Actually I'm bored of all these circular/first cause arguments. None is valid and all suck.

The OP apparently was referring to albums considered by many influential or essential or genre defining and thus the rest should pay respect to them etc.

 

Personally, I care the less for this notion. Surley, I'm always interested in what inspired my favorite artists to play or what are their current playlists ( I even don't care about the hype factor that is usually associated with these playlists) and always, especially in the digital age, try to find and listen to them. Actually, I have the opinion that this is a good way to create some new music.

 

But and this is a big one, please don't tell me, for example, that I have to like/love Hendrix because inspired Yngwie to take a guitar. I don't! On the other hand I love Blackmore, his other major influence.

 

Guide me, surely, but let me decide for myself.

Nah. I challenged him on that, and he confirmed he was merely looking for albums we considered filler-free. Which is still a matter of opinion, but not as deep as arguing what are the most influential albums.

When I think essential I think of those handful of discs that in the wall of music we all have are the disc (s) that get grabbed regularly, the go to discs no matter what.

For me it would be these:

Spread Eagle-S/T

Warrior Soul-Last Decade Dead Century

Y&T-Open Fire

Metal Church-S/T

Enuff Z Nuff-1985

I am certain I will recall a couple others but those are always go to choices that always deliver.

If you like glam rock and don't own it you're an absolute twerp. If you don't like glam... then yeah, it is laughable. I do, however, love glam.

Most will say Motley and GNR are glam, but I never saw them that way.

The Sweet, T-rex, PBF are what I'd call glam

Not a big fan as a whole but for me some great albums are

 

Funhouse - Generation Generator --- One Fun House is an amazing song

Electrik - Love Buzz Harmony is amazing --- this is one album everyone should have period

Bai Bang - All Around The World --- Not sure if Bai Bang fit my description for glam, but I think glam when I hear their music

Very few albums albums after the glory days but that is no slur on recent albums as there are loads which are killer albums but have just one 'weaker' song so just don't quite qualify for me.....for example all 3 work of art albums.

 

On that subject check out these killer albums from 1989 alone which miss the list because of one song (in brackets)....not necessarily a bad song but not quite up to the quality of the rest -

Like the other day, a dude told me that if it wasn't for black sabbath, manowar wouldn't exist. Well, screw you dude (insert rant here). The less I care for the sabbs. Actually I'm bored of all these circular/first cause arguments. None is valid and all suck.

 

 

He doesn't want only 1 essential album but which albums that you really like the whole song buddy, well for me, every top 10 in every year is important and I'm sure I love every minute of em.

 

That dude is not entirely wrong, Black Sabbath is a very important and influential band in the heavy metal genre, and that also goes with Led Zeppelin and Blue Cheer. I think these 3 bands are the real roots of every metal genre. And regarding Manowar, well the relation to Sabbath is real close because Joey DeMaio used to work as bass tech for Sabbath before he formed the band

Same goes for maiden. Because they influenced the first major wave of US heavy/power metal, doesn't make it obligatory for every fan of the genre to love them.

Mr Heartache is a great example of how to take a d.purple riff and make something good out of it- I only don't like the breakdown before the solo.

And Live After Death is cheating - that's like a greatest hits album

Live After Death and Pulse are two live albums where they've improved on the studio versions of all the tracks i reckon. Love both of them.

 

I'm probably one of the few who genuinely likes all the Use Your Illusion tracks. Granted they are not all killer but i wouldn't say they have fillers on either.
