The true meaning of AOR

Oh cheers gener8tr, that's awesome. Will check them all out.

It's weird they didn't make a bigger impression on me live. I remember going to the concert in Birmingham and that I left with a really good feel about the music but hadn't remembered that it was them playing

That's because you didn't see the band with Steve Perry.

Aha! That may very well be the reason

There are tonnes of covers of The Winner Takes It All out there, many 'metal' ones as well.

All good versions, just heavying up the original song. Nothing too innovative or clever about that.

Black Sweeden did a verson as well.

From memory they blended 2 songs together in a fairly decent way. Not sure if they've been discussed here or not.

Wahay, thanks Cure, will check them all out for sure.

Awww, but they are (as you said) just straight covers really - same song but with a different singer. Waaaaahhhhh I wanted to hear a radically different version. Wonder whether it's protected and non-one's been given the permission to dramatically alter it?

Yeah. Harry had the best hair! ;}

than maybe poofy hair is the true meaning of AOR? Poofy Hair Music - PHM heh heh :)

On that note, I was just checking out a clip of Orion the Hunter (So You Ran) on YT. A quinteseential AOR band, and definitely some questionable 80's hair styles going on there too, from a mullet to a perm.

Yeah, I would too, but I doubt I'd like a radically different version.

Some songs are great as they are and screwing with them too much just ruins the attempt.

Nice to hear some beefed up versions though.

I find it interesting that a metal band could have recorded this song (maybe one of the 3 I posted above) and it never went anywhere because it wasn't done by a band who was already huge.

Every now and then I discover hidden gems like this. Songs that are amazing and should have been massive hits bit never got picked up.

I suppose QR's versions of Cum On Feel The Noize and Mama Weer All Crazee Now are pretty good example of this.

I just read an interview with Frankie Benali where he was asked if he met Slade, and he said he met the bass player who was cold, and turned out the whole band were cold about QR getting the accolades, even though whoever wrote the songs got the lion's share of the cash.

And wasn't Quiet Riot cold about doing the covers in the first place?

While I certainly enjoyed me some QR back in 1983 / 1984, I feel confident in my opinion that if it weren't for Cum On Feel The Noise we absolutely would not be discussing Quiet Riot some 35 years later.

We may never have got QRIII

Which I love by the way. Hugely underrated album

*heads off to song of the day*

Heck, there never would have been a Condition Critical. Quiet Riot would simply be remembered as that "Sunset Strip band Randy Rhoads played with before joining Ozzy," and most likely little more than that.

I really was a fan back in the day, too, so I'm not trying to slag on the band or diminish their success... They were just really lucky to find Wonka's Golden Ticket inside that Slade LP :)
