Stryper has dissapointed me two times (in 30 years... not bad). Having said that, probably, if I think hard about it, I'll find that they have let me down more than that. Well, because they're humans. But I believe these two things would be at the top of any list I could come up with.

First (and, for some reason, I can imagine Michael sighing as he reads this...) is the Revolution Metal Fest affair (oh, but, Mike, if you really do stumble upon this and actually start to read it, please, bear with me for a brief moment and read on).

In short, on November 20 of 2004, exactly ten years ago TODAY, a rock concert, called the Revolution Metal Fest, was held in Mexico City. It was, supposedly, organized by a poor local Underground Church, who somehow managed to hire several foreign top Christian Metal bands for the event. These were: Mortification (Australia), Narnia (Sweden) and Saviour Machine (USA); as well as the show's main attraction: Stryper (USA). The festival took place as scheduled, but, sadly, without Stryper, because, a couple of days earlier, they had cancelled their appearance, claiming a Breach of Contract. This developed into an enormous scandal for Stryper, because they refused to return the sum of US$ 56,500.00 that they had already received in advance. This was from a total amount they would have charged of US$ 100,000.00, which some considered excesive, but I'll get back to that in a while.

Apparently, all hardcore Stryper fans knew about this, except me! I didn't learn about this until sometime after they launched Murder by Pride. When I did, I'm pretty sure I found and analyzed every little bit of information available online concerning the subject. I read and, even, heard (on YouTube) all arguments against and in favor of both sides of this mess (and beyond). I have to admit, for a period of time, I was left feeling very dissapointed by Stryper's behaviour, not even wanting to listen to their music anymore. It got to a point, around a couple of years ago, where I didn't even want to listen to any Christian rock music whatsoever. I felt (for this and other reasons, to be honest) like it was all just a business, disguised as something else.

However, at times, I would remember the deep moments of genuine Divine Grace I had experienced through certain Christian band's music; SPECIALLY STRYPER's! Not being able to deny that important fact, one day (not long ago), I decided to look into this matter again. So, I re-read some of the material, mostly many explanations Stryper had issued back then. And, I'm so happy I did, because, this time, for some reason, I managed to comprehend their position. In my opinion, an important part of getting it is understanding where Stryper was coming from at that moment in time. After many years of inactivity, Stryper was trying to reunite and reorganize their operations... It's not the same to cold start a car that's being used daily, as a car that's used now and then or one that's been sitting for years. Specially if it's a high performance car and you need and want it running 100%.

To close this subject (in my mind, at least... Stryper closed it ten years ago), I'll say this: Stryper had valid reasons for charging 100k. The organizer/s accepted the non refundable fee, as well as the terms and conditions. Any organization (profit or non profit, business or church) and/or person (Pastor, restaurant owner or whatever) who has the capacity to collect the amount of money that was required to carry out this activity in the short period of time it is said it took to do that, no matter how anyone wants to put it, is not poor. There is a side of a profesional Christian Rock band that has to be run like a business, simply because that's what it is! Finally, Stryper's cancellation cost THEM US$ 43,500!!! Now, think about that for a moment. Stryper had valid reasons to act as they did. Accept it, beleive it. Or just don't... Personally, I decided to give them a vote of confidence. And this happened recently. I hadn't, even, listened to their last album. Wow, what was I missing!

Maybe, I'll always wonder if they could have done something more to help the situation and clean their name. But the truth is we just don't know what they did (or are still doing), because they said they would deal with it in private. We don't know how many "Live in Mexico" T-Shirts they've sold and how much they've managed to send back... Plus, I guess the only person's opinion they should REALLY care about is God's.

The other dissapointment is the (much more recent) covering of "Over the Mountain", which they recorded for their "The Covering" album.

Decades ago, when I was young (I'm 47 now) and couldn't care less about Jesus and the Gospel, I was a huge Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne fan. And, even back then, I recall trying to figure out what the heck the lyrics of that song meant and I remember concluding that: <<Very probably, it's about being high on drugs, but, SURELY, it's about nothing good>>. The truth is I hated that song back then and, more so, I hate it now!

Now, I simply can't ignore things like the upside down cross on the front cover art of "Diary of a Madman". The whole <<it's just a show>> justification, constantly repeated by his Christian defenders, like Rudy Sarzo, is just not acceptable TO ME, I'm sorry. - Besides, if I accept that, then, I would have to accept what Stryper critics say about their Christianity being a show too. - Undeniably, the whole "Prince of Darkness" image or "show" (yeah, right) has helped who knows how many souls to stray away from Christ's Salvation.

I mean, if Stryper really wanted an Ozzy Osbourne/Randy Rhoads song, because they just had to show where their musical influences came from and all that (I get it, Oz!), what about those Ozzy songs with positive lyrics? They exist. Even "Crazy Train" kind of falls in to that category. I, very seriously, hope they don't cover "Flying High Again" or another one of those wierd (to say the least) songs, if they do decide on recording The Covering II.

So, today, to prove my "Sympathy" (pun intended) towards Stryper, I went on their web site and ordered the "Live in Mexico" shirt (I understand the revenue is, still, for the above mentioned Mexican Church). I, even, purchased "The Covering" CD (revenue for Stryper!), since I already have all the others :)

PS: How about doing the same and ordering this T-Shirt? It's for a good cause and it's on sale for only 10 bucks! Plus, who knows, it could become a collector's item down the road, since I understand Stryper has NEVER been "Live in Mexico" and, maybe, never will. Incredible.

Um... welcome?

Yes and thanks! Oh and forgive me for not introducing myself before posting anything else. So, anyway, as previously mentioned, I'm 47 years old and a hardcore Stryper fan. I, also, like Creed, Flyleaf, POD and Tourniquet. Yes, I try to avoid listening to secular music, but that's a long (and boring, I guess) story. Hmmm, what else can I say? Well, I live in Panama, but want to move to Houston... :)

So why did the thieving christians cancel that show? ;)

And why were you so much more intelligent decades ago, when you were young? I kid... or do I. But I do... or do I?

Anyway, why don't you listen to secular music? Is it because it actually makes sense? ;)

They cancelled, because the organizers didn't send them the necessary documents (working visas, etc.) in time. Actually, there's a lot more to it, but that was the legal cause.

Why was I more intelligent decades ago? Hmmm, maybe, because I had more brain cells ;)

I have to clarify, I do listen to (selected) secular music, but you could say it's not my main focus.

Hey, if everything made the same sense to everyone, the world wouldn't be as interesting...

Blessed By A Broken Heart a christian band? Is that 4real?

I believe some of the members are. They used to play some of the Christian music festivals. But I hate the term "Christian Band," because, well... that's a long conversation. But the short answer is "Christian" is not a genre; it's not a style of music.

Well I just thank Jesus they don't sing about Jesus, but instead about more intelligent and worthwhile matters like skateboarding.

Yeah, I dig some of those, thanks. Hmmm, I like heavy, but wouldn't say the heavier the better. Depends on the mood.

    • I posted about this record store (well, CD store really... it has a fair amount of vinyl, but the focus is CDs) 2 years ago. I go there about once a year, and every single time I do I keep kicking myself to go there more often. Not only for the sheer enjoyment of being able to shop the music genres we love and view all these releases in hand, but because it's so damned overwhelming. There's never time to go through things at leisure, pulling out boxes under racks to rummage, because even flying through things and NOT exploring new artists, it's still 3-4 hours to go through the alphabet... let alone stopping and using their listening station (they'll let you listen to used/opened material, not still sealed merch). It's only an hour and a half drive for me each way, so there's really ZERO excuse for me not going over there more frequently. This time I remembered to take a bunch of pictures, pulling out releases from artists we enjoy just to show what they had in stock... a lot of material you'll never see at any mainstream store (even if there is any that carry CDs anymore). Sure, the prices are more expensive than what you'll pay at Amazon and other online stores, but they're not as bad as you would think, and there are bargains to be had amongst the used material when it comes to OOP discs. And to be fair, being able to view all this stuff in-hand is worth it IMO. (Although every now and then you'll see an OOP disc that is WAAAAAAAY overpriced, but at least they have the odd and unusual.) They have one of those old-school "buyer club" stamp cards, with 20 spaces. One stamp per disc purchased. Every other stamp you get a dollar off, and when you fill a card you get $16.99 off your purchase and then you get a new card. On your birthday, you get $1 off every CD and that's on top of the buyer club card discounts. First the pics from when I was going through the aisles, starting with some general pics. Every single artist has its own title card, so look at the variety and depth of the artists. Also, look at the overstock in boxes underneath all the racks! That's the shit I never have time to go through (except when there's a specific artist I'm focusing in on). You've got CDs in the racks, then ringing the entire room is a shelf of box sets and limited editions, then above that VHS tapes, and above that vintage audio equipment. Sections for DVDs and blu-rays (not just music, but movies as well, including a small section of 4K and 3D titles). There's a smaller upper room level that is nothing but vinyl. If you're going to go, plan at least a full day, not just a quick drive-by. They're open from 11AM - 7PM Eastern Time.     Expensive at $249.99, but how many places have a still-sealed copy of the Vanden Plas Epic Works box set???     And now the stuff I picked up this trip. Most is completist fodder. There are a few artists where I literally want an example of every single pressing, even if I already have other label/year/country versions... call me OCD.               I picked up this one for trade/resale even though I already have it, as it is the LOOOONG out of print original fan club edition.     Hmmm... didn't know there was a solo effort, and it seems to be thematically related to the Threshold album "Legend of the Shires".       More OCD completist fodder. I didn't know that Avalon Records (Japan) licensed releases for South Korea.         Live albums aren't normally my thing, but this appears to be way out of print, and for $10 why not?   A few OOP releases for my multichannel audio collection       I'll be posting more about these once I get my shit together, but I'm WAAAAAAAAAY fucking late to the game when it comes to the Jethro Tull 40th anniversary CD + DVD special editions. They only reason I knew about them at all is that I saw a blurb about the 40th anniversary edition of "Broadsword and the Beast", which is my alltime favorite JT album, the first one I ever heard, and I love the album cover... which led me down the rabbithole of all these anniversary editions and their multichannel mixes. Unfortunately a few of them are now OOP and insanely in the $150-300 range. I ordered all of the ones that were still in print (or that had been reprinted), but there were still 4 that I needed... and they had one of them.   And lastly, the most expensive purchase of the day, going back to previous box set discussions, this was one that wasn't on my radar at the time it came out. Based upon eBay listings, it's now a tough find... and they had one still sealed. No, it's not the Amazon exclusive that was signed by Biff Byford, but autographs aren't important enough for me to spend the $500-$1,000 that the signed version now brings. This one will do nicely at a fraction of the cost... a huge and hefty tome (literally).   So when all was said and done, a great (and expensive!) shopping day, but a place I wholeheartedly recommend visiting should you find yourself out here in flyover country.
