1999 - Best Albums

Recommended Posts

My Top 15 best of 1999 (in alphabetical order)

Anathema - Judgement
Angel Dust - Bleed
Buckcherry - Buckcherry
Burning Rain - Burning Rain
Dream Theater - Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory
Dreamscape - Very
Evergrey - Solitude Dominance Tragedy
The Flower Kings - Flower Power
Fu Manchu - King Of The Road
Sammy Hagar - Red Voodoo
Megadeth - Risk
Royal Hunt - Fear
(Jimi Jamison's) Survivor - Empires
Ten - Spellbound
Vanden Plas - Far Off Grace

Highlights include my favourite Ten album, and in my opinion their last great album before they started to become stale and cheesy (and before Gary Hughes started sounding bored and monotonous). "Risk" was the last Megadeth album that I enjoyed, and also quite a polarising album amongst fans. Fu Manchu released my favourite album of theirs, similarly Royal Hunt with new singer John West.

A couple of great debut albums from Buckcherry and Burning Rain also came out this year, whilst Dream Theater released arguably their most ambitious album, and one of the real highlights of their catalogue. Also noteworthy is Angel Dust's "Bleed", a stunningly heavy yet melodic power metal album, and the first of a pair of masterworks from them.

Hmm. I think I'd go with Conny Bloom. I've probably listened to that album more than the rest. By now, it should be no secret I'm a massive Electric Boys fanboy, so it makes sense. Also love that John Elefante album, though. And Mourning Widows are awesome, too.

Pretty Maids - Anything Worth Doing Is Worth Overdoing

John Elefante - Defying Gravity

Dream Theater - Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory

Mourning Widows - Mourning Widows

Conny Bloom - Psychonaut

Edguy - Theater of Salvation

In Mynd - Veins

I never listened to it. And seeing your list, I forgot to write down Jaded Heart!

Geoff, these are "Best" album lists (i.e. favourites)... Wouldn't it be better to scan through your collection and list the best ones, rather than an incomplete list of everything you've rated? Particularly as the ratings get lower meaning they aren't the best ones.

I figure it helps provide context by indicating preferences in comparison to others, rather than having omissions because you don't own them, but if your list is incomplete because you haven't rated everything (only up to the letter "K"?), then there may be some great stuff missing simply for that reason.

I think Geoff started rating everything from A to Z and he's about to reach K, don't worry about it, there'll come a time where he'll update it again later and each year will consist of at least 150 albums :D

and btw, i'm quite sure for me DREAM THEATER will be in the top 5, and I guess STEELHOUSE LANE is pretty solid too. I think I missed ATTRACTION, so need to check that asap

Yeah, I'll have complete lists one day but I like the contribute when I can, lol. Otherwise the threads would be pretty slim. ;)

And to be honest, on many of the lists I see what I assume are glaring omissions too and I hope that my moderately comprehensive lists, even if incomplete, give some people some cool recommendations, as seems to have already been the case with a couple of these threads already.

I wouldn't mind so much if it wasn't for the fact that people re-quote the entire list when replying to a post, and again sometimes several more times.

Try scrolling down these threads on a mobile phone when you've got the same list of 150 items repeated many times, lol.

I hoped I'd have complete lists by the end of this year, but it won't be for at least another year, I don't think. I have my CD collection split into a "HH style" melodic/glam/hard rock section, and a modern rock collection. Approx 1500 in total... approx. So far I've rated up to K n the melodic rock side, and none of the modern rock ones. Aside, from random discographies I've wanted to here and there, and also a heap of albums I listed on ebay last year.

A-K took from January to July although I've taken the last 2 and a 1/2 weeks off work for my new baby's introduction to the family. I would love to finish my CDs by about mid next year, but I kinda want to include all the worthwhile MP3s too, for those few great albums I couldn't get on CD (or CDR).

But yeah, I'd hope that by the end of next year I have some kind of worthwhile list.

Eh... I can't come to think about any really good album from this year. The year that the rock God forgot about. Pass.

I'm curious to know if you've not heard anything from, for instance, my list? Or the other lists? Good albums to be had if you dig not too deep at all.

Little OT: I see Jaded Heart on best of lists for this year. I'm really enjoying IV and Michael can flat out belt. Are there other albums worth checking out by them? IV their best?

All the ones with Bormann are worth checking out. Their debut is probably (arguably) their second best. But 'The Journey Will Never End' and 'Trust' are great too. The 2nd album and 'Mystery Eyes' are solid. Their first album with the new vocalist was awesome too.
