Avalon - 'Reborn'

Firstly, who are these guys and how many bands with the name Avalon are floating around?

Now, I spun this yesterday and it was actually quite funny. Over the first few songs I was thinking 'Wow, this is pretty good - excellent choruses... but man it sounds a little christian. I wonder if these guys could be christian?' Then by the end of the CD I was thinking, 'For the love of jesus shut the f*ck up you over-bearing freaks!'

 

If you hear this disc you'll see what I mean. It's almost as if the religious tones build up in momentum as the disc moves on... from nothing at the start of the CD to the disturbingly horrific 'Holy' at the end of the CD. Which is lyrically so moronic it's painful. And so is another song (I forget the title) sung in it's entirety about preparing for Jesus' return to earth - seriously, what asylum did these guys escape from? Anyway, so why am I listening? Well, because these songs are damn good! Excellent in many cases. They swap between a lead male and female vocalist and the style is hard to pinpoint as either modern or traditional melodic rock (which is why it's in the christian forum). But basically, if you can handle extremely offensive christian lyrics for the sake of some killer hooks and choruses, you must give this a go. Nice surprise.

Sounds interesting. Your right, how many bands want to call themselves Avalon? Whilst I'm tempted to give this one a listen, I'm not sure I'll bother if the lyrics are that bad.

Honestly, and this is coming from me, I would bother, mate. It's only a few of the last songs where they get really religious, but a lot of the earlier songs aren't as strong in their message and could be interpreted either way. I actually think you'd dig this CD quite a bit. It has a more traditional melodic rock feel to it, but with these huge hook-filled modern rock-type choruses. Yeah, seriously mate, don't let my comments put you off too much. It is very good... I just have a very low tolerance for these freaks as you may know.
