I agree. But that store does several things in odd ways. One is they used to allow you to trade in 4 used cd's for one new cd. The only thing was, it didn't matter what 4 cd's you were trading in, as long as they scanned into the computer they would give you credit. So what I would do is go to their 50 cent bin, buy a bunch of cd's, turn around and bring in $2.00 worth of cd's for a brand new $16.00 cd!

Now that's what I call beatin' the system! Nice one. I wish Hastings had a store in my area so I could go there and try that trick myself. :P

Another thing they do screwy is they have a ton of cutout or hole-punched brand new/sealed cd's they keep in a discount bin (usually 99 cents to $4.99). But the stupid thing is they put a new barcode sticker over the top of the old barcode that simply says "generic cd". Now the problem with that is they had a TON of great 80's hard rock that was still brand new/sealed but you couldn't look the album up in the computer because it was listed as "generic cd" in the computer, not Blue Tears, Tattoo Rodeo, Dirty Looks, etc. So they probably still have a bunch of cd's that people would be willing to buy in a heartbeat if only they could be found in the database!

That is indeed weird. On the other hand, look at it this way... if those discs aren't in the database, then you don't have any online-shopper competition for'em, they're all sitting in the "generic" bins in their stores waiting for you (and anyone else who's hip enough to know what to look for)!!

When I lived in AZ I had 3 Hastings I used to go to, and all would have such a different selection that I would be like a kid in a candy store every time I'd stop at one. I miss my Hastings trips! I think the closest one to me now is about a 3 hr drive.

The other two discs I ordered arrived in today's mail (in the same envelope no less!)... once again, the CDs are nice clean copies, inserts were mint, I am totally satisfied and will definitely be shopping at their site again in the future.

...hopefully they'll have that f*ckin Motorhead CD I wanted in stock by then.

Been awhile since I browsed GoHastings.com but on a whim I visited today, browsed a while and ended up placing an order for some used/cheap stuff... nothing earth shattering, just a few things I've been lookin' for to plug some outstanding collection holes. (I'm not gonna list what I ordered cuz the last time I did that, one of'em ended up being out of stock so I don't wanna jinx it! Haha)

...hot tip, they take 30% off the price of used CDs if you use the promo code SPRINGBREAK when you order @ their site. I ordered five discs and after using the promo, none of'em cost me more than three bucks. Woohoo! Go cyber-dumpster diving y'all!

The last time I went to their website I ended up spending all afternoon shopping and had over $100 in cd's in my cart. I realized I wasn't going to spend that much so I just closed my web browser without placing an order. That place is so evil in a good way if you want to pick up some cheap used cd's.

Hahaha, I did the same thing over the past couple of days... I had a gigantic order in my cart at first but realized that if I pulled the trigger on it, my wife was gonna pull the trigger on ME (If you catch my drift...) so I kept revising my order and re-revising it till I had a stack of a half dozen or so that came to just about twenty bucks total (including shipping!)...

Got a bunch of e-mails from Hastings today telling me that everything I've ordered has now shipped. Woohoo! I think that's the first time that's ever happened. In the past, usually at least one item winds up being "out of stock"...

You have had better luck than me with condition. Hopefully the ones you receive this time are in as good of condition as your last batch.

Got two of the CDs I ordered in the mail yesterday and they're in fine shape. Hopefully the rest will be as well.

Ordered another bunch from GoHastings this past week and finally got a bunk one - Alice Cooper's HEY STOOPID. I had a feeling I was in for it as soon as I saw how banged up the cover/booklet was, and the disc has a number of scuffs on the playing surface. As I sort of expected, the disc skipped like a motha on its first spin, so I called Hastings' customer service # and asked about getting a replacement copy. The customer service lady sez that her computer didn't show anymore copies in stock (not sure if I believe that, but whatever...) but she cut me a refund for the bum disc and told me I don't even have to send it back. Nice.

...of course, now that the CD is mine free and clear I'm wondering if I can salvage it with one of those CD cleaning/repair kits I see at Walgreens. Might be worth a shot. Haha!!!

Similar thing just happened with me and Hastings. I ordered Nevada Beach - S/T ep and they sent me Nevada Beach - Zero Day instead. So I notified them and they refunded my money and told me to keep the disc.

As for getting the disc cleaned, don't waste your money on the kit, I've never had luck with them. There is a place in town here with a $1500 monster cd cleaning machine that will clean/remove scratches from the disc for $1.50 and the thing looks brand new then they get done with it. They have worked wonders on some nasty cd's I have taken in. Maybe see if there is a place in your area that does that.

So, I've done some searching on gohastings and I've noticed they're not completely clueless. Anything even remotely hard to find is priced high. What I'm gathering is that it's a great site to pick up all your common albums at around $1.49-$2.49, but how bad is shipping? Did I read correctly that, because they're coming from different locations, you pay shipping on each indivdual item?

Yeah, you do pay shipping on each individual item, but if you keep a close eye on their site or on their Facebook page, every so often they'll offer a promotional code for discounts on shipping, or even free shipping. Needless to say, every time they do the 'free shipping' thing their site gets overloaded with orders and by the time you get thru whatever you wanted to snag ends up being out of stock.

Meh, I don't have a game store or video store close by where I could look into that, and I'm not going to drive off on some long quest to find a place to fix a CD that I paid three bucks for. I've had about 50/50 success over the years with those cheapy "CD Repair Kits" that you find at Walgreens' and the like so I may give one of those a shot. What have I got to lose? They already refunded me for this disc so if it still skips after a 'treatment' then I'll just shit can it.

GoHastings.com had a special on shipping this week (96 cents per item, as opposed to the two-bucks-and-change they generally charge per item on CDs) so I placed another order the other night... got e-mails today telling me that three out of the five discs have already shipped. Yay!

There are 3 Hastings in town. Used to be 4 until recent. They have a lot of used cds. Although I dont like being able to open the cds to look at the condition (I am pretty picky). When you turn in used cds they seal them up and put them out on their racks. The pricing in the stores are all messed up to. You can find a new cd marked $4.99 and the used counterpart for $6.99. Go figure.

If you go into a store you could probably see why. Most of the employees are teenage or young adult age.

I have unearthed a quite a few gems from them in the past. They used to not take cds without bar codes or if they didnt come up in their database. Now they do. So its a good place to find a rarity from time to time.

Just ordered a new batch from GoHastings. I recently finished reading the book "Heavier Than Heaven" about Kurt Cobain and Nirvana (go ahead and sneer, I don't give a sh*t) and that gave me a jones to hear some of their stuff again. Unfortunately, aside from Nevermind, I traded off all of my other Nirvana discs in a frenzy of shelf clearing some years ago. So I got me some dirt cheap used copies of their Bleach, Incesticide, and Unplugged in New York discs, all of which I've owned previously (struck out on their In Utero though). I also threw in a cheap used copy of Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger cuz I'd never gotten around to upgrading that one from cassette.

I just picked up The Cult - Sonic Temple cd for $1.99 + 96 cents shipping. :)

Great album! My intro to the Cult and still my fav.

My wife had the cassette when we were dating, I don't know why I never picked up the cd until now. Mistake corrected.

It's Tax Refund time, which means I can blow a few bucks on cheap-ass used CDs @ Hastings' web site. :D Placed an order last night (first time in a while) for 8 CDs, and the whole kit 'n' kaboodle only cost me $22 and change including shipping. Woot!

Hot tip: Used CDs are Buy 1, Get 1 for $1.00 on GoHastings.com right now if you use the promo code "MUTTCUTTS." Of course, not every CD "qualifies" for the offer but I just ordered a batch o' goodies and it knocked the price down on several of them.

The promo code will work till Feb. 22nd so go nuts y'all.

Ya why bother for 200 but thats what it say's so I thought you would want to know. Your in the USA with me so you got a good shot a getting one. I think it may be just 200 LP's vinyl .....
    • I just ordered, Shotgun Mistress – [2021] Shotgun Mistress & Pre-ordered Shotgun Mistress - [2024] Kings Of The Revolution. I just found out about these guys great stuff can't believe I had never heard of ....
    • Man, I really miss places like this! I could spend hours in them just looking at all the stuff. You’re a lucky man to live near there.
    • New album out June 28. Not my style per se, but well executed IMO.

    • I posted about this record store (well, CD store really... it has a fair amount of vinyl, but the focus is CDs) 2 years ago. I go there about once a year, and every single time I do I keep kicking myself to go there more often. Not only for the sheer enjoyment of being able to shop the music genres we love and view all these releases in hand, but because it's so damned overwhelming. There's never time to go through things at leisure, pulling out boxes under racks to rummage, because even flying through things and NOT exploring new artists, it's still 3-4 hours to go through the alphabet... let alone stopping and using their listening station (they'll let you listen to used/opened material, not still sealed merch). It's only an hour and a half drive for me each way, so there's really ZERO excuse for me not going over there more frequently. This time I remembered to take a bunch of pictures, pulling out releases from artists we enjoy just to show what they had in stock... a lot of material you'll never see at any mainstream store (even if there is any that carry CDs anymore). Sure, the prices are more expensive than what you'll pay at Amazon and other online stores, but they're not as bad as you would think, and there are bargains to be had amongst the used material when it comes to OOP discs. And to be fair, being able to view all this stuff in-hand is worth it IMO. (Although every now and then you'll see an OOP disc that is WAAAAAAAY overpriced, but at least they have the odd and unusual.) They have one of those old-school "buyer club" stamp cards, with 20 spaces. One stamp per disc purchased. Every other stamp you get a dollar off, and when you fill a card you get $16.99 off your purchase and then you get a new card. On your birthday, you get $1 off every CD and that's on top of the buyer club card discounts. First the pics from when I was going through the aisles, starting with some general pics. Every single artist has its own title card, so look at the variety and depth of the artists. Also, look at the overstock in boxes underneath all the racks! That's the shit I never have time to go through (except when there's a specific artist I'm focusing in on). You've got CDs in the racks, then ringing the entire room is a shelf of box sets and limited editions, then above that VHS tapes, and above that vintage audio equipment. Sections for DVDs and blu-rays (not just music, but movies as well, including a small section of 4K and 3D titles). There's a smaller upper room level that is nothing but vinyl. If you're going to go, plan at least a full day, not just a quick drive-by. They're open from 11AM - 7PM Eastern Time.     Expensive at $249.99, but how many places have a still-sealed copy of the Vanden Plas Epic Works box set???     And now the stuff I picked up this trip. Most is completist fodder. There are a few artists where I literally want an example of every single pressing, even if I already have other label/year/country versions... call me OCD.               I picked up this one for trade/resale even though I already have it, as it is the LOOOONG out of print original fan club edition.     Hmmm... didn't know there was a solo effort, and it seems to be thematically related to the Threshold album "Legend of the Shires".       More OCD completist fodder. I didn't know that Avalon Records (Japan) licensed releases for South Korea.         Live albums aren't normally my thing, but this appears to be way out of print, and for $10 why not?   A few OOP releases for my multichannel audio collection       I'll be posting more about these once I get my shit together, but I'm WAAAAAAAAAY fucking late to the game when it comes to the Jethro Tull 40th anniversary CD + DVD special editions. They only reason I knew about them at all is that I saw a blurb about the 40th anniversary edition of "Broadsword and the Beast", which is my alltime favorite JT album, the first one I ever heard, and I love the album cover... which led me down the rabbithole of all these anniversary editions and their multichannel mixes. Unfortunately a few of them are now OOP and insanely in the $150-300 range. I ordered all of the ones that were still in print (or that had been reprinted), but there were still 4 that I needed... and they had one of them.   And lastly, the most expensive purchase of the day, going back to previous box set discussions, this was one that wasn't on my radar at the time it came out. Based upon eBay listings, it's now a tough find... and they had one still sealed. No, it's not the Amazon exclusive that was signed by Biff Byford, but autographs aren't important enough for me to spend the $500-$1,000 that the signed version now brings. This one will do nicely at a fraction of the cost... a huge and hefty tome (literally).   So when all was said and done, a great (and expensive!) shopping day, but a place I wholeheartedly recommend visiting should you find yourself out here in flyover country. JL Records 380 Brown St West Lafayette, IN 47906 https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100041894265953
