the top 10 from every year I consider essential

Actually I'm bored of all these circular/first cause arguments. None is valid and all suck.

Especially yours. ;}

Buddy, let's be serious on this.

The OP apparently was referring to albums considered by many influential or essential or genre defining and thus the rest should pay respect to them etc.

Personally, I care the less for this notion. Surley, I'm always interested in what inspired my favorite artists to play or what are their current playlists ( I even don't care about the hype factor that is usually associated with these playlists) and always, especially in the digital age, try to find and listen to them. Actually, I have the opinion that this is a good way to create some new music.

But and this is a big one, please don't tell me, for example, that I have to like/love Hendrix because inspired Yngwie to take a guitar. I don't! On the other hand I love Blackmore, his other major influence.

Guide me, surely, but let me decide for myself.

Nah. I challenged him on that, and he confirmed he was merely looking for albums we considered filler-free. Which is still a matter of opinion, but not as deep as arguing what are the most influential albums.

Harem Scarem - s/t

Dream Theater - Images And Words

Queensryche - Operation:Mindcrime

Waltham - s/t

Great Big Sea - Up

Lillian Axe - Poetic Justice and Love & War

I like how you threw that Great Big Sea album in there. If I expand my list past three albums, there'll be a lot of weird stuff in there. ;}

Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime

Guns n' Roses - Appetite For Destruction

Van Halen: Fair Warning

When I think essential I think of those handful of discs that in the wall of music we all have are the disc (s) that get grabbed regularly, the go to discs no matter what.

For me it would be these:

Spread Eagle-S/T

Warrior Soul-Last Decade Dead Century

Y&T-Open Fire

Metal Church-S/T

Enuff Z Nuff-1985

I am certain I will recall a couple others but those are always go to choices that always deliver.

You guys get it.

Great choices BTW.

Didn't like my selections?

I don't know where you got that from mate.

I thought i made it clear that i was interested in your choices for all killer, no filler albums.

Nothing's been mentioned about "influential" or "genre defining".

It's not that deep of a topic man.

Ok, buddy, this happens in forums. Most probably, I was misguided from the use of the word "essential".

Implementing the principle of automated writing popularized by Andre Breton here are the first to come in mind

Jag Panzer - Ample Destruction

Fifth Angel - S/t

Gargoyle - S/t

Manilla Road - Mystification

Harem Scarem - S/t

Omen - Battle Cry

Manowar - Into Glory Ride

Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry

Riot - Thundersteel

Helstar - Nosferatu

Dammaj - Mutiny

Heir Apparent - Graceful Inheritance

Leatherwolf - S/t

Savage Garce - Master Of Disguise

Warlord- Deliver Us

Twisted Sister - Stay Hundry

Solitude Aeturnus - Beyond The Crimson Horizon

Raw Silk - Silk under the skin

Pretty Maids - Jump The Gun

Boinfire - Point Blank

Dokken - Back for the Attack

Yngwie J. Malmsteen - Marching out

Savatage - Hall of the mountain king

The Lord Weird Slough Feg - Down Among the deadmen

Accept - Restless and wild

Trying to keep it strictly to one album per band. I will see how this holds after I rate them again.

Beautiful!

There's quite a few there i haven't heard of that i'll have to check out.

I don't know why i limited it to three. Bigger lists like this one would be better.

I might post a few more of my own choices.

If you like glam rock and don't own it you're an absolute twerp. If you don't like glam... then yeah, it is laughable. I do, however, love glam.

Guess the word 'glam' is the key.

Most will say Motley and GNR are glam, but I never saw them that way.

The Sweet, T-rex, PBF are what I'd call glam

Not a big fan as a whole but for me some great albums are

Funhouse - Generation Generator --- One Fun House is an amazing song

Electrik - Love Buzz Harmony is amazing --- this is one album everyone should have period

Bai Bang - All Around The World --- Not sure if Bai Bang fit my description for glam, but I think glam when I hear their music

Bai Bang - Livin' My Dream

Here's a list of albums which I consider essential and I genuinely love EVERY song.....not necessarily my top 30 of all time as many of these will be beaten by albums with one filler but many more 10s if that makes sense.

Iron Maiden - NOTB

Journey - Escape

Toto - IV

Asia - s/t

Steve Perry - Street Talk

Marillion - Script

Wildlife - s/t

Bon Jovi - s/t

Marillion - Misplaced Childhood

Gregg Rolie - s/t

FM - Indiscreet / Tough It Out

GnR - Appetite

Kane Roberts - S&S

Survivor - THTS

D2 - s/t

Strangeways - Walk In The Fire

Robin Beck - Trouble or Nothin

Nelson - After The Rain

Valentine - s/t

Harem Scarem - s/t / WOTW / Higher

Hardline - Double Eclipse

Unruly Child - s/t

Theshold - Subsurface / Dead Reckoning

Loverboy - Just Gettin Started

Hinder - TITTL

First Signal - s/t

HEAT - Address The Nation

Degreed - Dead But Not Forgotten

Very few albums albums after the glory days but that is no slur on recent albums as there are loads which are killer albums but have just one 'weaker' song so just don't quite qualify for me.....for example all 3 work of art albums.

On that subject check out these killer albums from 1989 alone which miss the list because of one song (in brackets)....not necessarily a bad song but not quite up to the quality of the rest -

Shark Island - Law of The Order (The Chain)

Babylon AD - s/t (Sweet Temptation)

Melidian - Lost In The Wild (Broken Toys)

Bonfire - Point Blank (Who's Foolin Who)

Signal - Loud & Clear (This love, this Time)

Silent Rage - Dont Touch Me There (Touch Me)

Treat - Organised Crime (Mr Heartache)

Vain - No Respect (Smoke & Shadows)

the top 10 from every year I consider essential

Ha, my brother from another mother, you are looking for semantics here. Apparently essential is meant for an album that no one could miss it.

Like the other day, a dude told me that if it wasn't for black sabbath, manowar wouldn't exist. Well, screw you dude (insert rant here). The less I care for the sabbs. Actually I'm bored of all these circular/first cause arguments. None is valid and all suck.

He doesn't want only 1 essential album but which albums that you really like the whole song buddy, well for me, every top 10 in every year is important and I'm sure I love every minute of em.

That dude is not entirely wrong, Black Sabbath is a very important and influential band in the heavy metal genre, and that also goes with Led Zeppelin and Blue Cheer. I think these 3 bands are the real roots of every metal genre. And regarding Manowar, well the relation to Sabbath is real close because Joey DeMaio used to work as bass tech for Sabbath before he formed the band :D

Yeah, I didn't say he was wrong. He even named the 3rd album "Hail to England" because of that (of course, we all know Brtitons and their relationship with metal  ). I said that I don't have to love BS, because I love Manowar.

Same goes for maiden. Because they influenced the first major wave of US heavy/power metal, doesn't make it obligatory for every fan of the genre to love them.

Vain - No Respect (Smoke & Shadows)

There's a couple on here i wasn't too familiar with, so had to check them out(Melidian, Shark Island and Silent Rage). Loved them, especially Silent Rage.

Judging by the comments on the main site, their last couple of albums were duds.

Were they really that bad? Shame. What i've heard of their first two albums is killer.

Mr Heartache is a great example of how to take a d.purple riff and make something good out of it- I only don't like the breakdown before the solo.

And of course: Mr Heartache>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Run to the hills.

I've been thinking about this for days. I don't think an album with all killer no filler exists. For there is pretty much always a track i could press the skip button to. Out of all the albums i've heard over the years these are the ones i put on and leave them to play:

1. Age Sten Nilsen's Ammunition – Shanghaied

2. Five Finger Death Punch – The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, Vol. 1

3. Blessed By A Broken Heart – Feel the Power

4. Adrenaline Mob – Omerta

5. Trivium – Ascendancy

6. Bullet For My Valentine – The Poison

7. Avenged Sevenfold – City Of Evil

8. Fightstar – They Like You Better When You Were Dead

9. Killswitch Engage – The End Of Heartache

10. Alter Bridge – One Day Remains

11. Linkin Park – Hybrid Theory

12. The Offspring – Conspiracy of One

13. Pink Floyd – Pulse

14. The Offspring - Smash

15. W.A.S.P. – The Crimson Idol

16. Bon Jovi – Keep the Faith

17. Danger Danger – Screw It!

18. Enuff Z Nuff – Strength

19. Guns N Roses – Use Your illusion I

20. Guns N Roses – Use Your illusion II

21. Shotgun Messiah – Second Coming

22. Skid Row – Slave to the Grind

23. Blue Blud – The Big Noize

24. Danger Danger – Danger Danger

25. Faith No More – The Real Thing

26. Shotgun Messiah – Shotgun Messiah

27. Skid Row – Skid Row

28. Vain – No Respect

29. Bon Jovi – New Jersey

30. Dan Reed Network – Dan Reed Network

31. Guns N Roses – Appetite For Destruction

32. Whitesnake – 1987

33. Bon Jovi – Slippery When Wet

34. Metallica – Master of Puppets

35. Iron Maiden – Live After Death

36. W.A.S.P. - W.A.S.P.

37. Bon Jovi – Bon Jovi

As many fillers as gems on those albums.

And Live After Death is cheating - that's like a greatest hits album ;)

Live After Death and Pulse are two live albums where they've improved on the studio versions of all the tracks i reckon. Love both of them.

I'm probably one of the few who genuinely likes all the Use Your Illusion tracks. Granted they are not all killer but i wouldn't say they have fillers on either.

How does this differ from favourite albums?

It differs because some of my more favoured albums have tracks which are weaker or i skip.

This is about every track being great....but not necessarily perfect
