumpled up in the foetal position before me. It would be great.

... If the song, and the album, wasn't so fucking dreadful.

Seriously, I like the lyrics and the strong anti-religion subject matter of the album, but have I said how absolutely fucking atrocious the songs are? Such a shame. It's a really terrible album from an otherwise great artist. Please don't make this "your thing" from now on, Rick. ;)

But given how pretty poor the year has been so far is it still in your top three of the year?

Nope. It's not up for consideration. If this was the only CD that was released this year, it would not be the best CD of the year. It would be the worst. And very well could be that.

I've only listened to it once and it's not bad, but also not something I plan to purchase.  If you don't like blues music you probably won't find much that interests you on the album.  I saw him do an interview a few years back and he seemed to have a chip on his shoulder with regards to some people seeing him as a one hit wonder and not taking him seriously as a musician.  I think albums like this, "Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptance" and "Rocket Science" are just him branching out and showing people a different side of his musical talent & interests, knowing full well not all of his fans will like it.

He had a few hits.

But the title is fair. He will always be seen that way.

Rock Of Life was never going to get the credit it deserved, much like Pseudo Echo's Race, because they deviated from what the core fans expected which was rock pop.
